SPJ DocuFest 2021

"Filipinos nowadays are afraid of taking on risks and tend to refuse important matters to end this global pandemic. The scare of severe vaccine effects, the proliferation of months and fake news about vaccines, and the lack of trust Filipinos have in their own government are some of the factors driving this reluctance that is on the minds of people around the country."

"Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, hundreds of cities and barangays across the nation have experienced the fear and threat of life under the virus. However, two of Malolos' barangays are living proof that a place can be free of COVID-19 through isolation — literally."

"Inspired by the community pantry of Maginhawa Street, the Discipler Christian Church located in Dakila, Malolos set up a community pantry outside their church to celebrate their 21st Anniversary Collection. They started last April and continued with neighboring barangay such as Sumapang Matanda. They have one motto — give to those who are in need."

"The erstwhile circumstances have brought us to the changes we are living in now. With the global pandemic, there are many things that we are no longer accustomed to. Things such as travel, school, and the traditional work set-up have disappeared and been replaced with major precautionary and safety measures. But not everything is doom and gloom — the bright summer breeze is still wafting from a bakery in the City of Malolos even in the midst of the new normal. "

"With the removal of Philippine History as a dedicated subject from the high school curriculum in 2012, many Filipinos have been robbed of the chance to learn more about the nation’s past in a collaborative learning environment with their peers. While some may say that this was a much-needed change, it is evident that its displacement has done more harm than good with the current generation drifting away from their roots."

"When the K to 12 program was implemented, Philippine History was removed as a subject in high school. This is good for two main reasons: it acknowledges that the nation has outgrown the need for forced nationalism and it allows for more time to focus on more important matters. In recent years, it has become exceedingly clear that in order to succeed in the world, the nation must find a way to leave behind its antiquated customs and welcome modernity in all its glory."

"Although history may seem like a distant memory, it is actually closer to us than it has ever been with the advent of the internet. We can search for anything in seconds, putting the whole world at our fingertips. In spite of this, however, the danger of fake news and historical distortion is quickly overshadowing the truth."

Even in the midst of this dark time, however, there is still a light that continues to make our lives brighter — our communities working hand in hand to make the most of this predicament."

With the rise of social media over the past decade, fake news has managed to push its way into the mainstream, mixing fact with fiction and kicking off an era where one cannot immediately trust what they read.
Along with the general lies and fearmongering making their way across the internet, there is also a more insidious form of misinformation spreading throughout the public — historical distortion. While historical revisionism and historical distortion have often been confused with the terms constantly switching places, historical distortion is the more deceptive one of the pair.
Let's learn more about the two of them today! By keeping a vigilant eye on our history, we will also be keeping watch over the sanctity of journalism itself as it safeguards the truth and dispels all falsehoods.

RECAP: After the K-12 curriculum was implemented in 2012, Philippine History was removed as a subject at the junior high school level. While it used to be taught in the first year of high school in the 2002 Basic Education Curriculum, the current K to 12 Basic Education Program has seen it being shifted to elementary school, only making a return in the first year of college.
The High School Philippine History Movement hopes to reintroduce Philippine History at the secondary level in order to facilitate a sense of nationalism among young Filipinos and develop their critical thinking skills through the study of history. It is their ardent hope that it will be given the time and attention they feel it deserves.
