La Liga: Neymar Agrees 2-year Deal With Barcelona On Personal Terms

Brazilian international Neymar has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract worth €13 million per year, with Barcelona also reserving the option of an additional year.

According to Jose Alvarez on El Chiringuito TV, Neymar has inched closer to joining Barcelona in the ongoing transfer window. The two parties have sealed an agreement on a two-year contract worth €13 million per season.

But the summer move hinges on the Brazilian international getting Paris Saint-Germain to terminate his deal.

Neymar has been an enigmatic performer for much of his professional career thus far. While he has shown the ability to be the undisputed best player in the world, temperamental issues and fitness woes have got the better of him. That latter was not a problem during his spell with Barcelona but has surfaced after joining Paris Saint-Germain.

The 31-year-old moved to Parc des Princes in a world-record deal worth €222 million. But while the Brazilian international has been a prolific performer for PSG, he has not justified the enormous outlay. Nonetheless, Neymar’s performance levels remain high, as was evident when he contributed to 35 goals in only 29 games last season.

The experienced attacker found the back of the net 18 times while providing 17 assists. But the Brazilian forward does not feature in Luis Enrique’s plans, with PSG keen on selling him as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Neymar’s situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of his former club, Barcelona.

A deal for the 31-year-old initially seemed like a pipedream, as Xavi Hernandez was reluctant to sanction a move. But Joan Laporta’s insistence of securing Neymar’s services has eventually turned the manager’s head. And recent reports have claimed that Barcelona will launch the offensive to re-sign him.

A summer transfer now seems close, with Neymar agreeing to a two-year contract with Barcelona. But he will seemingly take a pay cut as he will be on €13 million-a-year wages. However, the deal is not set in stone, with Barcelona waiting for the Brazilian to have his PSG contract terminated.

In addition, the Catalan giants need to offload a few players before bringing their top target back to the club. Meanwhile, Barcelona will reserve the option to extend Neymar’s career by a year in 2025. But it will be interesting to see if a reunion sees the light of day.

Requests to remove Tinubu are coming in, according to the Nigerian military.

The Nigeria Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed receiving requests from unnamed persons to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration amid the ongoing political standoff in Niger Republic where the military recently removed the country’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum….

The DHQ suggests that proponents of the coup d’état are basing the calls on alleged poor welfare within the Armed Forces.

The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, confirmed this in a statement released via the DHQ’s official Twitter account .

The military frowned on the call for military intervention in the nation’s democracy, labeling such as ‘unpatriotic’ and ‘wicked’, and an attempt to divert the focus of the Armed Forces from their constitutional duties.

While acknowledging the significance of ensuring the welfare of its personnel, the leadership of the DHQ said it remains resolute in safeguarding the principles of democracy in Nigeria.

“…we detest any attempt by any individual or group to instigate the law abiding Armed Forces of Nigeria to embark on any unconstitutional change of government in our country. We wish to state unequivocally that the military is happy and better under democracy and Will not get involved in any act to sabotage the hard-earned democracy in our country.

“The AFN under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa is determined to ensure complete subordination of the Armed Forces to constitutional authority under His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and will not be distracted from its roles that are well defined in the 1999 constitution (as amended),” said Gusau.

On July 26, 2023, a group of soldiers led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani overthrew the government of President Mohamed Bazoum in a military coup.

Tchiani subsequently declared himself the head of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, while placing his former boss and country’s democratically elected president under house arrest.

Gen Tchiani has so far refused to compromise with any of the suggestions made to him, including appeals by the Tinubu-led ECOWAS to restore democratic rule in the country.

Presidency sources said Mr El-Rufai told President Tinubu at a meeting on Tuesday that he was no longer interested in becoming a minister but would continue to contribute his quota to the development of Nigeria as a private citizen.

BREAKING: President Tinubu’s new appointee resigns, gives reasons

Taiwo Oyedele, recently appointed as the chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, has resigned as a fiscal policy partner and Africa tax leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

In a tweet on Wednesday, Oyedele, recently appointed by President Bola Tinubu, announced the resignation from his position at the organisation on his Twitter page on Wednesday, July 19.

The tax expert explained that his resignation was due to the fact that he needed to concentrate on the new role that President Tinubu had handed over to him.

In early July, President Tinubu approved that a Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms should be established and subsequently appointed Oyedele to chair the committee.

According to the presidency, the establishment of the committee is a reflection of Tinubu’s commitment to address the challenges confronting the country and bring about transformational reforms in the country’s fiscal policy and taxation.

The primary objective of the committee, as the presidency has said, was to enhance the collection of revenue, ensure transparency in reporting as well as the promotion of the effective utilisation of tax and more revenue of boost the morale of the citizens, enhance heavy tax structure and encourage compliance voluntarily.

Oyedele’s statement reads in part: “This is to enable me to focus fully with undivided attention on my new role as the Chair of the Presidential Fiscal Policy & Tax Reform Committee, which I consider an important national assignment.”

North Korea Arrests US Soldier After Crossing Military Border Without Permission

North Korea has reportedly arrested a United State soldier who crossed the border from the inter-Korean demilitarised zone without authorisation.

United Nations Command in a tweet on Tuesday said that they now believe that the US national is in the custody of North Korean officials, Daily Mail reports.

The yet-to-be-identified US soldier was taking part in a tour of the Joint Security Area, the border village in the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas where soldiers from both sides stand guard.

UN Command tweeted, "A US National on a JSA orientation tour crossed, without authorisation, the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"We believe he is currently in DPRK custody and is working with our KPA counterparts to resolve this incident,' it added, referring to North Korea's People's Army."

Since July 1953 when the Armistice was signed, the Military Demarcation Line marks the border between North and South Korea.

The Korean Demilitarised Zone sits on either side of the border, stretching 2km each way.

I Only Moved The Car From Abuja To Delta State — Man Who Absconded With N55m Benz During Test Drive Denies Being A Car Th!ef

He said: “I’m from Ughelli in Delta State, but I live in Abuja. I’m into foreign exchange and bureau de change business. I have been doing this for seven years. I started along that line when I was in secondary school. My business is at Istanbul Airport, Turkey, so I used to shuttle between there and Nigeria. I started it there in 2021. I returned from Instabul in May after the general elections”

On how he got into police custody, he said: “I was arrested on July 6 for car theft after I was tracked by the police. Actually, I moved the car from Abuja to Delta State.

"I didn’t steal the car, but it was not mine. What happened was that I got the owner’s contact from an online platform (name withheld). He posted the car’s picture on the platform, putting it up for sale. When I called him to indicate an interest, he told me to come for the car inspection. He was also Abuja-based and the location he invited me to was at Garki.

"I saw the car, and the intending seller put the price at N58 million. I offered to pay N30 million and he said I should test-drive it so that I would know the value of what I was pricing. He gave me the car key and sat on the passenger seat

"When we got to a filling station, he asked me to pull over as he needed to buy fuel for the car. He told me to wait so that he would go and get some cash to buy the fuel. I waited for his return for three hours but he was nowhere to be found, and I was already causing a queue at the filling station. I called his line several times but it was switched off. It was already dusk so I drove to my residence at almost 8pm. My phone had gone flat then, so I charged it when I got home and called him again. His line was switched off.

"The following day, I drove down to Delta for business. That same day, I saw my picture that he posted on the internet, calling me a car thief. His call also came in and he told me he had informed the police and they were tracking the car. This made me mad at him. It was crazy. I switched off my line known to him and started using my other line.

"My uncle saw me with the car and he asked me about it. I told him how the car came by and he got mad and slapped me. He said he would not allow me to drive the car but would report it at a police station

“I ran from him because he assaulted me. I was eventually arrested in Benin, Edo State. I didn’t steal the car, I only drove it from Abuja to Delta. If I were the car dealer, I would just look for a way to get the car back. That would work,” he added.

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday reportedly did not participate in a live economic discussion at the current world leaders’ summit in Paris.

According to Peoples Gazette, Tinubu instead delegated the country’s ambassador to represent him.

The reason for Tinubu’s absence from the stage remains unclear, as his office had previously announced his presence in France to attend the summit and discuss Africa’s economic future.

The summit, a two-day event taking place at Palais Brongniart in Paris, is designed to explore efficient ways to combat poverty and the negative impacts of climate change on the global financial system.

Tinubu was expected to join the debate at 6:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. Nigerian time) on Thursday. His team had indicated he was ready for this appearance, his first since taking office as president on May 29.

In Tinubu’s stead, Nigerian Ambassador, Adamu Ahmed participated in the event, sharing the stage with notable figures like David Craig, co-chair of the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD); Mark Carney of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ); Mary Schapiro of Bloomberg Global Public Policy; Sabine Mauderer of the Network for Greening the Financial System; and Catherine Mckenna, a United Nations special envoy.

Ahmed, while reading a prepared speech, said, “We believe we’ve more pressing social issues in Africa. The argument has been that world leaders should elevate social issues just like environmental issues. I must commend President Macronwho has brought the issue of poverty to the table. This summit is about climate, people and diversity.

“The severe financial and economic crisis that African countries found themselves in after COVID-19 is all over. There are economic difficulties, and we’ve all realized that public resources would no longer solve the problem, we need to track private capital and for us to track the capital, and we need to compete with other countries around the world.

“It is no longer business as usual for African countries, we now need to join the discourse. We need to compete with the rest of the world. We welcome the idea of President Macronto develop Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) because we feel it is an open free repository that will greatly help African countries.

“The message from the African continent is that we are on board, we want to join the international community. We are now seeing movement from mere commitment to concrete transition plans.

“For example, in Nigeria, we enacted the Climate Change Act in 2021 which enables us to establish the Climate Change Council in which the president (Tinubu) is the head. It enables us to establish a climate change fund and National Action Plan on climate change which clearly reels our road map to the net zero target. We put our target to 2060 because we are aware of the enormous challenges we are confronting. We have tried to form regional partnerships as African countries.”

The trip was Tinubu’s first abroad since becoming Nigeria’s president on May 29.

A group of daredevil gunmen opened fire on President Muhammadu Buhari's advance convoy deployed ahead of his Trip to Daura, Katsina state for Sallah Celebrations on Tuesday.

EWN has learnt of an attack carried out by unknown gunmen on the police area command in Ogidi, Anambra state, Eastern Nigeria.

The early morning attack on Saturday was reported to have been carried out by the gunmen who stormed the area command in their numbers as many police officers are feared dead or injured.

The armed men burnt down the command's facilities, including police patrol vans and other vehicles.
