In a press release issued by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), roughly $1.1 billion in humanitarian aid can not be accounted for since the United States withdrawal in August of 2021.
Inspector General John F. Sopko stated, "SIGAR, for the first time in its history, is unable this quarter to provide Congress and the American people with a full accounting of this U.S. government spending due to the non-cooperation of several U.S. government agencies." Sopko also mentioned that the Treasury Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) "refused to cooperate with SIGAR in any capacity." The mentioned government agencies refuted Sopko's statement. A spokeswoman for USAID stated that the agency had already provided the SIGAR's office with hundreds of pages of documents. Additionally, a spokesman for the Treasury Department said, "the Treasury has complied with all legal requirements and shared information with SIGAR."
