UNITED STATES: Biden and Trump to Feature in 90-Minute Debate Ahead of November Elections

The long awaited Biden vs Trump debate has been scheduled to hold on June 27 ahead of a historic rematch between an immediate past and succeeding U.S presidents in November.

Moderated by CNN, rules are in place for the debate to restrict an opponent from interrupting a co-debater while speaking, to avoid rash exchange of words between Trump and Biden as in the previous debate.

Microphones will be muted until a debater is required to give own points and no debater is allowed to read from a paper during the debate, a measure that poses a disadvantage to Biden who is usually criticized as reading answers to questions at press briefings from written notes.

SPORTS: Football World Loses Two Stars, Kevin Campbell and Matija Sarkic

Two football stars, Kevin Campbell who played as an Arsenal and Everton forward and Matija Sarkic, former Wolves, Blues, Villa and Millwall goalkeeper and also played for Millwall have died at ages 54 and 26 respectively.

Kevin Campbell made his last career appearance in a 2007 before retirement while Matija last featured in a last week match between his country, Montenegro and Belgium.

SOUTH AFRICA: Ramaphosa Re-elected, Consolidates Party's Over 30-Year Dominance

Retaining the African National Congress (ANC) party's dominance in national politics since independence from the British-Dutch apartheid regime, South Africa's incumbent president Cyril Ramaphosa has secured a majority vote from the 7th South African parliament to win in the presidential election for a second term in office.

The ANC formed a coalition with the Democratic Alliance (DA) against opposition parties coalition.

World leaders, especially China and Russia alongside pro BRICS countries have felicitated with president Ramaphosa on his election victory which has kept South Africa allied with China and Russia in opposition to the political stances of the western world on major global issues.

NIGER: Country Halts Oil Exports Barter Payment to China, Breaches Loan Settlement in Response to Tension With Benin

An escalating diplomatic tension between West Africa's Republic of Benin and Republic of Niger has resulted in the suspension of crude oil shipment from Niger to China, through the Sèmè Kpodji terminal in neighbouring Benin.

Niger makes the shipments to China as a barter payment for the $400 million commodity-backed loan deal with the China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) which partly invested $4.6 billion in the Nigerien petroleum industry.

Provoked by the arrest and detention of Nigerien oil workers since May by the authorities in Benin following its collaboration with West Africa's economic bloc, ECOWAS to bar Niger from making exports through the Sèmè Kpodji terminal due to the ousting of the Nigerien civilian government and millitary takeover, the shipments suspension by Niger has breached its deal to ship crude oil for 12 months to China to repay the 7% interest CNPC loan.

KENYA: Magistrate Fatally Shot by Police Officer During Court Session

Kenya's Makadara principal magistrate, Monica Kivuti has died a day after suffering severe injuries from a shooting on the chest and leg by a police officer who targeted her over refusal to grant bail to his detained wife.

Monica was fatally shot by the officer identified as Kipchirchir Kipruto inside the Makadara court in Nairobi Kenya on Thursday, June 13 during a court hearing on a case of financial fraud involving his wife.

Kipruto who heads a police station in western Kenya's Londiana was present at the court hearing where he opened fire on the magistrate who ruled out a bail for his wife, also shooting three police officers before he was killed.

GHANA: Government Hospital MD Suspended Over Death of Patient Dumped at Roadside by Staff

Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital's Medical Director has been suspended temporarily after a demented accident patient admitted in the hospital was driven out of the hospital and dumped in a bush along the road where she died days later.

Ghana Health Service directed the medical director's suspension pending an investigation to validate viral media and witness reports on the incident.

The deceased patient was an elderly woman who had been accommodated for weeks in the hospital before her cruel eviction by hospital staff after her family failed to show up to pay her accumulated medical bills.

BRITAIN: Welsh Princess Makes First Public Appearance Since Cancer Diagnosis

Ahead of the Trooping the Colour event, a major date on the British calendar, Catherine, the princess of Wales have appeared in public for the first time alongside her family since she was diagnosed of an undisclosed form of cancer following the cancer diagnosis of King Charles III who is marking his birthday at the Buckingham palace.

Commenting on her health situation, the British royalty noted that she is “not out of the woods yet” but “making good progress” as she undergoes further cancer treatment procedures.

RUSSO-UKRAINIAN WAR: Putin Proposes Ceasefire Deal to Ukraine, Russia Avoids Swiss Peace Conference

As the Russo-Ukrainian war continues into more than two years, Russia's president Vladimir Putin has proposed a ceasefire deal that requires Ukraine to abandon its ambition to join the U.S-led NATO and forfeit four Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia in addition to Crimea, since the 2022 Russian invasion.

In what questions the genuity and intention of Putin's ceasefire proposal, Russia has however declined to participate in a multinational Swiss conference to negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

As the Iranian proxy, Hezbollah continues to launch missile barrages into northern Israel, Israeli leaders have called for a swift winding up of IDF operations in Rafah, Gaza in about 2 weeks to begin a new millitary operation in Lebanon.

While several Islamist media have mocked the Israeli intention to conclude its operations in Rafah, Iran has expressed concerns over the threat of dislodgement that a potential Israeli operation in Lebanon poses to its Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah and warned that Iran will confront Israeli forces if it hosts a ground operation in Lebanon besides its missile exchanges with Hezbollah.

A U.S naval operation has destroyed 2 bomb-laden patrol boats, a UAV and 7 radar sites operated by the Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi armed group that have continued to endanger merchant vessels on the Red Sea shipping route.

The recent counter attacks targeting the Iranian proxy in Yemen comes after continued attacks by the armed group on American military deployments in the Middle-East, as well as cargo vessels sailing through the critical global shipping route of the Red Sea corridor.

UNITED STATES: 75-Year Old Activist Sentenced to Prison Over Anti-Abortion Protest, Despite Supreme Court Abortion Ban

Inspite of a U.S Supreme Court ruling that overturned the 5-decade old Roe vs Wade precedent to criminalize abortion in the United States since 2022, a court trial has convicted 75-year old Christian woman, Paulette Harlow who took to the front of a Washington DC abortion clinic in 2020 alongside 9 others to protest against abortion, charging her with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act and conspiracy to violate civil rights.

Her elderly husband reacted to the sentence, expressing concerns that his wife might die in prison but the judge presiding over her case insisted that Paulette “make an effort to remain alive”.

Commenting on the court verdict and judge's insistence, Paulette said “My body will be placed wherever you place it. My spirit and my heart belong to the Lord. That cannot be imprisoned and that brings me great joy”.

LGBTQ: U.S Judge Blocks Rule Shielding Transgenders in Schools as a Vulnerable Group

In what is now cheered as a win for democracy, a U.S judge has struck down a Title IX rule expansion to accommodate LGBTQ students in schools as a vulnerable group, allowing abortion access for students in U.S schools, as well as cross-dressing.

The judge criticized the rule expansion made by the Biden administration as an opportunistic exploitation of the Title IX rule (a federal law prohibiting sexuality-based discrimination) in an “unlawful agency action taken in excess of their authority”, temporarily blocking the expansion in the U.S states of Mississippi, Idaho, Louisiana and Montana.

Criticizing it as an “abuse of power...[and a] threat to democracy”, the judge cited the Title IX rule expansion as applicable to women and girls, not LGBTQ students and insisted that any potential change affecting the U.S school system should be decided by the country's Education Department and not the U.S presidency.

U.S federal judges have expressed their support for the Louisiana judge decision, posing a major legal setback for the Biden administration policy on promoting LGBTQ in the United States.

TENSION: U.S Deploys Submarine to Cuba to Counter Russian Presence

A day after Russian military vessels docked at Havana, Cuba which is 30 miles away from Florida, the United States has deployed its USS Helena nuclear capable submarine to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

In a bid to dissuade Cuban co-oporation with Russia, U.S president Joe Biden had also hinted at delisting Cuba from being considered a state sponsor of terrorism and likely relax U.S sanctions on the Caribbean country to improve diplomatic relations with the country against the latest Russian influence.

GHANA: Demented Old Patient Dumped in Bush by Hospital Staff, Dies Days Later

An old woman suffering from dementia have been found dead, three days after she was abandoned in a bush at Ghana's Gomoa Ojobi.

The now deceased patient suffered an accident that caused her dementia and was hospitalized at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist hospital, a government medical facility in central Ghana but weeks after her family failed to show up to foot her accumulated medical bills, some Winneba hospital staff drove her out of the hospital in a car and dumped her at a bush along the road in Gomoa Ojobi.

Elon Musk has maintained the portfolio of an employee at Tesla, despite being a major shareholder and the company's CEO. According to Musk, he had not been paid for any of his works at Tesla for almost, although the situation is as agreed between the company and Musk.

The billion dollar pay package drives up Musk's net worth to over $200 billion, likely reinstating him as world richest.

Reacting to a Delaware court ruling that opposed the massive compensation as excessive, Tesla is reportedly moving away from the U.S state of Delaware to reincorporate in Texas.

NATO: Defense Ministers Meet in Brussels to Discuss Ukraine, China, Nuclear Threats

Over 50 NATO countries are meeting today in Brussels at the Defense Minister level to commemorate the D-Day 80th anniversary and for a monthly gathering to discuss tender a policy framework to be finalized in July.

Major topics to be discussed in the meeting include growing Russian nuclear threats, collective support for Ukraine as the war with Russia grinds on, as well as tackling China's increasing dominance on the world stage.

The Brussels meeting will be followed by a NATO Summit in Washington in July.

SPORTS: Messi Hints at Retirement, Refuses to Play For Home Country Due to Age

Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer in July, Lionel Messi has announced his decision to not feature in the Argentine squad, saying he is unable to play in every tournament at his age and coupled with his engagement with the United States' Inter Miami playing in the ongoing Copa America.

Copa America ends this month, just a few weeks before the Paris Olympics kicks off.

IRAQ: Fire Guts Oil Refinery

A storage facility at the oil refinery in the northwestern Iraqi city of Erbil is currently burning uncontrollably as 12 oil tanks explode to worsen the situation.

This follows a 2022 incident of fire outbreak caused by terror rocket attacks targeting the same oil refinery.

Fire fighters and civil defense teams are on ground to limit damages but are still unable to contain the spreading inferno, leaving several people injured.

NIGERIA: Nollywood Actress Loses Certificate Over Implicating Podcast Comments, Interviewer's Contract Terminated

South-eastern Nigeria's University of Nnamdi Azikiwe has revoked the degree certificate of the Nollywood actress, Chinwe Splendor who confessed in a public interview that she secured her grades during university education by having sexual activities with her lecturers.

Chinwe was issued a 48-hour ultimatum to return the certificate to the university.

She also claimed to have flirted with real estate Managing Directors in the country's southeastern state of Anambra, prompting the termination of her interviewer, Chijioke Igwendu (renown as Yanbaba) and wife's brand ambassadorial contract with Pool King Real Estate Company.

Reacting to the ultimatum, Chinwe said,
"I Want to share something with you guys, the university I attended sent me an email to return my certificate within 48 hours. I want to ask, is it right ?

That certificate, I earned it, and I worked hard for it. Why should I return it, they sent me an email to return a certificate I worked so hard for.

Ok, If it's like that, I know many of my course mates that'll return their own certificates. I'm going through a lot, I'm really d£pr£ss£d, but I'm trying hard to be strong for myself.

If it's like that, I know so many people that'll return their own certificates, but I'll not mention names, what I'm saying is that I worked hard for it and earned it.

I'm now a born again, I have repented, I have changed, all these things are in the past now, let the past be in the past. I'm really broken, is this right?

GHANA: Cyclist Dead, Others Injured in Auto-Crash on Highway

A motorcyclist have been killed in an accident along the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the Ghana's eastern region.

Three passengers aboard a sprinter bus involved in the crash also suffered injuries from the incident which happened at about 2:30pm local time on Monday, June 10.

The highway has been a notorious scene of auto-crash over the years, including an accident involving the Ghanaian presidential convoy in May.

EL SALVADOR: Country Opens “Mega Prison", Transfers Thousands of Inmates

Thousands of suspected gangsters and other offenders including 13-year olds held in El Salvador prisons have been moved to Cecot, the country's “mega prison” which has a holding capacity of 40 000 inmates.

Cecot boasts itself as the largest prison in the Americas and serves to contain government crackdown on crime in the Central American country.

Human rights activists however criticize the poor living conditions the inmates are subjected to in overcrowded cells with insufficiently limited facilities.

UNITED STATES: President's Son Convicted of Criminal Charges, First in History, Likely to Face 25-Year Imprisonment

U.S president Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden has been convicted of all criminal charges against him, making him the first child of a U.S president to be convicted of criminality in American history.

Hunter was charged with
–Making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm
–Making a false statement to a licensed fi****ms dealers
–Possession of firearm as an unlawful user or addict

The president's son is reported to have committed the crime in 2018 while being a drug addict. President Biden mouthed acceptance of the the verdict as the rule of law in play after calling it a “foul play” staged by his political rivals to get at him in a 2020 comment he made.

Embracing his convicted son after the court ruling, the president however hinted at filing an appeal against the verdict to avoid a 25-year jail term.

Isreal vs Hezbollah: More than 100 Rockets Launched At Israel From Lebanon

A retaliatory attack by Hezbollah for the killing of four of its senior commanders last night in southern Lebanon has further escalated the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. This comes as Israel celebrates the “Feast of Weeks”.

The IDF reports that 160 rockets were launched by the Lebanon-based Iranian proxy through the Lebanese-Israeli border into northern Israel.

Tiberias and Israel's third largest city of Haifa were targeted in the attack as air raid sirens sound off across the region.

While Israel's iron dome air defense systems have been intercepting the rockets, local authorities are yet to inform of any casualties during today's attack.

NIGERIA: Port-Hacourt Murder Suspect Denies Responsibility of Girlfriend's Death (VIDEO) The suspect in the murder case of the 300 level Uniport student, Justina Otuene Nkang (fondly known as Tiffany), has denied the allegations against him, apparently blaming the lady's death on poisoning but failing to justify the mutilated corpse found in his apartment. In a video interview released this morning, he claims the victim had shared a dinner of Hollandia Yoghurt and snacks with him and had died from reasons he couldn't understand thereafter. Although the statement from the suspect wasn't clearly presented, his denial of the charges against him are unmistakable. News of an official investigation being opened has not been made available to the public just yet.
