The day after Pearl Harbor, and following evacuation orders for Japanese living in America, the owner of this shop in Oakland, California, who was a University of California graduate of Japanese descent, but this notice across his shop front on Dec. 8, 1941.
This photo was taken by Dorothea Lange who left a comfortable life in San Francisco to work for the FSA and document the migrant experience. She was motivated to make work that would inspire change in the country, and her work did often spark federal aid for those in need.
