Irene Scouten gave the mighty Dutch a gold medal in the first speedskating event of the Beijing Games, breaking a 20-year-old Olympic record in the women’s 3,000 meters Saturday.Skating in the last of 10 pairs, Schouten turned in a blazing final lap to post the winning time of 3 minutes, 56.93 seconds. That broke the previous Olympic mark of 3:57.70, set by Germany’s Claudia Pechstein at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. In a fitting bookend to the event, Pechstein skated in the opening pair to become the oldest female athlete in Olympic history at 49. The German finished last ― more than 20 seconds behind the winner.Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida, pushing Schouten all the way in the final pair, held on for the silver in 3:58.06. The three-time Olympian is the great-niece of 94-year-old actress Gina Lollobrigida, who was an international star in the 1950s and ’60s.The bronze went to Canada’s Isabelle Weidemann in 3:58.64.Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic, the winner of six Olympic medals including three golds, held the top spot with two pairs to go but failed to make the podium. She wound up fourth in 4:00.34.Defending champion Carlijn Achtereekte of the Netherlands crossed the line in 4:02.21 ― exactly 3 seconds off her gold medal-winning time from four years ago.She finished seventh this time, one spot ahead of the third Dutch skater, Antoinette de Jong.

The Dutch didn’t come close to duplicating their medal sweep in the 3,000 at the 2018 Games, but Schouten made sure it was golden start for the world’s speedskating powerhouse. The opening event of the Olympic speedskating competition was held before a sparse, quiet crowd at the dazzling National Speed Skating Oval, better known as the ”Ice Ribbon” for its distinctive outer facade. To Mia Manganello-Kilburg, an American who finished 19th, it hardly felt like an Olympics.”Not at all. Not at all,” she said. ”It felt like just another training race. You definitely miss that crowd, for sure.”The 12,000-seat Ice Ribbon was the only new venue built at the Olympic Green for this year’s Beijing Games, constructed on the northern edge of the park at the site of the field hockey and archery fields for the 2008 Summer Games.Pechstein became just the second athlete ― and first woman ― to compete in eight Winter Games. Her career includes nine Olympic medals and a two-year doping ban, which she continues to fight in court. She tied Japanese ski jumper Noriaki Kasai for the most Winter Olympics.Pechstein, who turns 50 two days after the end of the Beijing Games, finished in 4:17.16 but still seemed pleased with her performance. The German smiled and waved toward the fans as she received a smattering of applause. The Dutch have dominated at the last two Olympics, though there is expected to be more variety on the medal podium this time around.Japan, Canada, the Russian team, China, the United States and Italy are eager to take a crack at the orange-clad powerhouse, which also was denied having its passionate, flag-waving fans in the stands because of the host country’s COVID-19 restrictions.Four years ago in PyeongChang, the Netherlands claimed seven golds and 16 medals overall ― 10 more than any other country. At the 2014 Sochi Games, they won 23 of the 36 available medals, including eight golds. The Americans haven’t won an individual speedskating medal since 2010, though the World Cup success of Erin Jackson, Brittany Bowe and Joey Mantia provides hopes they’ll break the drought in Beijing. Shaun White celebrates on the podium during the victory ceremony after the final of the men’s snowboard halfpipe at Phoenix Park during the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics in this file photo taken Feb. 14, 2018. The American snowboard legend said he will retire from competition after the Beijing Games, citing the “little signs” from his 35-year-old body. AFP-Yonhap

This really is it for Shaun White. The three-time gold medalist made it clear that not only will the Beijing Games be his last Olympics, they’ll mark his final contest, too.During a reflective, sometimes emotional news conference Saturday, not far from the halfpipe where he’ll take his last competitive ride, the 35-year-old said that, yes, he’ll be hanging ’em up for good after the medal round next week.”In my mind, I’ve decided this will be my last competition,” he said. It’s a decision that’s been building since a soul-sucking training stop in Austria in November. He was dealing with nagging remnants from injuries to his knee … and back … and ankle. He got lost on the mountain with the sun going down. It was one of those rare times when snowboarding didn’t feel fun anymore.”A sad and surreal moment,” he called it. ”But joyous, as well. I kind of reflected on things I’ve done and looked at the sun going down and went, ‘Wow, next time I’m here, I won’t be stressed about learning tricks or worried about some competition thing.”’He is soaking in every moment on this fifth trip to the Olympics, and over his 45-minute session with the media, he fielded an equal number of questions about his past as about what’s to come over the next seven days and beyond.”I have some runs in my head that I’d like to do,” he said. ”And it’s all about visualizing and making that happen the ‘day of.”’Though he refused to take it off the table, those runs probably will not include a triple cork ― the three-flip trick that Ayumu Hirano of Japan has landed twice in competition this season, but has not won with, because he could not link another trick to it.

Back in 2013, White worked on that trick for a time. Then, a different jump ― the double cork 1440 ― became the hottest thing in the halfpipe, so he abandoned the triple to work on that. The rest is history: The 1440 was not enough for him to win in Sochi, but four years ago in PyeongChang, he linked two of them back to back and took his third gold medal.”I’d never done that combination of tricks before and just put it down to win,” White said. ”I mean, it’s a legacy performance.”His legacy goes well beyond that.By making a choice that was unpopular in many circles ― embracing competition, and embracing the Olympics ― he took the entire sport with him and made the whole endeavor more mass-marketable, in large part because every sport needs a star.He also set the bar in a game that treasures progression above all else. In 2006, he was the first man to land back-to-back 1080s. In 2010, it was the Double McTwist 1260 ― ”The Tomahawk,” he calls it; it’s a trick that’s still relevant today.Though others started landing the 1440 and linking two together before him, White did it best, and when the stakes were the highest. But when asked what would suffice as a ”good” Olympics this time around, he wasn’t talking about 1440s or triple corks or gold medals. This has been a rough season for him ― including an ankle injury, a bout with COVID-19, a late unscheduled trip to Switzerland to secure his Olympic spot and, most recently, a training plan that got thrown off schedule during his stay in Colorado in January.”I approach every competition as, you’ve got to be content with your own riding,” White said. ”And as long as you can go out there and put down your best, and lay it out there, then you can walk away, and in your mind, be good with that.”White says he’s toggling between trying to enjoy every moment of the last big contest week of his life and knowing there is work to do when the halfpipe opens for training Sunday.”I’m sort of pinching myself, with how lucky I am to still be here at this age,” he said. But it’s hard not to look back. He told about how when he was a kid, everything he did, day in and day out, was wrapped around snowboarding. ”I don’t know how many kids out there aspire to be a cowboy and then really get to be a cowboy,” he said.Asked what headline he would put on his career, he said he looks back at the kid he was and thinks the perfect line would be: ”We did it!”’ (AP)

Joint Press Corps

Lee focuses on renewable energies; Yoon prioritizes data technology, AIBy Yi Whan-wooThe presidential candidates showed the differences in their strategies for economic growth in their first joint TV debate, Thursday, setting the scene for the lead-up to the March 9 election.During the two-hour televised debate, the two main parties’ rival candidates ― Lee Jae-myung of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) and Yoon Suk-yeol of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) ― threw jabs at each other over what should be viewed as the next major growth engines to help achieve toughened climate goals and accelerate the digital transformation. The two minor party candidates ― Sim Sang-jung of the Justice Party and Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party ― intervened between Lee and Yoon in turn, either downplaying the effectiveness of the proposed policies for inclusive growth embraced by the major candidates or highlighting their own respective strategies as the better ones. The four candidates, nevertheless, were on the same page over the need for sweeping reforms of the real estate market ― possibly what interests the voters most after the Moon Jae-in administration’s devastating failure to stabilize housing prices.DPK candidate Lee Jae-myung was deeply interested in renewable energies when it comes to the country’s next growth engines, saying that they are “at the core of the industries of the future.”In particular, he prioritizes hydrogen energy, which can be mainly divided into green, blue and grey categories, depending on the methods of production, and in a corresponding manner, asked his PPP rival to share his vision on blue hydrogen during the TV debate. Yoon downplayed Lee’s policy interest, saying that renewable energies are “merely a small part of” a broader group of industries for the future. He argued that data technology, artificial intelligence and biotechnology will be “the centerpiece” instead.“Of course, renewable energies are needed to reach the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, but they are not a top priority,” Yoon told Lee.

Ahn did not vociferously counter Lee and Yoon, but rather, brought up his pledges in the fields of science and engineering and addressed what he called the need to nurture “five unrivalled technologies.” The possible five include: displays, secondary batteries, small modular reactors (SMRs), hydrogen energy and biotechnology ― fields in which Korea is ranked in the top tier in terms of global competitiveness.Sim touched on the inclusive growth policy of Lee, arguing that, although he is from a progressive-minded party, Lee too sticks to the “spillover effect,” as embraced by conservatives in the past. Korea’s conservatives use the term, “spillover,” positively to emphasize tax benefits and other support measures for conglomerates and privileged groups, as they argue that wealth accumulated at the top trickles down to smaller companies and the underprivileged.Sim noted that policies based on the “spillover” theory have in actuality turned out by and large to benefit the wealthy, while deepening socioeconomic inequality and marginalization of already vulnerable groups. “It’s extremely regretful that Lee is going backward in his policy,” she said.Vowing to expand housing supplyOn real estate reform, all four candidates cited the need to expand the housing supply, holding the Moon administration accountable for current housing demand outpacing supply.“The incumbent government’s real estate policy has a serious shortcoming, and the large-scale supply of homes remains my No. 1 goal,” Lee told the TV audience.Yoon promised to ease mortgage rules that have been tightened under the Moon government ― initially introduced to curb excessive demand for home-backed loans amid the cheap borrowing rates.“The government has shown no signs of improvement and a change of the administration will be the only way for successful real estate reform,” he said.Sim called for levying a heavier tax on those who own multiple homes.Ahn proposed adopting a measure that allows homeowners to pay for their homes over a period of 45 years. The DPK and PPP candidates collided with each other on issues regarding chaebol reform, with Yoon accusing Lee of “being obsessed with dismantling family-owned conglomerates” in order to root out their irregularities. On the other hand, Lee said that Yoon misunderstands his intention, which is to “dismantle the chaebol system,” which does not produce equitable growth across the entire society.

Fourth-generation “It Girl” Wonyoung continues to attract attention for her visuals. In an online community, internet users also discussed how her face changed when she re-debuted as IVE compared to when the idol debuted as an IZ*ONE member.

Difference Between Wonyoung’s Visual When She’s in IZ*ONE vs. Wonyoung’s Visual When She Re-debuted as IVE

On the 5th, K-pop enthusiasts and internet users created a discussion on how female idol Wonyoung’s visual changed through the years.

The talk started when a netter wrote a post with the title, “Before and after Jang Wonyoung’s makeup style changed,” and emphasized the difference in her visuals. In the post, a comparative picture of makeup changes by Jang Wonyoung also caught the attention of netizens.

In particular, Jang Wonyoung who joined Mnet’s “Produce 48” in 2018 made her way as the “Top Pick” and became the center of IZ*ONE, a girl group produced from the show.

During her IZ*ONE career, K-pop fans loved her bunny-like image, where the “FIESTA” singer still has her chubby cheeks. At that time, the 14-year-old idol was also treated like a “giant baby” for being the tallest member despite being the youngest.

“With colorful makeup, you look more like a princess and a fairy,” “From a baby rabbit to an adult rabbit,” “Both are great,” and “Just Wonyoung is the best.”

However, some expressed that her makeup in IZ*ONE suited her better and said, “Her makeup and visual was more iconic during IZ*ONE.”

On the other hand, Wonyoung who initially rose to popularity in 2018 following her debut as IZ*ONE re-debuted in IVE in 2021 along with co-IZ*ONE member and co-label Ahn Yujin.

Wonyoung also achieved her second “heyday” with IVE as their debut song “ELEVEN” continuous to break records such as snagging the position for the shortest time to have a music show’s first win in girl group’s history, and ranking fourth on the Melon TOP 100 chart and first on the Bugs real-time chart.

Korean figure skater Cha Jun-hwan trains with his coach Brian Orser at a practice rink next to Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing on Feb. 4, in preparation for the Beijing Winter Olympics. Yonhap

Canadian figure skating legend Brian Orser has also been quite successful as a coach, having produced a slew of Olympic and world champions. He knows a potential medalist when he sees one.And he feels his Korean student, Cha Jun-hwan, may have a shot at surprising some people at the Beijing Winter Olympics.Cha is fresh off winning the men’s singles title at the International Skating Union (ISU) Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Estonia on Jan. 23. Though some big names skipped the competition, capturing that title with a new personal best of 273.22 points has firmly put Cha in potential medal contention.Speaking after Cha’s first training session in Beijing on Friday, Orser said winning a medal is “a bit of a long shot” for his Korean pupil but added quickly that it’s “not out of the question.”“I’d love for him to be in the top six. I think that’s realistic,” Orser said after a 35-minute session at a practice rink adjacent to Capital Indoor Stadium. “He was 10th in the worlds last year. His material is better and consistency is better this year. The skating world is taking him seriously. They’re noticing him now.”Two-time defending Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, a long-time student of Orser’s, and three-time world champion Nathan Chen of the United States are expected to contend for gold. Shoma Uno of Japan, the 2018 silver medalist, is also in that discussion. Orser said Cha remains in the shadows of those giants, but the 20-year-old Korean has what it takes to keep improving.“(His improvement) comes from the foundation that he has in skating skills. So solid, so strong,” Orser said. “He is a young man now. It seems to me like he approaches (figure skating) like a job. He loves his job. He’s really good at it. He has a serious approach to his training.”Orser has been working with Cha for six years. Cha used to spend the majority of his time in Toronto to train with the Canadian coach. Over the past couple of years, though, the two have hardly seen each other because of travel restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.Orser admitted missing out on in-person training during Cha’s “crucial years” was difficult for both himself and Cha but gave credit to his student for learning how to be more independent.“He learned all of our stuff every year and he kept building on it,” Orser said. “He stayed loyal. Now we can see all the work we’ve done. He has all the tools in the toolbox and he can pull out things he needs.”Orser had Cha do mostly skating and footwork on Friday, without any jumps. It’s all part of the plan designed to ensure Cha will peak in time for the short program next Tuesday and then the free skate two days later.“I always feel the first practice is one of the most important practices to get a feeling and slowly work your way in,” Orser said. “We have to work our way into greatness. It’s a strategy. We didn’t do any jumps today. But we did beautiful skating. We could see his power and speed. Tomorrow, we’ll start turning it up. Each day, we’ll have a purpose. We have a template that worked (at the Four Continents).”Though Orser has students from different countries, he chose to join Cha in the Korean delegation. He was decked out in his Korean national team gear at Friday’s session. Before Cha, Orser coached Kim Yuna to a historic gold medal in the 2010 women’s singles at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. He has developed and maintained “a good relationship” with the Korea Skating Union along the way.“It’s been six years with Jun-hwan and four years with Yuna, and we had some good times,” Orser said with a smile. “I feel like I am part of the family.” (Yonhap)
