(June 18th) On this day in 1967, the Monterey International Pop Festival in San Francisco entered its second day and featured an array of Bay Area bands. Big Brother & the Holding Company, Country Joe & the Fish, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, and Jefferson Airplane—with the advantage of performing on their home turf—successfully ushered in the Summer of Love in true rock & roll fashion. But it wasn’t until later that night, when Otis Redding (backed by Booker T. & the MG’s) took to the stage, and truly captured the historical significance of the festival in marking the arrival of a new era in popular music.

(June 17th) On this day in 1970, Laura Nyro and Miles Davis split an eclectic bill at the Fillmore East in New York City. The first night of a four night run, Davis played to a hip crowd of young concertgoers that he had been acquainted with the previous year; in response to the new directions of rock & roll in the late 1960s, he merged free range psychedelia with amplified jazz and eventually released the well-received Bi***es Brew LP. Capturing one of the greatest live shows of his career, “Directions” and “It’s About That Time” offer a radical shift in which rock audiences began to mature into jazz crowds.

(June 10th) On this day in 1973, the Grateful Dead performed at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, DC. With support from the Allman Brothers Band and Wet Willie, the show is noteworthy as one of the longest the Dead ever played. Clocking in at nearly five hours, the band rolls through some of their greatest hits (“Dark Star,” “Truckin’”) and an extended encore featuring special guests and classic rock & roll covers (“That’s All Right, Mama,” “Johnny B. Goode”).

(June 6th) On this day in 1971, the Mothers Of Invention—under the stewardship of Frank Zappa—headlined the Fillmore East in New York City. The second of a two night stand at the legendary venue in its final month of operation, the show is even more well-known for the guest appearances of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The collaboration of these rock & roll forces, though worlds apart in terms of outlook, would result in a night of electric screeching (“Well”) and outrageous grooves (“Scumbag”).

Performing a total of four shows during their short stint at the legendary venue, the band recorded the gigs for their Performance: Rockin’ The Fillmore LP released later that year. The final date of their spring trek along the East Coast, the band entertained nearly 11,000 hardcore fans by launching their show with a triple hitter consisting of “Bertha” > “Good Lovin’” > “Sugaree” before delivering a somber “Candyman” and rollicking “US Blues” to keep audiences moving.

(May 27th) On this day in 1972, Alice Cooper performed at the Miami Jai-Alai Fronton on a bill that included Dr. John and Todd Rundgren. Wrapping up their exhausting Killer tour shortly before the recording sessions for the School’s Out LP, the band still managed to tap into the high-octane rock & roll that propelled their initial success: “Be My Lover,” “You Drive Me Nervous,” and “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” match—if not surpass—the intensity of the studio tracks in almost every regard.

(May 23rd) On this day in 1976, Bob Dylan performed at Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins, CO with his Rolling Thunder R***e. Recorded and filmed for an NBC broadcast and the live album Hard Rain, Dylan and his band ran through older material before being joined onstage by Joan Baez for a series of four songs. The show is the second-to-last stop on the tour, and while not as energized as other performances, Dylan still finds his sarcastic grit on the mournful “You’re A Big Girl Now” and the griping “Idiot Wind.”

The setlists across both shows were identical; the superior song recording from either show was remixed and mastered for release on the collaborative album Bongo Fury. “Debra Kadabra,” “Carolina Hard-Core Ecstasy,” and “Muffin Man” are amongst the hardest rocking numbers the duo had performed up to that point, and showcase the last tour in which the Mothers of Invention backed Zappa as his band.
