35 years ago today, television audiences saw Lucille Ball like they had never seen her before. Lucy took on the most atypical role of her television career when she portrayed a bag lady in CBS’s Stone Pillow. The ads proclaimed, “Once she made you laugh, tonight she’ll touch your heart.” This was Lucy’s sole made for television movie. Lucy had turned down plenty of scripts, but she was intrigued by this project and the thought working with acclaimed director George Schaefer. She knew it would be hard for people to accept their beloved Lucy as a bag lady. However, she thought it would would help bring attention to the plight of the homeless; in particular older women who find themselves in these dire straits. Lucy had her character named Florabelle after her own grandmother and used aspects of her gutsy, “pioneer woman” spirit in her characterization. Lucy threw herself into the on location shooting and dealt with injuries and ill health brought on by the unseasonably warm weather in New York. When the movie aired, it garnered impressively high ratings, but reviews were decidedly mixed. Some praised Lucy for taking on such a challenge and, as Lucy expected, others did not want to see her in such a downbeat, unglamorous role. Lucy just hoped it brought some awareness to an important, rarely depicted issue.

I recently finished a patchwork quilt, and although some people might see it as a bit tacky, I truly love how it turned out. I took my time piecing it together, putting care into every detail.
It may not be perfect in everyone’s eyes, but it brings me a lot of joy and satisfaction. This quilt reflects my effort and creativity, and I’m proud of it, regardless of any criticism.❤ 🩷 🧡
