Vital Transformations
July will see a revitalised CBD with plans for three art exhibitions and a hui. Several of the world’s leading art-science practitioners will present at the hui, alongside Parihaka kaumatua Maata Wharehoka. As well as exhibitions and four music performances, the central part of Devon Street will be used as a canvas for creativity.
Locals can expect bright pink banners flying from lampposts and a number of empty shops will have vinyl art works in their windows.
The project is an opportunity to reflect on the CBD and what it might be like going forward. There is a unique opportunity to think about the CBD in terms of art and culture, cafes and shops, rather than simply retail.
New Plymouth has several strengths, including it’s creative and cultural sector. There are many artists here producing high quality work and a number of them have been selected for three exhibitions.
Unrealism will take place in the currently unused shop on the corner of Devon and Liardet streets. It features work by seven artists all living and working locally, whose work touches on the idea that reality is a window into other realms.
At Koru on Devon Gallery, the exhibition Vital Transformations (also the name of the overall project) includes works by another seven artists who all have a strong connection to the environment. This connection is sometimes intuitive, and at other times involves materials used such as harakeke. Re-using and upcycling materials is also a theme to some of the works.
The third exhibition Art-science+environment includes a diverse range of works. A theme of wai or water runs through the exhibition, which consists of work by tangata whenua and artists who explore nature and the environment. The exhibition is at JD Reid Gallery, and includes some art works that directly explore climate change and global warming, and are based on scientific knowledge.
