The term 'Jeprox' was coined by the late Anak Bayan drummer and Pinoy Rock icon Edmond Fortuno? 'Jeprox' was a term used in the 1970's to describe male rockers who sported long hair and lived the rock n' roll lifestyle. It actually started as a shortened version of the phrase, "Jeepney Rock", which in itself described the classic and hard rock music that was being played inside local jeepneys at the time.

"‎Mark Cole's BBC show tagged them (Up Dharma Down) as the Asian band to most likely cross over to North American shores... Their eclectic music gave them the leverage to stand above most local bands in the Philippines, enough to be featured in the July 2007 issue of Time Magazine." -

- In 2000, the band released its first single, "Gusto ko ng baboy", about young man's fascination with pigs since his childhood. As the song progresses, it becomes a political tirade against corruption.

- In 2004, they released the single "Astro", from Urban Gulaman, depicting a person's addiction to cigarette smoking. This was titled after astro, a now-defunct brand of ci******es sold to the C-D-E category.

Rivermaya is an influential Filipino rock band founded in 1993. Their musical direction has evolved through standard rock, hard rock, pop, progressive, and other genres. They are the second biggest-selling artists in the Philippines.

Early years

The first line-up consisted of Jesse Gonzales on vocals, Kenneth Ilagan on guitars, Nathan Azarcon on bass, Rome Velayo on drums, and Rico Blanco on keyboards. They were managed by Lizza Nakpil and director Chito Roño who had the intention of molding the group into a rock show band. The band was then called Xaga.

Classic line-up and mainstream success

In the process of grueling practice sessions, Ilagan was replaced with Perfecto de Castro; Azarcon's childhood friend, Mark Escueta, to replace Velayo, as well as former classmate Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac to replace Gonzales. With Bamboo as frontman, the band members themselves decided to disband Xaga and form the band Rivermaya. They started putting together original songs like "Ulan" , "214", and "Awit ng Kabataan" (mostly composed by Rico Blanco) in demo form for prospective recording companies.

It was 1972 and the band was about to go onstage for a concert at Rizal Park. Smith had the urge to sit down somewhere and write a song. He recalled in a 2008 interview with The STAR: “Sa ladies’ room ako pumunta para isulat ‘yung Himig Natin kasi out-of-order ’yung men’s room eh. Ayoko maistorbo.”
