Platinum 25: Guardians of the Galaxy

Fun: Metal/10!
Time: ~18 hours

This game is the very definition of FUN! There are no dull moments between the constant bickering, name-calling, and jesting of the characters. I seriously want to be their friend lol.

The battle mechanics is simple yet it can be strategic and satisfying. It was really fun when all of the characters come together to gang up on one opponent.

Lastly, aside from being such an eye candy, the game is also a treat for your ears with its classic 80's soundtrack. I mean, a fight sequence with Hit Me with Your Best Shot, The Final Countdown, or We Built This City on the background?! Who wouldn't be hyped?!!

All in all, this is one of those games that may be enjoyed by people of all ages, regardless if they are Marvel fans or not. :)

I've been an avid fan of Lara Croft since I was a kid. I must have watched the movies countless times (especially the first one!) and I throughly enjoyed the game trilogy. This is definitely in my radar!

Crystal Dynamics, the makers of the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, announced that a new Tomb Raider game is in development, and it's being made on Epic's new Unreal Engine 5. They've described it as a "cinematic action-adventure experience."

Hellblade is a game that I find amazing and yet, I dread to play. What could have been finished in just one or two sittings, I finished in more than a month.

In Hellblade, you play as Senua - a warrior who braves the underworld to save the soul of her lover, Dillion.

Before you start the game, Ninja Theory warns you that “This game contains representations of psychosis. People with experience of psychosis as well as professionals in psychiatry have attested in these depictions.” True enough, early on in the game, you are given a taste of this experience with the different voices you hear. This would only intensify as you progress, combining sound and visuals to give you the full experience.

The developers represented psychosis in a delicate yet very effective manner that’s why it was hard for me to pick up the controller and play it. Once you fire up Hellblade, you do not play or control Senua. YOU ARE SENUA. There are times that the voices mock me, plant doubt in myself, instill fear in me. Sometimes, they encourage me or tell me what to do. Other times, they tell you both these contradicting things simultaneously in a chaotic fashion that I just want to scream at them to SHUT THE HELL UP!

Yes, you might spiral into the abyss together with Senua. Have fun.

All in all Hellblade is an experience like no other. It is a testament of the power of interactive media to tell a story and make us feel and understand things. It may be an independently published game, but it sure felt like a triple A title.

Short games to cleanse your palate:

Platinum 21: Distraint Deluxe Edition
Platinum 22: Distraint 2

In this 2D side scrolling, psychological horror game, you play as Mr. Price who tries to impress his bosses at the expense of the welfare of others. Was letting go of his morals worth it? You'd have to play to find out. :)

Interestingly, both games were made by just one person. It is amazing how he was able to tell a story with substance on a very limited resources.

I suggest you play both installments because Distraint 2 ties up very nicely with the first one. :)

Both games are on sale right now at the PS Store SG Region. You could get each of them for less than 3SGD.

Duty fulfilled, Ashen Ones.

I started my DS3 journey playing it like how I played Bloodborne. What can I do? Bloodborne was the only From Software exposure I had during that time. So I brought this aggressiveness I learned from Bloodborne to DS3. I traded hits with mobs not thinking that this time, I wouldn’t gain the health I lost in doing so. Needless to say, that did not end well. Lol.

So after a couple of tries, did I learn to be patient? No. I learned to run past the enemies. 😁

Kidding aside, it is interesting how one mechanic could affect you and force you to change your play style. So after 86 hours of DS3, I can proudly say that I am now 10% more patient in real life. Hahaha

After the muted, dark vibes of Bloodborne, it is refreshing to see SOME colors in DS3. Who didn’t marvel at the architectures in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, Anor Londo, and Archdragon Peak? Who wouldn’t want to roam around the carpeted floors of the Lothric Castle?

The base game in itself is a work of art. However, the DLCs take it to a next level. More than the level designs, the DLCs would give you some of the most unforgettable boss fight experiences. The way I was frozen in fear and amazement to Sister Friede and how my heart beat faster than the speed of light as Midir stomps me to death countless times would always be etched in my mind.

All in all, Dark Souls 3 further justifies why From Software is so highly regarded. Looking forward to play Elden Ring.

Appreciation post for this undervalued gem. I know everyone’s busy with HFW and/or Elden Ring but just in case you’re looking for something to play in between your long runs, may I suggest you to try Ghostrunner.

In this game, you play as a ninja in a cyberpunk world, slashing your way across throngs of enemies. Stakes are high because although you could kill your enemies in one hit, you could also die when they hit you once.

With its fast-paced gameplay and upbeat music, you are bound to have your adrenaline pumping the whole time!

Ghostrunner is this month’s free PS Plus game for PS5 users. I think it is also free on PS Now.

Last 10 seconds of my final encounter with Sister Friede! Oh wow I can't believe after countless tries, we've finally did it!

Seriously though, kahit ilang beses ako namatay sa kanya, I did not mind. May mga From Software bosses talaga that would leave you terrified and in awe at the same time. That was Sister Friede for me. Her cutscenes, her crazy combos oh wow those are a sight to see!

On to the Ringed City!
