CELEBRATING PRIDE MONTH WITH ACCEPTANCE

The month of June is considered to be the PRIDE MONTH and it means the month for our brothers and sisters who are Le****ns, G**s, Bisexuals, Transgender/Transexuals, and Queering (Questioning) (LGBTQ). It’s their month to show up their pride, to call out their rights and to seek equality and acceptance from the community. This years’ celebration was inspired by the theme “SULONG VAKLASH! Sama-samang Pag-Aklas ang Ating Lunas” was celebrated in various ways through virtual seminars and other activities and with the legendary Pride March which has been going on yearly for 24 years at the Marikina Sports Center where thousands of G**s in different orientations come together to celebrate and to express their want for equality.

This PRIDE Month started way back in June 28, 1969 a year when that fateful Stonewall Riots or Stonewall Uprising happened. Stonewall Inn is a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City which was raided by the New York Police. This riot has served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the US and around the world. In the Philippines it has started in the year 1994 and it has been celebrated every year since then.

Ever since I was hooked by Vloggers Faj Cuyugan and Trisha Garcia on You Tube, I came to expand my understanding about gender definition, gender role and gender equality. They are Filipino bi sexual couple who works as International Flight Attendants. Their relationship has lasted for seven years and they got married last year in Las Vegas where same-sex marriage is legalized. Now they call themselves the wife and wife of each other. They are so lucky to have been accepted by both family and friends never minding all criticisms they receive. Yes, I am straight but I can’t help but admire the kind of unusual love they have which though not perfect, it’s getting stronger and stronger through the years. From their vlogs they play, they share their thoughts and experiences and they do anything and everything together. I even discovered that there are also bi-couples like them, who are brave enough to come-out and even inspire others.

True enough God created only two sexes man and woman to procreate. But for me it’s more than pro creation that is important. It is a matter of spreading love regardless of who you are and what you believe in. We may have two sexes but we have discovered there are more genders that have emerged through the years hence, we have now the LGBTQ. Good thing our society is open minded to accept such growing genders, though some of us specially the conservative ones would really find it critical to accept a man trapped in a heart and body of a woman or a woman trapped in a heart and body of a man, saving some issues on morality and religion.

Now the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression also known as the SOGIE Bill is already pending in the Congress. It is intended to prevent various economic and public accommodation-related acts of discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. The bill supports to define and protect the rights of people who have a different gender orientation. What is emphasize is to protect them from discrimination, to accord them fair treatment and to give them equal opportunities. I hope in due time this will come into law in support to our LGBT brothers and sisters.

I believe all of us are created equal by God regardless of our beliefs and preferences. So even if we are thinking straight and feeling straight, we should support and accept people who cannot chose to be straight.

MY COVID VACCINE STORY

Ever since COVID -19 has bombed the whole world, me like any other individual has been insanely affected thinking what will happen if my or any member of my family will get affected. We have been living a not so normal life called the new normal and we had been isolating ourselves from the world. We are prevented from doing things freely. Yet, up to this moment, COVID is still roaming around remaining to be unseen and hitting many people. It spreads like fire affecting any body from the young and old the rich and poor alike.

I was one of those who are dying to be vaccinated. I even covered the first vaccination roll out to our medical front liners in the different hospitals in the city. Our doctors and nurses and other medical workers were considered on the priority list being at the firsthand risk. When it was time for the Senior Citizens, I had my mother lined up for the vaccine until she completed her second dose. The vaccine didn’t give her reactions except for some manageable pains on the area injected.

My much-awaited time has come when last May, the vaccine rollout proceeded to A3 or to persons with co morbidities and persons with disabilities (PWDs). I had been enduring diabetes for the last five years. It runs in the blood and it my gains too as a heavy eater (hehe). I had been maintaining three kinds of medicines and is regularly on a medical check up with my internist. Upon showing my medical records and my maintenance prescription, I had my 1st jab last May 13, 2021. If I am not mistaken, I was the last one among the comorbids to avail of the Sinovac Vaccine.

I appreciated the system followed by the Vaccine Operation Center (VOC). Marshalls were there to guide you on a step-by-step procedure. After taking my vital signs I was examined by a doctor in charged and we talked on my health conditions. My blood pressure was 140/100. Quite on the boundary because of heat maybe some stress as I have to walk from the covered court to the Executive Function Hall. After my vaccine which in a way gave me a slight pain that I have to endure, I was guided to the post vaccination area to rest. After 30 minutes or so, my blood pressure was taken and it quite alarmed me because it has reached 180/100. I was made to rest again another 15 minutes. My BP dropped to 170/100 still it is high. I was advised to be home immediately to take a rest. I was enduring the same for days that I had to submit for a check-up. I was given maintenance meds now to add to the list of my daily maintenance.

I had my 2nd dose scheduled last June 10. Before that I was religiously taking my medicines and was into monitoring my diet, exercise and rest. I had my follow-up check-up and my laboratories were normal. Before and after my shot, my blood pressures were normal. With only a little pain in my vaccinated area, I felt fine and even had some errands.

Now that I have completed by 2 dose vaccines, I feel protected but totally not. For as long as we have people around me who are not yet vaccinated, I can still get infected but at least it will not be that severe nor fatal. We are still vaccinating the A2 and A3 categories and the vaccine operations cannot move on to the A4 category unless we get to exhaust the number of Senior Citizens needed to be vaccinated. I hope our grannys would think of submitting themselves for vaccine. This is this for their own good as they are more prone in for infection. Our LGU is truly campaigning in every barangay to have our citizens vaccinated especially the Senior Citizens.

After the A3 category (with comorbidities and with disabilities) the next will be the A4 or the so-called essential workers. They comprise the following sectors; government employees, vendors, drivers, media, among others to include those who are always in contact with a number of people.

COVID is real and if we notice the spread of the virus is still surging moreso with the mutations. Please, please let us subject ourselves to the vaccine. Let us cooperate in achieving what we call herd immunity so we can go back to the normal life we use to have.
