Maritzburg bring in five new players

Tue 25 Jan, 07:53

Maritzburg United have confirmed the arrival of five new signings as they look to bolster their squad for the second half of the DStv Premiership season and move away from the relegation mix.
Tawanda Macheke, Genino Palace, Lucky Baloyi, Steven Pereira and Friday Samu all join the club in the January transfer window.
Zimbabwean forward Macheke was previously with Black Rhinos in his homeland, and he is joined by another striker in Zambian Samu, who was played for Green Buffaloes.
South African attacking midfielder Palace has spent some time in Portugal and was last with Académica De Coimbra, while Cape Verde international right-back Pereira was in the same country at UD Oliveirense, but has also played in the Netherlands and Bulgaria.
Finally, former Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder Baloyi will add some steel to the centre of the park.
"I am so excited to have joined Maritzburg United and everyone at the club have been so welcoming and supportive towards me ever since I arrived," Baloyi says.
"I'll do my best to contribute to the team and help us achieve our goals for the remainder of the season. I am looking forward to using this opportunity to help the club in any possible way. It feels great to be here."
The quintet will be line to make their debuts when Maritzburg host SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup early next month.

Lukhubeni leaves Sekhukhune after six months

Wed 26 Jan, 10:40

Right-back Nicholus Lukhubeni has confirmed he has parted ways with Sekhukhune United by mutual consent, just six months after joining the newly-promoted DStv Premiership side from Mamelodi Sundowns.

It leaves the 25-year-old at something of a crossroads in his career having failed to kick on from the early promise he showed with The Brazilians.
Lukhubeni managed just two minutes in the DStv Premiership this season but was coming off an excellent campaign on loan at TTM (now Marumo Gallants) in 2020/21. He came off the bench in the Nedbank Cup final, where his side beat Chippa United 1-0.
Ironically, the man keeping him out of the Sekhukhune side this season, Nyiko Mobbie, was in the Chippa lineup that day. The club has also signed right-back Luckyboy Mokoena in this window.
“I really learnt a lot and enjoyed my stay at the club,” Lukhubeni said of his time at Sekhukhune. It is now time for a new chapter. I have officially and amicably parted ways with the club.
“My management agency will advise what is next for me. It will be communicated in the near future.”
Lukhubeni was promoted to the Sundowns first team in 2019/20 season but was sold on a permanent basis to Sekhukhune at the start of this campaign.

Orlando Pirates have recalled loanee Bonisile Mbangwa from Pele Pele and are said to be considering handing a first team berth to the player.
“Pirates have recalled their youngster Mbangwa from Pele Pele. He has been handed a senior team contract after being called into the office on Friday,” said the source close to the club.
Pirates have drawn criticism for their failure to utilise talents that come through their system with a number of players thriving elsewhere leaving the Sea Robbers to wonder what might have been.

Liverpool recall Williams from Swansea loan

Thu 20 Jan, 18:31

Liverpool defender Rhys Williams has been recalled from his loan at second-tier Swansea City, the Premier League club said on Thursday.

* Get DStv or Showmax Pro to watch all the action live.
Williams has struggled since joining Swansea on deadline day of the transfer season in August, making just seven appearances for the Championship side across all competitions. His last league appearance came against Middlesbrough on 4 December.
"Gutted it didn't go to plan but it's been a pleasure to be a swan for the time I was given," Williams said on social media.
The 20-year-old played 19 times for Liverpool in the previous season, after their defensive resources were depleted by injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, with stand-ins Fabinho and Jordan Henderson also sidelined.

Maritzburg run eye over Zambia forward Samu

Thu 20 Jan, 08:05

Maritzburg United are assessing Zambia forward Friday Samu, who is the leading forward in the MTN Super League this season with 14 goals for Green Buffaloes.

* Get DStv or Showmax Pro to watch all the action live.
Samu was a spearhead of Buffaloes’ charge up the table in the early part of the season, and while the team’s form has trailed off, he remains an impressive performer.
The 26-year-old has reportedly spent the last nine years with Buffaloes having joined as a teenager, but is looking for a move to South Africa to take the next step in his career.
He has been at Maritzburg for close to a week and the club is set to make a decision on him soon as they look to improve their fortunes in the second half of the campaign.
Maritzburg are seeking to plug the hole left by Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who has sealed a move to Major League Soccer side Minnesota United.
They brought in Ghana forward Richard Zumah at the start of the season but he has a single goal in eight appearances in the DStv Premiership, while French forward Amadou Soukouna has two goals in 13 appearances.

Nodada looking forward to Du Preez link-up

Cape Town City midfielder Thabo Nodada says he is excited for the challenge of representing Coastal United in the inaugural DStv Compact Cup that will kick-off this weekend with the semifinals.

United are up against Dinaledi in Durban in their semi on Saturday with a squad chosen by fans from topflight clubs City, Stellenbosch FC, Chippa United and Baroka FC.
"I'm pretty excited, I'm on a red card [in the DStv Premiership] so it is going to be a while before I can get back onto the pitch and play. So to be given an opportunity to play now in January is amazing,” Nodada said.
He will have some familiar teammates, such as fellow City stars Taariq Fielies, Terrence Mashego and Mpho Makola, but also a host of new players to get used to. The one he is most looking forward to taking the field with?
"I am looking forward to playing with Ashley du Preez, the striker from Stellenbosch. I think he is very quick and a great player. So I am looking forward to putting balls in behind [the opposition defence] for him to chase.”

Nodada has endured a difficult first half of the season but thanked the fans for voting for him to play in the competition.
"I don't think I have been at my best in the last six months, with injuries and other things. So for the fans to choose me over other players is really a confidence booster and I won't let them down.”
The South African domestic season is currently on a long mid-season break due to the Africa Cup of Nations that is taking place in Cameroon.

Dembele must leave for his and Barca's sake - club director

Thu 20 Jan, 20:25

Ousmane Dembele has been told to leave Barcelona before the January transfer window closes for the sake of himself and the Catalan club, director Mateu Alemany has said.
The French forward, who joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, has failed to deliver on the potential that made the Spanish club pay €105 million for his services, scoring 31 goals in 129 appearances.
Barcelona, who have debts of more than €1.35 billion, risk losing him for free at the end of the season if he does not renew his contract.
"The reality is that we began negotiations with his agents five months ago. During this time... which the club's position has been to want him to continue," Alemany told Barca TV.
"We are 11 days away from the closing of the transfer window and we understand that... the player has decided not to continue and we want players committed to Barca. Both for his sake and for the club he has to leave as soon as possible."
Dembele said that he would not respond to blackmail.
"It's been four consecutive years that I have been listening to things about me and I was quiet," Dembele wrote on Instagram.
"I forbid anyone to give the impression that I am not involved in the sports project or attribute intentions to me that I have never had. We are negotiating and I'll leave my agent with it."
Dembele was not included in the squad for Thursday's Copa del Rey game at Athletic Bilbao and the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) said Barcelona could not punish the France international for not renewing his contract.
"AFE considers that not reaching an agreement to renew an employment contract does not imply a labour breach, so it cannot have any consequence for the provision of services," it said.
Dembele was brought in as a replacement for Neymar who moved to Paris St Germain in 2017 in a record-breaking transfer.
Barca also signed Philippe Coutinho using the funds from the Neymar deal but the Brazilian midfielder struggled to make an impact, spending the 2019-20 season on loan at Bayern Munich and joining Aston Villa on loan this month.

Lloris signs new Tottenham contract - reports

Thu 20 Jan, 23:40

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has agreed a new contract with the Premier League club, according to British media reports on Thursday.

* Get DStv or Showmax Pro to watch all the action live.
The France goalkeeper's existing deal was due to expire at the end of this season, sparking speculation he could be on the move.
But the 35-year-old is reported to have signed a new contract that will keep him in north London until 2024.
Lloris, who arrived from Lyon in 2012, was free to talk to foreign clubs from the start of this month.
However, the World Cup winner looks to have committed his future to Antonio Conte's side, with an official announcement from Tottenham expected in the next 24 hours.
Tottenham's revival since Conte's appointment earlier this season has convinced Lloris to stay.
"He's our captain, he is a top goalkeeper for us, he has great experience," Conte said recently.
"He knows very well Tottenham. He loves this shirt and this badge. For me he is an important player and I'm sure that they are going to find a solution for him to continue to play with Tottenham."

Jota double fires Liverpool into League Cup final

Thu 20 Jan, 23:55

Diogo Jota fired Liverpool into the League Cup final against Chelsea as the Portugal forward's double sealed a 2-0 win at Arsenal in the semifinal second leg on Thursday.
Jota put Liverpool on course for Wembley with a first half strike and he clinched their berth with a late second goal in north London.
Jurgen Klopp's side will face Chelsea in the final on February 27.
Jota's 13th and 14th club goals this season underlined his value at a time when Liverpool are without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane due to the African Cup of Nations.
The Reds, who last lifted the League Cup in 2012, are back in the final for the first time since 2016 as they aim to win the competition for a record ninth time.
It will be Klopp's fifth cup final with Liverpool since he took charge in 2015.
In the week that Liverpool's former chief executive Peter Robinson died aged 86, it was fitting the club returned to the final of a tournament they won four years in a row under his stewardship in the 1980s.
For Arsenal, it was a frustrating loss after they managed to grind out a 0-0 draw in last week's first leg at Anfield despite Granit Xhaka's red card.
Mikel Arteta's youthful side were exposed by battle-hardened opponents, emphasising the improvements still needed to revive the Gunners.
Thomas Partey's stoppage-time dismissal for two bookings in quick succession rubbed salt into their wounds.
Arsenal were unable to field a team when they successfully asked for last weekend's north London derby against Tottenham to be postponed.
But Arteta sent out close to a full strength side just days later as fit-again trio Takehiro Tomiyasu, Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard all returned.
Caoimhin Kelleher replaced Alisson Becker in goal for Liverpool and quickly repaid Klopp's faith with a superb save in the fifth minute.
DEADLY JOTA
Alexandre Lacazette's free-kick was headed for the top corner until Kelleher scrambled across to tip it onto the crossbar.
But Klopp's men cut through the Arsenal defence to take the lead in the 19th minute.
Roberto Firmino's deft backheel found Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield and his raking pass reached Jota on the left flank.
Cutting inside to the edge of the Arsenal area, Jota's impudent nutmeg took him past Tomiyasu and, with three defenders arriving in a vain attempt to block, the Portugal forward scuffed a low shot that-trickled past slow to react keeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Arsenal were rocked by that blow and struggled to lay a glove on Liverpool for the rest of the half.
They had a golden opportunity to get back on level terms immediately after the interval when Albert Sambi Lokonga's lofted pass sent Lacazette clear on goal, only for the French striker to balloon his shot over the bar.
Kaide Gordon, Liverpool's 17-year-old forward, wasted an equally good chance with a hurried close-range effort that flew high into the crowd.
Ibrahima Konate was close to putting the tie beyond Arsenal's reach with a towering header that hit the foot of the post.
In a wide-open finale, Liverpool substitute Takumi Minamino saw his shot blocked on the line by Ben White before Gabriel Martinelli's rising drive forced a good stop from Kelleher at the other end.
Jota made sure Liverpool would not rue those missed chances as he ran onto Alexander-Arnold's pass and chipped Ramsdale in the 77th minute.
The goal was subject to a lengthy VAR check for offside, but Jota and Liverpool were eventually able to celebrate their place at Wembley.

Egyptian side Ahly, led by former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, have won the title for the last two years and knocked the South African champions out in the quarterfinals in 2020-21.

The latter are coached by former Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy, who won the Uefa Champions League as a player with Porto.
There will be a Tunisian derby in Group C where Esperance and Etoile du Sahel clash with Algerian side CR Belouizdad and first time participants Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana.
There is another heavyweight tussle in Group D as Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca, who lifted the continental title in 2017, meet top Egyptian club Zamalek, as well as Angola's Petro Atletico and Sagrada Esperanca.
The draw was also made for the Confederation Cup on Tuesday.
Matches in both competitions are set to start on the weekend of February 11-12, one week after the completion of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Ahly may have to reschedule their opening fixture as they compete in the Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates from February 3-12.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates striker target Victor Letsoalo is reportedly set to rock the boat at Royal AM in the upcoming January transfer window.

Both the Soweto giants have been persistently linked with the signature of Letsoalo and his form for Royal AM this season has intensified that.

Chiefs and Pirates seem to keep changing ascendency in the race for Letsoalo, with Amakhosi rumoured to be the first club that was in for his services.

However, those links proved to quieten down in the previous transfer window, with the Buccaneers being the club linked with the Bafana Bafana international profusely.
Those links would, in fact, persist even after the transfer window, which made it look like they were serious about signing him.

ORLANDO PIRATES REPORTEDLY OFFERED A SWAP DEAL

In fact, Pirates sources went as far as claiming that the club was so willing to do the deal, that they would propose a swap deal with troublemaker Gabadinho Mhango joining Royal AM, in exchange for Letsoalo.

However, after Mhango had knuckled down there seems to have been a change of tune in the Bucs camp about the player, with the Malawian international now reportedly set for a contract extension at the club.

That coincided with a change in the rumour mill too, as Letsoalo was forced to answer questions linking him to Chiefs again.
The 29-year-old has been a thorn in the flesh of the Glamour boys this season, with a his four goals in two games against the club, making it hard for them to miss him.
It now looks as if, he will make things easier for them, should they want to sign him this January. This is because Kickoff are reporting that the player is set to hand in a transfer request to force a move to Gauteng.

“Victor Letsoalo has made his intentions known to the club that he wants to move elsewhere and is not ready to remain at Royal AM beyond his current contract, He wants to move away from Royal AM this January. He will meet again with the club in the new year, where he is expected to officially hand in a transfer request,” said the source.

Mambush’ Mudau tips Peter Shalulile to break his Sundowns scoring record

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Peter Shalulile has received a huge endorsement from club scoring legend and former captain Daniel “Mambush” Mudau, who predicted he will score more than 20 goals this season.
Mudau said he has little doubt the Namibian hit-man will also break his long-standing all-time scoring record for the Brazilians of 110 goals in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era if he stays longer at Chloorkop.

ADVERTISING

Mudau, who formed a devastating partnership with Nigerian Raphael Chukwu in the 2000s, scored 110 goals for Sundowns in the PSL era, but his overall tally sits at 170 and that mark will take some doing to be passed.

Since the establishment of the PSL in 1996, only Wilfred Mugeyi (Bush Bucks), Pollen Ndlanya (Kaizer Chiefs), Colins Mbesuma (Chiefs) and Siyabonga Nomvethe (Moroka Swallows) have scored 20 or more league goals in a season.
“I have been highly impressed with him (Shalulile),” said Mudau, acknowledging the Namibian is scoring at a phenomenal rate.
“If he continues at the rate he is scoring at the moment, he will definitely go on to score more than 20 goals this season. He is scoring at a very high rate and I don’t think I had scored so many goals for Sundowns at the same stage.”

Shalulile scored 15 goals and contributed six assists, and was named the Footballer and DStv Premiership Player’s Player of the Season in his first campaign with the Brazilians last season.

He has shown he is not a one season wonder as he has already rifled 13 goals and three assists this season, and Mudau is confident the striker will reach the 20-goal mark during their remaining 11 league matches.
If Shalulile reaches the 20-goal mark he will be the first player in almost 10 years to have done so since Nomvethe in the 2010-11 season while playing for Moroka Swallows.
“He is a busy player who keeps defenders on their toes all the time. He will not only score 20 goals but I believe he will break my all-time scoring record at Sundowns if he stays at the club longer.
“He is a clinical finisher. The other thing I like about him is that he is a very disciplined athlete who takes his job seriously.”
Asked what makes Shalulile difficult for opposition defenders, Mudau said he is always sniffing around the edge or inside the box for opportunities and has a devastating eye for goals.
“Sometimes he runs away from defenders by going wide but when he gets an opportunity to score he will punish you. That’s what makes him a very dangerous player.
“I know sometimes he misses chances but as long as he is on that pitch there is a strong possibility he will get one chance and bury it.
“He is not your typical target man who sits in the box, like Raphael Chukwu or the late Philemon Masinga used to do. Sometimes he runs to the left or right and he also goes to the middle and he benefits from the supply from the likes of Themba Zwane, Neo Maema and other midfielders.”

Mudau said he would be happy if Shalulile broke his PSL record.
“Records are there to be broken and mine is going to be broken one day. I will be happy if he does it. I have always said records must not take too long to be broken because that shows people are not improving.”

Sundowns went to the Christmas break enjoying a huge 14-point lead in the DStv Premiership over second-placed Orlando Pirates, but Mudau, who captained the Brazilians to numerous championships, said the job is not yet done.
“It is early to predict who will win the league but they have accumulated enough points and they will be happy with what they have achieved so far at the halfway stage of the season.
“They have put themselves in the safe zone going into the second round of the campaign, which has the Nedbank Cup and the group stages of the Caf Champions League, which includes lots of travelling.
“We have vastly experienced coaches in Manqoba Mngqithi, Steve Komphela and Rulani Mokwena who will know better than anyone the job is not yet done and complacency will not be tolerated in the second round.”

Why Ndah’s Nigeria Call-Up Could Be Bad News For Pirates

7Dec 28, 2021 - 08:30 am
By Soccer Laduma

In what is a huge milestone for Orlando Pirates defender Olisa Ndah after only four months with the Soweto giants, the 23-year-old has been named in Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations finals, following his impressive displays under co-coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids this season.

However, the player’s rise to stardom could be detrimental to Pirates’ future plans as the centre-back could soon have to leave the club if all goes according to plan for him and his handlers.
Read: Downs Monitoring Bafana Striker
As reported in edition 1247 of Soccer Laduma, the talented player who starred for Akwa United last season before being spotted by the Buccaneers is very ambitious and has sights on securing an overseas move soon.
As confirmed by sources in the know, by coming to Bucs, Ndah had plans to use the club and the DStv Premiership as a springboard for overseas.
Following his call-up to the strong Super Eagles’ squad, a source confirmed that the player is excited in realising that he could soon realise his dreams of playing in Europe.
Read: Hlongwane Joins TS Galaxy!
“Olisa Ndah is very talented and highly rated in Nigeria. He could have easily found his way to Europe after performing so well last season in helping Akwa United to win the league in Nigeria, but he opted for a move to the South African league when he got the opportunity to do so to boost his chances of a move to a big and better league in Europe when the time is right,” said the source.
As confirmed by Pirates when they announced the player’s signing, Ndah signed a three-year contract with the club, and depending on what the plans are, the Soweto giants might decide to sell the player in the coming months if they receive a good offer to avoid losing him on a free at the expiry of the deal in 2024.

Defenders Badr Benoun and Mohamed Chibi and striker Soufiane Rahimi were added although the trio were all in action at the recent Arab Cup in Qatar.
There was still no place for Hakim Ziyech. He has been at odds with Halilhodzic since last summer after the veteran coach reproached the Chelsea star for his indiscipline.
Even though European clubs are threatening to withhold African players, all but four members of the squad play for clubs in Uefa nations.
Among them are Paris Saint-Germain winger Achraf Hakimi, forward Youssef En-Nesyri of Sevilla and Barcelona right wing Abde Ezzalzouli.
Morocco begin their campaign against Ghana on January 10 and then have further group games against the Comoros (January 14) and Gabon (January 18).

A relentless Australia spearheaded by debutant Scott Boland skittled England for an embarrassing 68 on Tuesday to win the third test by an innings and 14 runs and retain the Ashes with two matches still to play.

Just when a demoralised England thought their tour could not get much worse, they folded in the morning on day three in Melbourne and will now be desperate to avoid a series whitewash.

England resumed at the MCG on 31 for four, still 51 runs behind, after a disastrous final hour on Monday against some outstanding fast bowling that left their Ashes dreams in tatters.

Their survival rested on skipper Joe Root, but when he fell for 28, it was just a matter of time before the rest followed – all over before lunch in an embarrassing chapter for English cricket.

"The bowlers have just turned up and owned their areas outside off-stump. There have been big partnerships, everyone's performed, everyone's contributed – it's a great feeling."

Ben Stokes resumed on two but his poor tour continued when he was clean-bowled by Starc for 11. Jonny Bairstow made five and when Root was out it was all over, with the tailenders quickly following.

"It is what it is," said a dejected Root, who is facing growing calls over his captaincy.

"Credit to Australia, they blew us away last night and they have outplayed us in this test match – in fact the series so far.

"We have a lot of hard work to do now and come back strong in the last two games."

COVID THREAT

Whether there would be play at all at the MCG was in doubt after four members of the England party – two support staff and two family members - tested positive for coronavirus on Monday.

But all players from both teams underwent PCR tests after stumps and returned negative results Tuesday morning, with the first ball bowled on schedule.

England had headed to Melbourne knowing they must win to keep the five-test series alive after heavy defeats in Brisbane and Adelaide, with Australia only needing a
