If you’re thinking of upgrading your media station, your instinct might tell you to spend your money on a nice new flat screen TV. But if you’re shopping on a budget, or want a more creative solution for your movie-night needs, consider foregoing a television altogether to get a projector instead.
Projectors come with a host of surprising benefits, and though you might assume a projector would feel a bit too outdated for your entertainment needs, don’t worry. Modern projectors can totally support your Netflix addiction, and a whole lot more. Here are some of the many reasons a projector is a great alternative to a television.

With a television, you either have to mount it to the wall, or you need have a stand that’s the size of a hefty cabinet resting under it. Not only does the latter solution use valuable floor space, it often makes the TV the focus point of an entire living room. A projector is smaller and can be simply placed on a shelf, occupying no floor space at all.
2. You can get more screen for your buck.
If you want a large flat screen TV, you’re typically going to need to spend hundreds of dollars. But with a projector that costs less than $100, you can get play your favorite movies at 120 inches wide. Spend a little more, and the width can grow even wider. You can also get high-quality screen images for less, too, as many projectors play in HD.
3. You can create serious smart home vibes.
A projector might seem like an retro piece of equipment, but with the right setup, you can hook up your Apple TV or Chromecast to your projector, as well as a DVD player and video game console.
4. It’s more portable.
One big difference between a TV and a projector is that most projectors can fit in a backpack. If you don’t feel like hosting movie night at your place, you can bring the projector to a friends house and hook it up there. Or take it outside and project on a blank wall for a backyard block party movie night.
