I still think about the trip I took this summer to Canada and drove the icefield Parkway. This is a top three memorable trip. This still doesn’t come close to when I traveled to Alaska with my grandmother in 1996 but I do have her to thank for all the traveling that I’ve done because she gave me the bug.

Sunday Stories

In the heart of a sprawling national forest near Walton Peak,I embarked on an extraordinary journey in my converted skoolie. I had just upgraded the tires to some aggressive, mud terrain tread and was itching to get them on the forest back roads.

The area around Walton Peak was a world of rugged beauty, where nature's magnificence could be appreciated in its purest form. The dirt roads winding through the forest provided the perfect canvas for adventure. I ventured deep into the heart of the wilderness, leaving behind the conveniences of modern life. The skoolie's tires kicked up a trail of dust as I drove deeper into the woods.

As evening descended and the forest became cloaked in a serene twilight, the skoolie was parked at a secluded spot. With its whispering pines and starlit canopy, the forest welcomed me for a night of dispersed camping.

Crikey! Have a gander at this remarkable sight deep in the wild back roads of northern Michigan – an elusive converted school bus, known as a "skoolie"! These magnificent beasts have undergone a remarkable transformation from humble transportation to cozy, rolling homes. It just goes to show, nature's adaptability knows no bounds, even in the world of converted vehicles!

Icefields Parkway

Embarking on the Icefields Parkway in my skoolie was a breathtaking adventure! Alberta's natural beauty was unmatched as I traveled through this majestic highway. Glacial landscapes and towering peaks surrounded the drive, while turquoise lakes mesmerized at every turn. The skoolies large windows provided perfect views. Camped amidst untamed wilderness, waking up to stunning sunrise views. The Icefields Parkway is an unforgettable journey that reconnects us with nature's grandeur. An experience of a lifetime! 🚌🏔️✨

Spent a couple days in glacier national Park and well a lot of the higher elevation hikes were closed. I did get to do most of Grinnell glacier hike. It was closed in about 3/4 of the way up but still the views were immaculate and the weather was changing every five minutes and it was 100% worth it. The bus has been running good and now I’m in Banff Canada, hoping the weather gets a little nicer so I can drive down the Icefields Parkway and get the footage. I always dreamed of anyways love in the Skoolie life and will be updating a lot. I’ve taken so many photos and videos. I don’t even know what to do with them.

360 degree view of Copper Harbor from the comfort of my home, yes please.

Drove the skoolie up the scenic driveway and, oh man, the views didn’t disappoint. I was up there for a few hours just taking in the landscape after a great day of mountain biking.

one of my favorite parts of my build. My bed might be a little high but that's only so I can put my mountain bikes underneath in the garage.

It’s all in the details

This photo was taken right before the epoxy pour of the kitchen countertop, I do quite like the look of the matte finish. I will probably incorporate an oil finish in the next build but for now, I made it shiny.

Spending time in the snow isn’t so bad actually I prefer it when I don’t have to drive. The reason for this is this is sense of calming, Snow being an insulator creates a sense of peace and quiet around and I quite enjoy that. I just have to make sure there’s enough diesel in my heater tank and I’m set to enjoy the storm.

Weekend work
Spent the better part of the weekend cutting staining and assembling the kitchen drawers. While I have diverted from the original design based on the material that I’m using I have decided instead of painting the wood for a more finished and refined design. I’ve decided that after routing out all the cabinet faces I wanted to accentuate the wood grain in the material itself. This led me to choosing a darker stain in line with the original design but instead of staining the whole cabinet face I left the center the raw wood because I like how it fits in with the walnut slab on the top the colors match pretty well.

For the fabrication process I made a jig out of a 2 x 4 MDF sheet and flip milled many of the parts as the whole cabinet has no hardware to hold it together it’s just glue and joinery. I also spent a lot of time looking at different types of stains and decided on the darkest one I could and I’ve had to prep the plywood so I wouldn’t get a blotchy finish so it’s kind of a two-step process to get everything working as well as sanding because the pieces didn’t fit all completely right so there was a little bit post processing involved.

Overall I’m super happy how the design turned out and I’m looking forward to finishing up the cabinet doors because I messed up one of the pieces had some sort of anomaly happened on the CNC router when I was doing the last piece so I have to re-cut that but super happy with outcome.

Let me know what you think.
