Shirley Chisholm made history in 1972 when she became the first African American woman to run for President of the United States. Chisholm’s presidential campaign was born out of frustration with the political system and a desire to see change. Chisholm campaign faced many challenges, including lack of media attention.

To a large extent, the media portrayed Chisholm as a candidate for the Blacks and women. The repeated headlines and articles describing her as minority candidate in a reputable news outlet like the New York Times focused on emphasizing the popular attitude but also at the expense of reporting her stance other important national issues. This representation by the mass media also marginalized Chisholm’s voter base, bearing in mind that the manner in which the media presents content to its audience (e.g., word choice, labels, categories, etc.) significantly influences conclusions.
We see the same coverage of Black and Brown Women in todays media portrayal- from 1972-2023

The Folding Chair is committed to telling the untold stories of Black and Brown Women in politics and civic engagement- Welcome to the Folding Chair.
