LISTEN NOW 🔊 Link in bio

Last week was Coeliac Awareness week, and so we thought it would be fitting to discuss the ins and outs of Coeliac Disease.
Coeliac Disease is an autoimmune disease that can be associated with type 1 diabetes. In fact, it is estimated that 5 out of 100 people with T1D may also have Coelic Disease.
We chat about how it impacts people with type 1 and a few tips on how to manage it. Join Nic and Lara as they delve into what coeliac disease is, how it's diagnosed, and how to manage it.

Open-source, DIY Automated Insulin Devices (AIDs) are becoming more popular around the world. In this episode, Dr. Martin de Bock (paediatric endocrinologist & researcher) joins us again to talk about his latest research using open-source systems. These are off-label systems people with T1D are building and using to gain tighter glucose management. Martin's research highlights the importance of healthcare professionals being open to talking about these systems with people with T1D using them. We would love to have some people with lived experience of DIY systems. Please contact us if you would be willing to share your experience.  See Episode 3 for Martin's previous episode on Medtronic 780G).

COMING SOON! In Episode 15, Fran & Jaimee are 'Talkin' Tech. This one is aimed at those who may be considering switching from injections to insulin pump therapy. The CGM subsidy in Australia has opened lots of doors. This may lead you to explore your options with Hybrid Closed Loop systems (insulin pump and CGM talking to each other via Bluetooth). We are seeing some fantastic results since these systems have become more widely available. Christmas can also lead to the desire for some more flexibility with diabetes management and the foods we eat (with ideally less ups and downs). So, if you've been wondering what an insulin pump is, the options, what the process is to move to one, or any of the other considerations, listen in and we hope this helps you decide if it may work for you. Please feel free to contact us with any questions too. .educator.fran

Anyone feeling else feeling it??

This seems an appropriate meme to share our latest podcast episode of 'Feeling the Burn - Diabetes Burnout & Distress'.

This is certainly no joke, but the meme may be relatable. Sometimes we don't know if we feel generally low in mood and motivation, or if it's diabetes specific. In our latest episode our guest psychologist helps distinguish the differences.

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being highly energetic and motivated) Where are you at today?

04/12/2022

Episode 14 is now out! That relentless burn T1D brings is very real. Sometimes it becomes too much leading to diabetes distress or complete burnout. We have a special guest psychologist on to help identify when diabetes may be getting on top of you. talks about how this can impact, and includes some strategies to help. We've been wanting to bring this episode out for some time given 25% of those living T1D will experience this. Dr. Adriana has a passion to work in this area. We are very fortunate to have her on. Listen in and please share with loved ones to help them help you 😊

Diabetes is relentless! What is diabetes burnout? What is diabetes distress? How do you distinguish this from depression? When should you seek help? How many people experience this? The stats may surprise you.

As a podcast group we have a variety of experience in the Type 1 space. From living it, to living with someone with it, to supporting children, families and more. We have wanted to do this topic for some time and needed to find someone qualified and passionate about Type 1 Diabetes to bring this episode to you. We found her!

We have a nationally recognised psychologist on as our guest speaker. Dr Adriana Ventura holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology from Monash University, a Graduate Diploma in Psychology and a Doctorate of Psychology (Health) from Deakin University. Dr. Adriana specialises in T1D. We are excited to be able to bring her expertise to you in the next episode! Stay tuned!

Episode 13 is out! We have kept it to the legal & prescribed Roids! It's all about the challenges we can face when prescribed Corticosteroids (for a variety of possible reasons Lara & Fran chat about). The 'Roid Rage' can be very real...but it is not the anabolic steroid rage you might have heard about...it's the insulin resistance rage that can result in the desire to 'rage bolus'... The stubborn highs & amount of extra insulin required can be frustrating & very tricky to manage!

Corticosteroids come in a variety of forms. Listen in as we chat about some considerations if you are prescribed a course of steroids. It can be during pregnancy, it can be for things like asthma, it can be due to injury or pain, or any other forms of inflammation. This is a shorter episode you can listen to in case you ever find yourself needing some more information, which isn't easy to come by on this topic. As always, it's very individual & something your team will need to help with if the time comes.

We would love to hear your experiences, so please do let us know about them too. Hoping this is a helpful episode!

In our next episode Lara & Fran talk about 'Roids'. Not the muscle building, getting jacked up kind of Roids, but the steroids used to manage various conditions, which are prescribed by your GP or Dr.

These drugs have lots of benefits, but they also create a big challenge for managing glucose levels!! Take it from me (Jaimee ☺️). The challenge is very real, & very individual as always. Some tips & considerations to help coming soon!

In Episode 12 we talk Mums, Bubs & B***s. Here's a bit more insight ... There's an expert who's dealt with plenty of babies who have needed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), often due to Neonatal Hypoglycaemia. Listen in for ways to help reduce risk or manage this if it does occur. Kristiana is our special guest. She is a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse who grew a passion to also become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Expressing colostrum could be the difference between baby needing to go to the NICU / Special Care Nursery or not. Listen in for more on this topic. Of course... always check with your own healthcare team.

This one is so much more than breastfeeding!

Will my baby experience neonatal hypoglycaemia?? What even is that?

Should you express colostrum in the lead up to delivery? Is that safe?

Can I breastfeed just like Mum's without T1D? Will my glucose levels impact on my supply?

Will feeding cause me to go low?

Stay tuned for this episode on Mum's, Bubs and B***s with our very special guest, Kristiana, as we talk openly about all this ⬆️.

Kristiana is a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse (she looks after bubs who need very special care) & International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (she's qualified to talk B***s too ☺️).

Arghhhh!!! Who knew Covid-19 could have such an impact on milk supply when breastfeeding??! Noone told me 😔😳😆

Hi everyone 👋 Jaimee here! Apologies for the delay between episodes this time round. It seems timely to get this one going though. We have a guest speaker who is a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse, & Lactation Consultant!

There's lots of myths about Type 1 Diabetes out there and sometimes it's hard to know what to believe. Little did I know that when Nic & I spoke to our guest (Kristiana) for this episode, I'd soon be struggling with milk supply myself. Damn Covid! Anyway, our next episode is coming!

We cover real-life and evidence-based scenarios relating to T1D & breastfeeding! Also, neonatal hypoglycaemia & why babies of mum's with T1D are at increased risk of needing Special Care Nursery.
Kristiana gives some tips on how to reduce these risks.

Does breastfeeding cause hypo's in Mum?? This is a nice follow-on episode from our previous pre-pregnancy planning ep. Stay tuned!! 🤱🧑‍🍼

Episode 11 is NOW LIVE!! Pregnancy is a time in our lives where our health matters! With T1D, there’s lots of planning to do to help ensure both Mum, & bub to be, are as healthy as possible. Whether it’s soon, or in the distant future, building the knowledge around planning is key.

Listen in to Jaimee & our very special guest, Nerine Conway, who is a Registered Nurse of over 25 years, Registered Midwife of over 20 years, & a Credentialled Diabetes Educator who specialises in diabetes & pregnancy.

Jaimee shares some personal experiences after two pregnancies with Type 1. She hits Nerine up with some of the real questions about pregnancy and T1D. These questions aren’t always easy with your team.

We talk a little of everything including tech (CGM & pumps), injections, carb counting (is it needed), supplements, & more! If you’ve got any questions, comments or feedback, please let us know. We sure hope you enjoy.

Oh baby, do we have a super episode coming up for the ladies out there. If you’re thinking babies (or ever might) & have Type 1 Diabetes, this one is especially for you.

Jaimee here everyone. We have sought out a very special guest on this episode to talk about how to prepare that temple of yours to grow your beautiful little human. As a fellow Type 1 who’s just been through my second pregnancy, this topic is near & dear. There’s no better time to treat your body as a temple than before you fall pregnant (& during of course).

We needed to find someone equally as passionate as we are… and we did! Nerine Conway is a Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse & Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE). She has over 25 years experience as a nurse, over 20 years as a midwife, & over 10 years specialising in diabetes & pregnancy as a CDE. She has seen it all. The best part is, she is the most caring, understanding, non-judgemental & passionate lady who is a mother of three herself, & a beautiful wife.

We talk pregnancy planning with Type 1. From glucose targets & HbA1c, to supplements to consider, diabetes tech including pumps & CGM, as well as finger-pricks & injections. Most importantly, we talk about how to maximise the chances of a healthy pregnancy!! In my experience, minimising the guilt of everything Type 1 is a key part of pregnancy. We are so excited to bring this episode to you. Out this week!

Hi peeps - Nic here!

Such exciting news in the world of diabetes. As of July 1st adults are now able to access subsidised glucose sensors 👏👏👏 Total game changer! It’s also a perfect segue to talk about our next episode..

Do you find it’s a battle to get your levels back in range after eating certain types of food?
Are you new to the world of sensors and you’ve noticed patterns in the shape of your glucose curve after meals?
Do you avoid certain foods that send your levels so high you’re too anxious to even go there?
Or maybe you just missed the sound of my voice too much. Any which way, have we got a hot poddy for you that will answer all these questions.

Coming out this Wednesday (3rd July) with Lara & Nic we have…

Stay tuned! Details and access to the subsidy to be released on the 1st of July!

Access to subsidised continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and flash glucose monitoring (Flash GM) products through the NDSS is expanding to include all people with type 1 diabetes.

The rollout of this expansion will start on 1 July 2022. From this date, all people with type 1 diabetes will be able to apply for access to subsidised CGM and Flash GM products through the NDSS.

From 1 July 2022, information will be available on the NDSS website to provide guidance for people with type 1 diabetes and health professionals. The process to apply for access to subsidised products will depend on whether a person has used CGM or Flash GM before (either accessed through the NDSS or directly from a product supplier).

Episode 8 - out tomorrow Wednesday the 16th of March!

General health guidelines suggest that you stick to standard drink recommendations when it comes to drinking alcohol, especially when you have Type 1 Diabetes.
Though this is best practice, we realise that there may be times when you, as an adult, may choose to overindulge - whether it be your 21st or 40th, your best friend's wedding or a winery day out with friends.
In this episode, Fran and Lara talk through the "do's" when it comes to booze and go through some safety mechanisms to try and have in place while drinking alcohol 🍻

We'd love to hear your hot tips on drinking alcohol, please comment below ⬇️

Episode 7 - out Wednesday the 2nd of March

Join Lara and Jaimee as they chat to singer song writer Abby Lee-Harder. Abby is mum to Presley, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 17 months old. Abby talks through their traumatic diagnosis story and how diabetes technology has made a huge positive impact to their day to day lives. Abby and her family live in New Zealand, where there are NO CGM subsidies for people living with diabetes.
With her husband (and fellow R&B/pop sensation) Vince Harder, the pair wrote the beautifully heartfelt song "Overwhelmed", dedicated to their children. Their song and its video has since been used as a strong advocacy piece through Diabetes NZ as a way to push for subsidised access to CGM - a cause that the family (and us here at the podcast) are deeply passionate about.
We hope you enjoy listening to our interview with this amazing supermum 🦸‍♀️

Part of our vision for our podcast was to interview some inspiring people with Type 1 Diabetes, and we were incredibly lucky to have the time to chat with our first guest - diabetes advocate, blogger and absolute legend Renza Scibilia!
Renza was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1998. She is the manager of "Type 1 Diabetes and Communities" at Diabetes Australia , is a strong diabetes advocate, and writes a funny, entertaining and insightful blog called Diabetogenic .
Listen in as we talk about several topics such as why language in diabetes matters, the importance of peer support, and her own technology journey to looping.
We had a blast chatting to Renza - listen in next Wednesday!

Hi T1D followers. Jaimee here! Another ENDIA study visit for my boy doing his part for Type 1 diabetes research. I mention this is our latest podcast ‘back to basics’ as the study looks for environmental causes linked to the autoimmune response causing type 1. This time wasn’t his most pleasant despite the video goggles. There were tears. He also has grown to an age where a stool sample is near impossible for a shy boy (even hours trying at home) with multiple different attempts to make him comfortable. The urine sample is a blast 😆 aside from mum should wear gloves and an apron next time 😂 too much information? 😁 Thanks to the ENDIA nurses Izzy and Kyana for making his visit as fun as possible and for the happy slinky fun as he left. Let’s hope they find some common possible causes for the autoimmune response. type1diabetes ENDIA
