Traffic control by number plates.
In order to control the number of vehicles accessing the Household Waste Recycling Centres, a traffic control system will be in place.
This will be based on odd and even number plates and will work on a four week rota to limit the amount of traffic visiting the centres on any one day.
Number plates ending with odd numbers - one, three, five, seven and nine - will be allowed on the days shown.
Number plates ending with even numbers - zero, two, four, six and eight - will be allowed on the days shown.
Recycling Centre Rules
🐝 Open for bagged general waste only, no recycling accepted
🐝 Only 1 person per vehicle
🐝 Cars and small vans only - No transit type vans and vehicles with trailers
🐝 No pedestrian access
🐝 SUEZ staff will not be able to help unload your vehicle
🐝 Please take proof of address with you such as your council tax bill, gas or electric bill to show you live in one of the 9 councils in Greater Manchester.
You can show your bill on your mobile phone.
You can keep your car window closed in order to stay safe.
🐝 ANPR and CCTV are in operation, trade waste is not allowed.
🐝 Please expect to queue for longer than usual due to social distancing restrictions in place. Please make sure you don’t block access for other road users
If you can, store your waste and recycling at home for as long as possible to help us keep the sites open for others who may need them more urgently.
You must observe Government instruction on social distancing. If large numbers of people visit the sites or fail to follow the guidelines they will be forced to close.
Key Facts to remember.
Please only visit if it is essential, social distancing measures will be in place at the centres as well as traffic controls on the highway, so expect long queues.
Visitors may be turned away if the queues are too long and asked to return at another time – please do not travel to the recycling centre unless it is absolutely necessary.
They will only be accepting general waste (black bag waste).
Please think about others at this difficult time and only go to the recycling centres if you are struggling to cope with your bin collections and cannot store your waste safely at home.
They will not be accepting any other type of recycling or garden waste at this time so please keep this at home until we can operate a normal service and use your council garden and recycling bin collections.
To reduce traffic they’ve introduced new measures so please check which day you can visit. You can only go to the recycling centre on certain days depending on whether you have an odd or even number in your vehicle registration.
Keeping waste at home is inconvenient but the priority is the health of the public, the SUEZ operatives running the sites and the officers that are carrying out the traffic management outside the sites.
Please observe social distancing rules, wash your hands often and only visit the recycling centres if absolutely necessary.
Some recycling centres are providing a limited service for bagged general waste only. Not all sites have opened due to shortages of staff and all sites have reduced opening hours.
Members of the public should only take their waste to a recycling centre if the journey is ‘essential’, i.e. because the build-up of waste in the home may pose a risk of injury or to health. (Defra definition)
Any abusive behaviour towards to the staff will not be tolerated and we may be forced to close. The new rules in place for your safety and that of our staff.
Regular updates on queuing times will be posted on social media.
What can I take to the recycling centre?
You can only take bagged general waste that you can’t fit in your household bin such as nappies, plastic packaging, polystyrene and other household waste that can’t be recycled.
Please do not take any recycling, clothing or electrical items to the recycling centre, these cannot be recycled at this current time and if mixed in with general waste, can damage the machines used to process the waste, potentially resulting in fires, delays, and costly repairs.
What should I do with electrical items?
Please do not take any electrical items to the recycling centre, please store them safely at home. Please do not put electrical items in any of your wheelie bins at home, they can cause fires and damage to waste sorting equipment.
The recycling processor they use to recycle electrical items is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic and not accepting any recycling.
What should I do with wood and wooden furniture?
Please continue to store this at home.
Please DO NOT BURN WOOD – it is ILLEGAL TO BURN WASTE AT YOUR PROPERTY.
The wood reprocessor is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic so you cannot currently recycle wood or wooden furniture at the recycling centres.
What do I do with garden waste?
Garden waste cannot be taken to the recycling centres at this time. If your council is collecting your garden waste bin, please use this and store any extra garden waste on your property.
At the recycling centres in Wigan, they can take all types of recycling, why can’t you do the same?
The recycle centres in Greater Manchester are much busier than the ones in Wigan with on average 2,000 visitors a day. In order to keep traffic moving and get people through the sites safely, you can only take general waste. We will review the situation and consider adding more containers for other types of recycling if we can do this safely without adding to the traffic queues.
I am a trader and I normally use the weighbridges and pay for my waste disposal, are these open?
Yes, the weighbridges operated by SUEZ are still open as these sites are where the council vehicles deliver the waste and recycling collected from household bins. They are currently accepting trade waste, but only to businesses who have trade credit account registered with SUEZ.
To protect staff, they can’t currently take card payments at the weighbridges. These are separate sites to the household waste recycling centres. All traders must wear PPE.
Advice on dealing with waste, if you are unwell with Covid 19.
🐝 If you’re self-isolating and feeling unwell, double-bag your personal waste (such as tissues) and put aside for at least 72 hours (3 days) before putting them in your bin. Do not visit any HWRC’s if anyone in your household has experienced Covid-19 symptoms in the past 72 hours
🐝 Do not put tissues into your paper recycling as they cannot be recycled.
🐝 Disinfect your bag, bin, box and caddy handles before and after you touch them.
🐝 Keep your distance when workers are collecting your waste and recycling.
🐝 Disinfect you bag, bin, box and caddy handles again, before and after collection.
🐝 Wash your hands thoroughly after handling and disinfecting your bags, bins, boxes and caddies.
🐝 Put wipes, cloths, gloves, etc. used for cleaning your bags, bins, boxes and caddies into your generalwaste bin or bag, as these can’t be recycled.
Keep those in your household safe. Your collections staff are key workers, please keep them safe too.
