LIONEL MESSI wins nine-year fight to trademark his surname

Footballer Lionel Messi can register his name as a trademark after a nine-year legal battle, the EU's top court has ruled.

The European Court of Justice dismissed an appeal from Spanish cycling company Massi and the EU's intellectual property office, EUIPO.

The Barcelona footballer first applied to trademark his surname as a sportswear brand in 2011.

But Massi argued the similarity between their logos would cause confusion.

Liverpool FC fails in bid to trademark city's name
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) said that the star player's reputation could be taken into account when weighing up whether the public would be able to tell the difference between the two brands.

In doing so, it upheld a ruling by the EU's General Court in 2018 that the footballer was too well known for confusion to arise.

Massi, which sells cycle clothing and equipment, was successful in its initial challenge to the Barcelona striker's application. But it lost out when Lionel Messi brought an appeal to the General Court, which ruled in his favour.

Messi, 33, who wears the number 10 shirt, has been crowned world football player of the year a record six times and is the world's highest-paid soccer player, according to Forbes. It puts his total earnings for 2020 at $126m (£97m).

In August, he made headlines by sending a fax to his club declaring his intention to leave.

But when Barcelona responded by insisting that any team that took him on would have to honour a €700m (£624m) release clause, he changed his mind, saying he did not want to face "the club I love" in court.

Messi transfer rumour
🔴Update
Neymar has asked PSG to move for want-away Barcelona star Lionel Messi, Sky Sports reports. Messi shocked the footballing world earlier this week when he requested a move away from Barca. PSG have been mentioned as one of the few teams that could afford the Argentine superstar, and former Barca star Neymar is hoping to be reunited with his ex-team-mate.
On the other side, Manchester City are ready to offer three players to Barcelona in exchange for Lionel Messi, according to Sport. It is claimed Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva and Eric Garcia will be offered to the Catalans. Barca have been linked with all three players in the past, and had reportedly made an offer for Garcia this month.
In the course of the day, Messi's father released a disclaimer that a certain viral audio attributed to Messi is false. The audio emits a voice telling City striker Kun Aguero that he will be looking forward to leave Barca and join City. According to Messi's father, his son's voice was mimicked.
Journalist Marcelo Bechler, renowned for his reliability, equally made an outing stating the only reason Messi may stay at Barca is that his family has settled in Spain and would find inconveniences moving to settle England.
Ever since Messi handed in his formal transfer request in the evening of August 25th, more stories have come out regarding the ramifications of Messi leaving Barcelona. With Messi still having one year left on his current deal, the Catalans are holding out for his £631 million release clause to be activated by a team who wants him.
However, the Argentine is trying to get around this and have his contract terminated by FIFA. Nick De Marco QC, who has represented sport's governing bodies, players, clubs and agents since 2002, says world football's governing body is likely to be asked to settle any dispute in the first instance.
That's what you could bring together for you, today. Stay tune for more updates on this.

North West: Unite For Health Shortcircuits COVID-19 With Telemedicine
With the present global pandemic that is jeopardizing the public from accessing quality healthcare service, Unite For Health Foundation has short-circuited the COVID 19 by introducing Tele-medicine.
With the program launched recently at their centre in Bamenda, chief town of the North West region, patients don't have to risk going to the hospital but to just make use of their hotline for consultation and prescription of their required medication.
The country manager of Unite for Health, Biyeh Edwin, told The Voice, that in a developing African country like Cameroon, public healthcare has always been dangerously inadequate. People in many communities and everyone outside major cities have virtually no access to doctors. This results in undiagnosed and untreated medical conditions, as well as disturbingly high rates of maternal and infant mortality. With the arrival of the highly infectious COVID-19 virus, the situation has already become dire in startling ways.
"....Our response is to vastly expand our telemedicine outreach program so that people can consult with a doctor without fear. People visit the micro-clinic for some tests and treatments, prenatal care and child vaccinations...."
According to him, the person or child with a fever can be diagnosed for malaria on FaceTime and get treatment. Many other routine health conditions can be monitored and taken care of. People suspected of having the coronavirus can be directed to the nearest testing facility. The launch of a telemedicine program in Bamenda is to help patients who are scared to go to hospital to be able to call and consult with a doctor free of charge.
"....We are also helping IDP pregnant women give birth free of charge in our clinics.........We follow them up from ANC to delivery for free and we shall help 100 women. We have already helped deliver 20 babies in this program since January...." He said
Opening Hours Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm, even WhatsApp calls are accepted.
Since 2007, Unite for health has provided healthcare services to over 20,000 Cameroonians in its three micro-clinics.
Unite for Health is found in Bonamousadi -Yaounde and Eloumden-Mbankomo.

Coronavirus: Satellite traffic images may suggest virus hit Wuhan earlier

An apparent surge in traffic outside Wuhan hospitals from August 2019 may suggest the coronavirus hit the area earlier than reported, a study says.
Harvard researchers say satellite images show an increase in traffic outside five hospitals in the city from late August to December.
The traffic spike coincided with a rise in online searches for information on symptoms like "cough" and "diarrhoea".
China said the study was "ridiculous" and based on "superficial" information.
It is believed that the virus first appeared in China some time in November. Authorities reported a cluster of pneumonia cases with an unknown cause to the World Health Organization (WHO) on 31 December 2019.

"Clearly, there was some level of social disruption taking place well before what was previously identified as the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic", Dr John Brownstein, who led the research, told ABC news.
The study has not been peer-reviewed.
What did the study show?
The researchers examined commercial satellite data from outside five Wuhan hospitals, comparing data from late summer and autumn 2018 to the same time period in 2019.
In one case, researchers counted 171 cars parked at one of Wuhan's largest hospitals, Tianyou Hospital in October 2018.
Satellite data from the same time in 2019 showed 285 vehicles in the same place, an increase of 67%.
A surge in online searches for words associated with the symptoms of coronavirus on the Chinese search engine Baidu seemed to emerge at the same time.
"This is all about a growing body of information pointing to something taking place in Wuhan at the time," Dr Brownstein told ABC.

"Many studies are still needed to fully uncover what took place and for people to really learn about how these disease outbreaks unfold and emerge in populations. So this is just another point of evidence."
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying dismissed the findings at a press briefing on Tuesday.
"I think it is ridiculous, incredibly ridiculous, to come up with this conclusion based on superficial observations such as traffic volume," she said.
What are the implications of the study?
The BBC's John Sudworth in Beijing says there were limits on the data set used by researchers - for example, they could not always compare satellite images taken on the same day in consecutive years due to cloud cover in some of the photos.
But if the infection was present - undetected perhaps - some people could have been leaving Wuhan and travelling abroad and that fits with some of the other evidence we have begun to see in other parts of the world suggesting early cases of Covid-19, our correspondent says.
However it may be unfair to use the study as evidence of a cover-up or delay in China's response, because with a previously unknown illness taking root in a community it is quite possible that there was some undetected spread before it was noticed officially, our correspondent adds.

China reported pneumonia cases with an unidentified cause to WHO on 31 December 2019.
Nine days later, Chinese authorities revealed they had detected a novel coronavirus (later named Sars-CoV-2, the virus causing Covid-19) in several of the pneumonia cases.
Wuhan and other Chinese cities went into lockdown on 23 January 2020.
The WHO declared Covid-19 a Public Health Emergency of Global Concern on 30 January 2020 - this followed 82 confirmed cases outside China.

Erdogan says 'agreements' reached with Trump over Libya

Turkish president says there could be a 'new era' in the Libyan conflict following a phone call with his US counterpart.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said "some agreements" have been reached with his US counterpart Donald Trump that could herald a "new era" in the conflict in Libya.
Turkey supports the internationally recognised government of Fayez al-Sarraj, whose forces have in recent weeks driven back an assault on the capital, Tripoli, by the forces of renegade commander Khalifa Haftar.

While the US officially supports Libya's UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), Haftar is supported by Washington's allies - Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia - as well as France and Russia.
"After our call this evening, there could be a new era between the US and Turkey regarding the (Libya) process," Erdogan told state broadcaster TRT on Monday.
"We reached some agreements during our call", he said, and alluded to a "possible step" the two countries could take together, but offered no details.
A White House statement said Trump and Erdogan discussed the war in the north African country, as well as Syria and the wider eastern Mediterranean region, but gave no details.
Turkey's support for the GNA has helped shift the balance in the country, helping the Tripoli-based forces score a string of military victories in the country's west and around Tripoli, inflicting a heavy blow to Haftar's year-long campaign to capture the capital.
Last week, GNA forces also recaptured Tripoli's airport, gaining the upper hand against Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA) based in the country's east - the seat of the rival administration.
On Monday, the GNA's forces launched offensive to seize the strategic city of Sirte, as it rejected a unilateral ceasefire proposed over the weekend by Egypt, a Haftar ally.
OILFIELD TARGETED
Egypt had called for a ceasefire starting Monday, as part of an initiative which also proposed an elected leadership council for Libya. Haftar's other supporters, Russia and the UAE, welcomed the proposal.
But Erdogan, whose support for the GNA's forces helped change the course of the war, said the GNA would continue fighting to seize the coastal city of Sirte and the Jufra airbase further south in a strategic region of the oil-exporting country.
"Now the goal is to take over the whole Sirte area and get it done. These are areas with the oil wells, these are of great importance," the Turkish president said.
Libya's GNA launches offensive to seize strategic city of Sirte
Erdogan said he would also discuss Moscow's role in Libya with President Vladimir Putin, including what he said was the supply of Russian planes and Pantsir air defences to Haftar's forces.
"They have Pantsirs there, they sent 19 warplanes to Libya," Erdogan said. "After talking with him, we can plan ahead."
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) said an "armed force" had entered the Sharara oilfield and told employees to shut the oilfield, hours after maintenance operations started.
The NOC added in a statement that it had told employees not to obey the order regarding field operations.
The statement did not specify which group the "armed force" belonged to.
The Hamada pipeline running from Libya's Sharara oilfield has been reopened, the Petroleum Facilities Guards said in a short statement on Friday, after it was closed during a blockade on oil exports.

Vatican Archbishop to Trump: 'Children of Darkness' Oppose You

Influential Vatican Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the former Papal Nuncio to Washington, D.C., has written to President Trump, praising his leadership during a critical juncture in his presidency as he faces harsh criticism for his handling of the coronavirus and the George Floyd protests.
In a June 7 letter addressed to President Trump and obtained by Newsmax, Viganò writes that the President’s enemy is “the children of darkness – whom we may easily identify with the deep state which you wisely oppose and which is fiercely waging war against you in these days . . .”
The Archbishop indicated that the “Covid emergency” will likely be viewed in the future as a “colossal operation of social engineering.”
“We will also discover that the riots in these days were provoked by those who, seeing that the virus is inevitably fading and that the social alarm of the pandemic is waning, necessarily have had to provoke civil disturbances, because they would be followed by repression which, although legitimate, could be condemned as an unjustified aggression against the population,” Viganò wrote.
The Archbishop claimed that “the same thing is also happening in Europe, in perfect synchrony.”
Viganò praised Trump as a “President who courageously defends the right to life, who is not ashamed to denounce the persecution of Christians throughout the world, who speaks of Jesus Christ and the right of citizens to freedom of worship.”
President Trump came under fierce criticism last Tuesday after visiting the Catholic National Shrine of Saint John Paul II in Washington.
Washington Archbishop Wilton Gregory, a church liberal, publicly chastised the Shrine for hosting the President.
In a statement Gregory stated: “I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people even those with whom we might disagree.”
The President’s visit to the Shrine came shortly after he signed an Executive Order at the White House supporting religious freedom around the world. The day before the President had visited St. John Church and held a Bible up in front of a press gaggle. On Sunday night, protesters attempted to burn the historic church down.
In his letter Viganò told Trump that the attacks were “part of the orchestrated media narrative which seeks not to fight racism and bring social order, but to aggravate dispositions; not to bring justice, but to legitimize violence and crime; not to serve the truth, but to favor one political faction.”
Without referencing Gregory by name, Viganò implied he was “aligned on the opposing side” to the President.
“They are subservient to the deep state, to globalism, to aligned thought, to the New World Order which they invoke ever more frequently in the name of a universal brotherhood which has nothing Christian about it, but which evokes the Masonic ideals of those want to dominate the world by driving God out of the courts, out of schools, out of families, and perhaps even out of churches,” Viganò said.
Viganò concluded his letter, “United against the Invisible Enemy of all humanity, I bless you and the First Lady, the beloved American nation, and all men and women of good will.”
