In practicing , we can learn a lot from other disciplines. For example, the entrepreneur Naval Ravikant says that business partners should be chosen that fill three criteria: high intelligence, energy and integrity. I’ll elaborate on each in this post and how it applies to collaboration in a One Health approach.

1) High Intelligence: This does not mean having a high GPA/IQ. Rather, it refers to being knowledgeable or skilled in the thing you are partnering with them to do. Essentially, their purpose should align with their knowledge-base/skillset

2) High Energy: now that you have found someone with the right skills or knowledge, do they have the energy to follow through with it. Something to consider is that someone who is high energy in one domain might not be in others, so this should be evaluated in a task-specific way

3) High Integrity: Naval defines it as “what someone does, despite what they say they do.” Integrity is the hardest to evaluate, but is very important for building long-term relationships. It also sets the foundation for trust which is essential for productive collaboration

Do you think this three part checklist applies well to collaboration in a setting?

Why should specialists also learn to be better generalists?

Having a basic understanding of many topics is helpful even to a specialist. As problems arise outside your wheelhouse, this basic understanding can lead you to find the right people to help

The last week has left me struggling to comprehend the events leading to George Floyd’s death at the hands of police brutality. After a long reflection, it is clear that we as a society aren’t doing enough to make changes happen. Stories like George Floyd’s have taken place in the past such as Trayvon Martin and many others, which have led to protests with similar media coverage to what is taking place now. It’s not always easy to be actively urging change in the short term, but it’s a lot harder to keep activism strong in the long term. Long term advocacy is what we need from all of us, not strictly on the streets but also in our places of work, in our interactions with one another and throughout all avenues of our daily lives. Change must be lasting, and with it must come lasting anger, remembrance and advocacy from all of us. At the same time, I recognize the mental fatigue that comes with the anger and we must not forget to care for ourselves as we advocate, so that our voices remain strong.

Stay loud, stay strong, stay healthy
