Q: “How do you avoid being pressured into doing free exposure work”

A:
1 - Help your clients understand the reason they are paying what you are charging. Whether it’s through breaking down your invoice into line items, or sharing your process to give clarity.

2 - Ask for a deposit up front, to avoid being taken advantage of later down the line

Paraphrased Answer by: Lauren Haley Coetzee - Owner of & team lead

One of the biggest takeaways for me, from our very first Sofa Stories event was a nugget shared by Louw he was sharing how, as we get older it will become more challenging to make good friends.

The type that will be beside you when you back is against the wall.

The type that will help you stay balanced as you walk the tight-rope of a risky endeavour.

The type to sit with you in silence when words don’t quite cut it.

And the type to put up with your extraverted tendencies 😅

And so looking back on this event I can’t help but be grateful for all that brought this into being ✨

In our final instalment of our Jack Studio trilogy series, we round out our time with the studio by chatting to Dylan da Silva and Claudia Ferreira, the UI and system design specialists. We explore how they work together and compliment each others skillset, similarly to Claire and Paul. One thing we’ve definitely learnt form these episodes is how highly functioning small design studio teams can be when everyone is on the same page, has seamless team efforts on the same projects, and the organisational structure has been ironed out. We also touched briefly on AI in design, and how it could possibly be used as a tool and starting block instead of simply replacing designers, before circling back to explore some of Dylan and Claudia’s past projects within the Studio.

24/07/2023

Our second episode in our Jack Studio trilogy series is here, and what a conversation we had! Following on from our previous episode with Founder and CEO Sabeeha Banubhai, we now get to chat with Paul Loots and Claire Keet, who both play vital roles in the studio regarding branding, product and operations. We explored the details of the Studio’s project management and workflow, even how they work towards only taking on clients and projects they know align with their vision. We also talk about how the studio aims to grow their business, not by simply taking on more clients, but by diving deeper into the projects they take on a providing a truly value-focussed well thought-out end product. Watch until the end as Paul and Claire each walk us through one of their favourites projects and some of the challenges involved.

Not sure if I love or hate the high sense of speed and enthusiasm we tend to start a new year with, but here we are 🤷🏻‍♀️ You feeling it too? Need some down time where you still productive? Checkout the batch of mini episodes we released this week.

This batch of 4 mini episode's feature speakers from UX Craft South Africa day 2 of conference that took place in November. And boy the speakers chose some interesting topics. Find it here:https://linktr.ee/editundo

1️⃣ Alexander Oloo shares his take on design leadership in a Post-covid world and why it's important to see our colleagues and employee's as humans beyond their day job.💛 If you listening to this one and feeling a bit confused, it's probably because you'll soon realise Alexander Oloo and our boy Alfi Oloo are brothers, and yes, sound very much the same 😂

2️⃣ Calling all design teams. We love our design systems, but we absolutely hate when they fail us💔. Schalk Venter, a 'connoisseur' on this topic, shares his experience on why design systems fail. He also shares a bit more on being a speaker, and how your topic evolves with the feedback you receive. 🥂

3️⃣ We have a special place for Ladies That UX | Cape Town. 👯‍♀️ One of volunteers and strategists, and designer at Discovery Limited, Aalia Coovadia shares her approach and love of research and a bit about this teeth grinding topic that is dental visits. If only all dentists could hear this talk. 😬

4️⃣ New year, new me. Optimism is key! Steyn Viljoen, lead product designer at famous crypto-app Luno, shares why he believes an attitude of optimism is key to successful problem solving. He also gives us some insight into the fairly new and growing space of tech.

Right. I think that's in for this week. Have a lekker one.

We know, you've missed us 😉 As some of you might remember, our co-host Alfi Oloo went on stage at the UX South Africa conference in November. Apart from sharing his own knowledge, he had quick chats with each speaker to hear a little bit more about their topic.

Over the next 3 weeks, we'll release a mini collection of 8 episodes, each with one of the speakers from the November conference. Today, you can find 2 of them on your Podcast platform. Check it out here: https://linktr.ee/editundo

Day 1 featured UX female duo Inez Patel and Danielle Goosen talking Accessibility design. For their talk at the conference, Inez and Danielle invited members of the Blind SA organisation to participate in the workshop and in live user testing. In their mini conversations you can hear a bit more about their entry into industry, and their experience of the conference.

Feeling a bit of FOMO now that you're hearing about UX Craft South Africa? Well don't fret, they are hosting 2 more in 2023, and finally (because it's overdue) one will be in Cape Town.

New Episode!🔥 Leading up to the UX Craft South Africa conference in a week with our very own Alfi Oloo speaking at the event, we had a chat to the event organiser and founder himself, Ighsaan Robinson. Although he is a Product manager, he is a true ambassador of human centered design and the community in South Africa.

Things i love from this episode
✅ UX has many names and terms, but all of which focuses on solving human related problems
✅ How non designers can use UX methodologies to inform successful product designs
✅ Observing that UX practitioners are both process thinkers and emotion curators
✅ Moving from "users" to "humans"

New episode!🔥 Many of the artists we have chatted to on the pod come from a background informed and empowered by their creative education. However, in this episode we speak to artist Anthony Muisyo, born and raised in Nairobi Kenya. He has absolutely no formal training in any art or design, and used his surroundings to inspire his creative expression.

He's current medium is digital collage, as well as some interesting interactive digital components. Each piece is also accompanied by a small write up.

Things we loved from this episode:
✅ Learning that creativity is inherit in all of us
✅ How powerful observation is, and how it's used to create more inclusive art pieces
✅ Not all artistic pieces have a 'deeper' or intended meaning. Sometimes, it's just fun.
✅ Allowing experimentation in our process
