Sitting of 14 November 2023, the clock ticking 12:34 - the Speaker of the House of the Mauritian Assembly ascertains that First Member for Constituency No 3 shall have a fraudulent Point of Order and will not allow it.

Fine, his ruling. Only issue with it is that no one knows what the Point of Order was, unless of course said member had notified him of same before. Or he has some super powers we are unaware of. And dare not tell me "past reputation", that is stereotyping/discrimination.

The Diwali Public Holiday in Mauritius is explicitly not confined to a singular community or religion. We celebrate it as the Festival of Lights, characterised by a spirit of communal sharing through various confections and a celebration of community living.

Hence, it is disheartening and challenging to witness the Prime Minister's communication, which a substantial portion of the population may find perplexing (Hindi, really?). Designating Diwali as exclusively a Hindu festival could be considered precarious, suggesting a regressive shift, particularly accentuated this year. The hope is that this is a mishap rather than the true intent. Let us not emulate other countries that have designated Diwali as solely a Hindu festival, risking the loss of our identity. Instead, let us uphold its status as a national festival, working collaboratively to ensure that we continue to embrace Diwali and Christmas as our inclusive end-of-year festivities.

The press and Western media's approach to the Palestine-Israel conflict has, at times, exhibited a notable degree of hypocrisy and inconsistency. While journalism should ideally be founded on principles of neutrality and objectivity, it is essential to acknowledge that media outlets and narratives can be influenced by various factors, including political, economic, and cultural considerations.

One significant point of contention is the portrayal of the conflict itself. Western media often frames the issue as a 'complex' or 'deep-rooted' conflict, but at times, this complexity is used as a means to avoid addressing the fundamental human rights violations experienced by Palestinians. By presenting it as a 'both sides' issue, there can be a failure to recognize the stark power imbalances, such as the vast disparity in military capabilities between Israel and Palestine.

Furthermore, the use of terminology can sometimes be biased. Terms like 'clashes' or 'conflict' can mask the fact that Palestinians, especially in the Gaza Strip, often face disproportionate military force, resulting in a high number of civilian casualties. The term 'occupation' is often replaced with 'dispute' or 'territorial conflict,' which can downplay the reality of Palestinian territories under Israeli control for decades.

Western media's focus on the actions of Palestinian armed groups while downplaying the underlying causes of the conflict is another source of criticism. The socio-political context of the occupied territories, including issues like settlements, displacement, and access to basic services, often receive less attention.

Moreover, the portrayal of Palestinians and Israelis can be lopsided. Palestinians are frequently depicted in situations of violence or distress, while Israelis may be shown in a more normalized, everyday context. This can inadvertently create a skewed image of who is suffering and who is perpetrating violence.

The media is expected to be educating and informing the public. While everyone claims to be independent in this country, we all know that each has their own biases. But with each passing day lately, what we also know is that each of these media houses have limited awareness and sensitivity to talk about issues. If anyone dared think that the Supreme Court being progressive was indicative of the progress we've made, the article here shows that it is a constant fight between those who want to move and those who are caged.

The Supreme Court of Mauritius on 4th October 2023 gave an interesting judgment that is likely going to cause much reaction.
A two-judge bench decriminalised consensual s*x between two adults irrespective of their gender.

S*x is not limited to the possibility of procreation but to consent and choice.

🌍✉️☕️ In the heart of Havershire, where rolling hills met quaint coffeehouses, a tale of exploration and connection unfolded. Mr. Mochaccino ☕️ and Miss Dodina 📚, two souls bound by their love for adventure, news, and global happenings, found themselves at the center of an extraordinary story.

🌟 Just like a scene from an Austen novel, their story dared to defy convention. In a time when society whispered disapproval, these kindred spirits embraced their shared passion for knowledge and curiosity about the world.

🗺️🌿 Dreaming of grand adventures to far-off lands, they let their imaginations roam freely. Gossip and disapproval couldn't extinguish their flame, for their hearts beat to the rhythm of exploration and shared dreams.

💕 As their discussions deepened, so did their affection. In the grand tradition of Austen, their love story blossomed, a testament to the power of common interests and intellectual connection. Together, they faced societal expectations with grace and courage.

👫💞 In the end, Mr. Mochaccino and Miss Dodina stood as a reminder that true companionship and love could conquer all, even in the face of society's conventions.

Anil Kapoor, the iconic Bollywood actor, has secured a significant legal victory in India. He successfully protected his image and personality rights from AI misuse. This landmark ruling could pave the way for others in the country to safeguard their public persona from unauthorized use.

Kapoor filed a lawsuit against a film producer for using his personal attributes without consent, including in deepfakes and morphed content. The court issued an interim order preventing such usage, marking a crucial step in protecting public figures' rights in India amid AI's potential for misuse.

Image and personality rights are vital for the dignity, reputation, privacy, and autonomy of individuals, particularly celebrities with a valuable yet vulnerable public persona. These rights enable them to dictate how they are presented in the public domain and prevent unauthorised or deceptive usage of their persona, which could harm their image or distort their beliefs and values.

Anil Kapoor's case represents a historic ruling in safeguarding his image and personality rights from AI misuse. It also serves as a call to action to establish a legal framework that can effectively oversee AI and protect image and personality rights in India.

Kapoor's actions set a strong example emphasizing the need to defend one's image and personality rights in the face of AI threats.

Taking a moment to weigh in on a recent controversial incident that's divided opinions in our community.

The person in question is a powerhouse in Mauritian media, known for their sensational style of reporting.

Let's not dwell on personal preferences but focus on what's occurred. An employer held a disciplinary committee, resulting in the employee's termination – a process that followed established guidelines. The employee is now challenging this decision legally.

As we reflect on this case, consider the intent, past actions, and potential consequences. The error seems to have happened during a testing transmission, and its political implications are hard to ignore.

Does this situation call for stricter online media rules? Freedom of expression is crucial, but accountability matters too.

Does this case call for more stringent regulations on online media reporting? To those pondering this, I ask: what's amiss with appreciating that a democratic state should foster freedom, and that the expansiveness of the internet surpasses that of traditional media? This is precisely why many use social media platforms to cultivate their audience.

While it's unfortunate to see someone lose their job, it reminds us that both individuals and institutions will be held accountable sooner or later.

If a person completely dissociates themselves from history, they might disconnect from their cultural, social, and historical context. This could lead to a lack of understanding about their own identity, the world around them, and the events that have shaped it. History plays a significant role in shaping individual and collective perspectives, so disconnecting from it could result in a limited worldview. Of course there is adaptation but to say that looking at history is not okay yet shouting the religious card is dangerous. This man, on Friday last, painted himself as an individual who will have no boundaries nor lessons learnt from past politicians.

This was supposed to be a communication exercise by the ASP, sanctioned by the Commissioner of Police. Now days later to read about the situation from Murvind Beetun's Facebook post is saddening.

This is a what could have been exercise now.

Content to be examined later. How it was conducted is disturbing.

1. How and why were so many officers allowed inside the premises of the media outlet? Even if they are police officers, MB had the right to feel safe and protected while on his employment location. Did the police force themselves in or where they welcomed? At any time were they asked to leave but refused?

2. Since the CP didn't refute sending these two legal counsels, and while they claim to be pro bono, it is still a public institution and it is only right for him, or his interposé, to shed a little light on the role they were expected to have. Or at least the conditions under which this interview was authorised.

3. With CCTV footage available and faces easily identified, will the thought of an enquiry be brought up to figure out why they were camping in a radio station, and at least whether they were on duty officers or not?

4. It is a shame that in 2023, for whatever reason, a journalist has to conduct an interview in conditions where he is intimidated. At times in the name of sub judicial matters, at times in the name of security. Swords around the neck of interviewers cannot be tolerated.

5. This ain't a political or abuse of police powers. It is about whether an employee failed to have a safe and convenient environment at his workplace.
A minister said few days ago, answering a PNQ, it is the job of a caring government to ensure civil servants have the comfort of ACs. This is even more basic. Security. What will be done?

Exclusively no exclusivity

What was the purpose of three different media publishing the same audio tape, in the name of exclusivity, at three different times of the day last Friday?

It can be argued that the aim was to inform.

However, that could be done without shrouding it in sensationalism, defined as the presentation of stories in a way that is intended to arouse public interest or excitement. "But this was investigative journalism"?

The "promo" edit was sensational.
The inability to collaborate to produce a joint article/show where all heads are concerned with informing the public demonstrates a battle of business, views, not duty to inform.
The inclusion of title, name, accreditation of these police officers in the publication.

Was that necessary?
Could the audio be broadcasted without their names?
Could the information published harm these people as members of society?
Could this amount to an initiation of a media trial (by definition, coverage of any issue that has an impact on an individual's reputation by creating a widespread perception of guilt or innocence before, or after, a verdict in a court of law)?

It's one thing to highlight possible corruption within the police force, it's quite another to 'name and shame' - what the British consider to be a serious offence.

This could have been a huge project, but the desire to tag the highest bid and the best packaging made it one of the many issues of the week

09/06/2023

Let me get this right. Three media houses had the same exclusive content which they decided to share on the same, and they all claimed only they know what it was about.
Investigate journalism (?)

Element 175 of the Budget 2023/24 talks about revitalising, preserving and promoting the city of Port Louis. Element 175(d) mentioins the pulling down of Anquetil Building to make place for an Anquetil Park.
Refurbishment of Emmanuel Anquetil Building has provisions made from budget year 2022/23 to 2025/26. This year, approximately 20M, next year 40M, 2024 33M and 2025 6M.
So far, what Hurrerram said to the house holds. This is not a project that will be completed overnight, nor does the government have any reason to not invest in ensuring that public servants wokring there do not have basic facilities such as decent air conditioning.
Where this whole answer loses clarity and as a simple citizen of the Republic who is not in government nor has access to information which may help to understand the way the government works, or the vision of the Cabinet, is when Hurreeram gets defensive about the expenditure.
Duval claims that Rey Lenferna has been handed a contract of around 100M to work in the building - statement which the minister does not deny but goes on the motherly nature of the government. Very emotional but ineffective.
It may be that Duval was not good enough in asking the right question or phrased it wrong. I do not know but. How does it make sense, let us think as primary students, to spend over 100M in restructure of a building we know is going to be pulled down?
Has there been a study to show that this is the best way out, instead of renting another building, temporarily, on a yearly basis?
This is not about how "we" or "they" work. This is asking that the tax payers money used is held accountable for.
Is a garden the best solution in that spot? Has any study been done to show that a Park is the demand in that location?
Change is hard, Hurreeram said it. It, therefore, follows that change should be explained slowly, patiently and with serenity. Being presumptuous is not going to help. The same reply could have had a different impact if the approach was different.

The concern was that the speech of a member was using animal analogies.

My love for George Orwell's Animal Farm was wounded by this interpretation. We have some beautiful literature to read: H***e de Balzac's short story, Passion in the Desert, Langdon Smith's poem, Evolution, Jean de La Fontaine Fables

Humans use metaphoe to explore a relationship with nature. Our ability to make and understand metaphore evolve with our ability to create and understand language. Animal metaphors begin with the premise that humans are animals, primates that share physical, behavioural and neural machinery with other primate species. That we can use, understand metaphors make humans the race with brains. Paradoxically, the evolved use of animal metaphors allows humans to conceptualise ourselves as non-animals.

There are courses given at reputed universities to deal with this concept. It is okay to not understand it but it is less okay to ban its use. This approach of banning or cancelling is why once Animal Farm was prohibited in certain countries. Of course each animal was an analogy, but if you give the book to a child who has no clue of the Russian Revolution, it becomes a tale of four paws fighting two feet to eventually adopting a two paws lifestyle. It is about how power corrupts. How greed takes over once you get the taste of. How you forget sharing once you enjoy your position. It is society represented through society, Russian or not.

Putting a literature touch to any speech of our politicians make them more bearable and nuanced. At times even more than what they intended it to be. Forbidding such metaphors is similar to Ligue 1 forbidding Neymar from doing rainbowflicks because the other player has no defense to it and may feel bad.

I think I cracked it. He has issues with listening to two sides, and watching both sides of the House at the same time. He is better with those at the right of the Chamber than those at the left because he does not hear what those sitting to his left say, he does not see.
During the sitting of the 22nd May 2023, for example, he repeated his new rule: apologise if he does not agree with point of orders - no, please do not. Next we shall have judges and magisrates asking barristers to apologise if their points in law do not make it. Please be more crisp, clear and eloquent in which point of order you are making. Cite the section of the Standing Order when need be, but do not apologise if it is rejected.
However, the main observation. The Chair said, with reason, that it is the one who decides. Then, the Minister answering went on to preach moral values. Several times. He might have been Minister of Education in the past but I do not think he wants to leave his current position in cabinet to be the new Speaker of the House - though he is very capable of filling in those shoes. Therefore, it might be right to expect that he does not preach about procedures of the House or on what the population will judge.
Those are but lame techniques to waste time of the Chambers and to present himself in good mannerism but with no content.
One day, in the near future, hope is that the focus stays on what is said rather than how it is said. You can be the best elocutor but have no substance in what you eloquently said.

Read on my timeline remarks that the DPP cannot be the organ of society deciding who to prosecute.

Just saying, DPP stands for Director of Public Prosecutions. ODPP is meant to be responsible for and exercise control over the conduct of prosecutions in criminal jurisdiction 👀

23/05/2023

Did he just say that the Chair is not concerned with matters of national or international interests? And that one should learn from Westminster?

Someone please send him the footage of Brexit debates in the House of Commons. He needs to watch and learn.

One cannot dare to invent Parliament, we got to respect what the British left as legacy. We can agree on that.

Everyone will appreciate the gusto with which Pravind Jugnauth explained the nature and pharmacological composition of the products seized from Navin Ramgoolam's house in early February 2015. Just as everyone will note the Prime Minister's somewhat unhealthy relish in reading the carefully prepared note in French, in order to better describe and convey the use of these products.

In the wake of this, others rushed to the defence of the Labour Party leader and his moral compass. Going, in some cases, so far as to suggest that Ramgoolam was, is morality better. Or that they too consumed the same tablets because it is advised for such and such reason.

The Mauritian National Assembly has in Hansed some vile low blows preserved for posterity, something many politicians forget or wished we all had amnesia when it is convenient to their purpose.

Any question with respect to those tablets is usually in bad taste and to settle some political scores. What was saddening was to see individuals who usually claim and assert they are for a different political strategy engage in such useless and futile debate.

1. What was the aim of the question?
2. How did Shakeel Mohamed end up being the advocate for Navin Ramgoolam in our Parliament?

16/05/2023

And now one has to apologise for "Fraudulent Point of Order" 😂😂

Week in/week out. This man is turning the Chambers into shambles.
To be fair, not on content but on form, it was not a bad exchange between Leader of Opposition and Minister of Education. The tone was decent. Until someone found it decent and acceptable to start cooing.
The role of the Speaker at that point was to joke and ease things up but no. He cannot ever do that.
Cooing and screeching.

25/04/2023

"Maybe you are failing in your duties as Leader of Opposition, take care of that"
🤌🏽 the politically appointed dude finds it appropriate to make remarks about a democratically elected member - because he feels he is above God or equal to God therein

Al Aqsa Mosque: Why is it so special in Islam?

Israeli troops have attacked Al Aqsa, the third holiest site for Muslims, during several Ramadans. Here is what makes the place so significant within the Islamic faith.

09/04/2023

17th of Ramaḍān marks the date of the Battle of Badr.

It was the first time Allāh allowed the Muslims to defend themselves against the persecutors of Makkah

“Indeed, Allāh made you victorious at Badr when you were vastly outnumbered. So be mindful of Allāh, perhaps you will be grateful.“ [Sūrah Āl ʿImrān, Verse 123]

Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati, head of Dasna Devi temple in Uttar Pradesh, is a notorious human being who openly calls for violence against Muslims. At an event named Hindu Jagruti Samelan (Awakening the Kshatriya) organised by Nyay Manch Trust in Noida, recently, he delivered yet another hate speech, calling to eradicate Islam from the planet. He dreams of "invading" Makkah.

My initial feeling to this speech was hurt. Not only does India, one of the Top 5 houses for Muslims in the world, provide such a platform but this will be termed as freedom of speech and not hate speech.

Islam breeds peace. It brings a certain calmness and sukoon. I try my best to spread knowledge of it, in my own style. I sometimes feel when I am faced with a group of non-believers that my faith almost wavers sometimes. Secularism is still my goal. Real tolerance is the aim. Not an intolerant, pluralist, hypocritical setup.

Standing alone with your beliefs in a group who don’t understand you can be quite intimidating. I always have a very strange feeling when talking about God and Ramadan to non-believers. In my heart I know I am speaking the truth but to them it is far fetched nonsense and you can’t help but feel a little ridiculous. For example, explaining that fasting is not depriving your body of energy. That it is not torture. That I am not craving for food every hour of the day. That I am not weaker. That I am not straining my body so much that I am on the verge of collapsing. This is where Allah asks us to be firm and to stand firm in Faith.

Muhammad said: A believer is firmer in religion than a tall mountain. A mountain may shrink [because of erosion] but no-one can reduce the faith of a believer. That is because he is possessive of his faith and will not give a part of it to anyone. (Bihār al-Anwār, v 64, p 299).

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah said, “A time of patience will come to people in which adhering to one’s religion is like grasping a hot coal.” (Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2260)

We live in a society where we are around temptations, we are exposed to a culture that creates confusion and doubt and ultimately have caused Islam as a religion to become something strange. In this day and age we need to stay steadfast through the corruption and the doubts and confusion.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Islam began as something strange and will go back to being strange, so glad tidings to the strangers.’”

As believers we have the upper hand although it may not feel like it. Allah loves the steadfast.

“O ye who believe, be steadfast and strive to excel in steadfastness” (3.201).

On a day when the Battle of Badr is being remember, when 313 fought and won against 3000, hope is that as a people we are able to still make dua for those who are wrong to see reason, and ask that the truth always win.

That religion cannot preach violence. That God asks you to be kind, to be respectful for you have to eventually answer to Him for your acts as well as intentions.

One world. One game. That's what football should stand for. That is what sports stand for.

It is quite amusing that Ramadan is viewed as a punishment where humans are made to starve, hurt themselves, deprived of food and reduced in efficiency. Not at all. It might look so from afar but to most of us who are observing it, it is a peaceful month, with calmness and a strange sukoon which we feel blessed to have. It is not a punishment.

There are rules though. On the time to start and break the fast, for example. You cannot start or break at your convenience. So it made me happy that for the third year in a row, the Premier League made it clear that iftar will be observed during matches where there will be players fasting. It will not cost much to anyone. Few seconds, lesser than a VAR check most likely.

Cut to Ligue 1, and the Fédération Française de Football sending that email to referees. So unnecessary and devoid of pragmatism. What will be cost any of you to walk around, drink a sip while few are breaking their fast? Nothing. What happens to secularism? Tolerance? Inclusiveness? Big words but in terms of actions, France has been disappointing. It has shown an image of a country that is finding it hard to distinguish between hardliners and casual believers.

Should this be talked about? Absolutely!
Should UEFA jump in here? Yes. Will it? No. Convenience oblige.

This is discrimination at work. We forget too often that these men and women playing football are employees. They deserve to be treated as such, irrespective of the paycheck. More love and respect to the British and their flexibility though. Reminder as to why they are admired and looked up to by so many nations (even their colonies). Little steps matter.
