APC, PDP clash over Osun Amotekun boss appointment

The Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State on Tuesday said the Amotekun security network might become a failure with the appointment of Amitolu Sh*ttu as its director-general in the state.

According to a statement by the party Chairman, Olasoji Adagunodo, the new Amotekun boss is a member of the All Progressives Congress.

Adagunodo said although Oyetola could engage whoever he considered good enough for the position, such appointment should not be done at the expense of people’s security.

He said, “Amotekun may be heading for the rocks if technical handlers of the outfit are highly partisan persons, which the appointment of Mr Amitolu seems to represent.

“The appointment patently runs foul of the state House of Assembly legislation establishing Amotekun in the state, either in title or descriptive stipulations of persons suitable for such an appointment.”

However, the APC Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi, queried the PDP’s opposition to the appointment of Sh*ttu, labelling the opposition party a noisemaker.

“The governor, after due and widespread consultations with stakeholders to tackle insecurity on a long-term basis, appointed Amitolu Sh*ttu as the director-general of Amotekun, the well-received South-West security outfit,” Oyatomi said.

Two Coronavirus Patients Die in Osun

The governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola, confirmed the death of two people on Sunday.

Mr Oyetola made the confirmation during a press briefing at the Government House, Osogbo. He also confirmed the 12 new cases earlier reported by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Saturday.

He said out of the 12 new COVID-19 patients, two have died.
"The casualties are from Ede and in Ile-Ife," he said as he appealed to security officials not to compromise the lockdown order.

He also stressed the compulsory use of face masks across the state.

"The State of Osun made significant progress in the fight against coronavirus in two weeks, having no new confirmed cases and discharging 19 of the 20 successfully without any death. We were on our way to containing the virus, in spite of the galloping figures in other states.

"However, it is saddening that we have recorded 12 new cases in the state, including three of our health workers, with two fatalities, both of whom were males with underlying health conditions", the governor added.

Speaking further about the locations of the newly confirmed cases, Mr Oyetola said that the cases emerged from Ede, Irewole, Ejigbo and Ife East local government areas of the state.

"Six of the newly detected 12 cases were returnees from neighbouring West African country, Benin Republic; two recently returned to the state from Lagos; three had contact with previous confirmed cases; while the remaining one, who was suffering from Tuberculosis, was hurriedly ferried in from Ibadan.

"The cases we have on our hands are simply the consequences of breaching the lockdown directives of the state government by some citizens of the state", he added.

"Let us, therefore, obey the directives of the government so that we can return to our normal and unrestricted routines in due time.

"Let me use this opportunity to remind us all that the laws guiding the operation of this lockdown and the general security of the people are in force and the relevant security agencies are on notice to ensure compliance and the safety and security of the people."

An eyewitness, who lives in a nearby village said that the terrible condition of the bridge has caused many deaths along the axis.

He added that several calls on the government to fix the bridge to avert avoidable deaths were to no avail.

Also speaking, a relative of the deceased, who preferred anonymity said “The deceased were heading to one of the villages in the community to bring their father to Osogbo for the weekend when the unfortunate incident happened.

“The deceased were cousins. It is very unfortunate that all efforts made to save them proved abortive as they were brought out of the river dead by people who spent several hours trying to rescue them, he said.

Meanwhile, the head of Odu village, Chief Maroof Adekunle has called on Osun State government to come to the aid of the communities in the area by fixing the bridge to avoid further deaths.

“The bridge connects Koka, Omu, Odu, Anjo, Kole and many other villages and hamlets to the state capital, and we are pleading with the state government to help us,” Adekunle averred.

Osun threatens to shut markets over filth

Osun State Government on Thursday gave traders in Igbona Market, Osogbo, 24 hours ultimatum to keep the market tidy or risk closure.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mr Sola Oladepo, handed down the threat when he led law enforcement officers of the Osun Waste Management Agency to markets within Osogbo metropolis.

The team visited Alekuwodo, MDS, Igbona and Owode markets, all located within Osogbo, the state capital.

Oladepo, who lamented that filth had taken over the market, warned that the government would no longer condone unhygienic living by residents.

He stated that during the weekly environmental sanitation hours, traders should not sit at home, adding that they were expected to be in the markets to clean up the surroundings.

“Traders should desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the middle of the road, they should keep their stalls tidy and dispose of wastes only when refuse truck comes to their location,” Oladepo said.

Also speaking during the visit, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Sanitation, Mr Rufus Oyegbile, urged the traders to cooperate with Oyetola’s administration and the environmental law enforcement agency in the interest of the general wellbeing of the people.

According to him, traders should not block drainage channels to avoid flooding, as lives and property of the citizens would be subjected to avoidable risk whenever flood occurs.

Osun Reps member, Salam, tackles Fashola over comment on Nigerian roads

A lawmaker representing Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency of Osun State in the House of Representatives, Bamidele Salam, has berated the Honourable Minister for Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola over his recent comment on the state of Nigerian roads.

Fashola, in a recent interview, was quoted as saying, “the roads are not as bad as they are often portrayed. I know that this is going to be your headline, but the roads are not that bad.”

In a swift reaction, therefore, Salam, in a press statement said such statement intrinsically indicates lack of sensitivity on the part of public office holders to the plights of the people and reality of their socioeconomic status.

He added that there is an urgent need for public office holders to get familiar with the level of frustration and psychological trauma Nigerians are going through on daily basis as a result of deplorable condition of roads across the nation.

Salam said “I found this statement, which had been repeated by the Hon. Minister at least on two previous occasions as a clear indication that some of us in public offices are not at all in tune with the horrendous realities of our fellow citizens’ daily experience.

"As a Member of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, I will be throwing a road travel challenge to the Hon Minister and all Persons concerned to avoid air travel for all local trips in the next 90 days.

“If we will agree to this challenge, we may come back with a better appreciation of the true state of our road infrastructure and the desperate things we need to do to save our economy from further disruptions as a result of the burgeoning crisis in the road transportation sector.

“This 90-days Road Travel Challenge will hopefully elicit reactions from relevant stakeholders, while Nigerians hope to get some succour in the coming days”.

Appeal Court upholds Osun Rep Salam’s election

The court of appeal sitting in akure, ondo state, on Friday upheld the election of Hon. Bamidele Salam as the lawmaker representing Ede North, Ede south, Egbedore and Ejigbo federal constituency in the house of representatives.

the all progressives congress (apc) candidate for the constituency, H.on. Adejare Bello, had challenged the declaration of Hon. Salam (PDP) as the winner of the election at the elections petitions tribunal.

On september 2, the lower court had nullified the election of salam after canceling the results of some units in Ede South, Ede North, Ejigbo and Egbedore as a result of over-voting.

Dissatisfied with the ruling of the tribunal that nullified his election and ordered rerun election in selected units across the federal constituency, Salam approached the court of appeal to set aside the ruling of the tribunal.

Salam in his appeal cited 38 grounds of appeal, covering errors in law, misapplication of laws, clear bias and wrong interpretation of the laws and guidelines covering election processes in Nigeria.

On his own part, the APC candidate, Bello also approached the court of appeal in a cross-appeal, seeking the total cancellation of the house of representatives election for the federal constituency.

Confusion as armed soldiers invade Osun police command hq

Some armed soldiers Monday afternoon besieged Osun State Command headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Osogbo, creating tension in the area.

According to some traders with shops near the police headquarters, three of the soldiers had already entered into the command’s premises before others were stopped at the gate.

The traders around the state command hurriedly closed their shops for fear of unknown as the soldiers were wielding arms and does not want to be caught in any eventualities.

A trader, who simply identified himself as Segun, said that about 28 soldiers were seen at the entrance of the command engaging policemen at the gate in hot argument around 12:30pm.

“Later, a senior police officer with the name Edward Ebuka, intervened and prevented the soldiers from entering the command.

The soldiers, although, left the area, but they never seem satisfied with the situation, because I believe some of them were likely detained by the police,” he added.

However, a police source, who preferred anonymity disclosed that three soldiers that had already entered into the command’s premises were arrested and disarmed by the policemen, while others left.

The source added that the mission of the soldiers in the area might not be unconnected with the arrest and detention of a soldier arrested in Osogbo for an offence that could not be immediately ascertained last Saturday.

Alleged perjury: Lawyer demands Osun lawmaker’s prosecution

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, has been urged to investigate and prosecute Osun State House of Assembly member representing Obokun State Constituency, Adeyemi Adewumi, over alleged perjury before the Court of Appeal, Akure.

In a petition against the lawmaker, signed by one Oyinola Ajayi of the law firm of Ajibola Basiru and co, and delivered at the Inspector General’s office in Abuja on Friday, copies of which were forwarded to the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 11, Osogbo, Osun State Commissioner of Police and the Director, Department of State Security Service (DSS), the lawmaker was alleged to have lied under oath.

Recall that the Court of Appeal in Akure, Ondo State, had last week fined the lawmaker N100,000 for presenting a purported Record of Proceeding of the state election petition tribunal, which was alleged to be fake, during the hearing of his appeal against the judgment of the Osun election tribunal, which nullified his election.

At a press briefing in Osogbo, Mr. Kolapo Alimi, one of the lawyers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its House of Assembly candidate in Obokun State Constituency, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, said, Adewumi lied under oath by swearing to an affidavit to complement a fraudulently generated document, which he allegedly presented as authentic.

“Section 118 of the Criminal Code provides, “Any person who commits perjury is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years. If the offender commits the offence in order to procure the conviction of another person for an offence punishable with death or with imprisonment for life, he is liable to imprisonment for life,” Alimi quoted from the petition.

Alimi stressed that the above cited sections of the Criminal Code showed that perjury constituted a grave crime, saying it was clearly seen in the record of proceedings of the lower tribunal that the statements made by Adewunmi in his affidavit constituted perjury.

He, therefore, demanded the investigation and prosecution of the PDP lawmaker at the appropriate court of law.

APC warns Osun exco on ‘tough’ job

All Progressives Congress in Osun State on Wednesday told the newly sworn-in cabinet members in the administration of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola that the challenge before them is herculean.

The Osun APC in a statement from its Directorate of Publicity, Research and Strategy, signed by its Director, Kunle Oyatomi, said: “As you take the oath to serve the people of Osun, recognise that whatever success you make of this ‘consolidation exercise’ will determine the shape and content of what development will look like, going forward.

“You have been carefully selected to shoulder this epic responsibility of consolidating the unprecedented progress made in Osun over the last nine years.”

The party added: “But you must always remember that there are worshipers of the Moloch, who will sacrifice anyone and anything to ensure that every development brought to Osun by the APC is destroyed.

“They are shadowy creatures, who live in denial and are so consumed by hate; their sense of appreciation of good work appears virtually dead.

“We, therefore, urge all of you to be excellent team players, focused on the goals of government to make Osun one of the most progressive states in Nigeria.”
