I’ve heard people say, “All you need to do is pray and be quiet and listen to God—you don’t need all that theology stuff.”

WRONG!

Almost every person I’ve heard say that, or who says it to me, reveals after a little more conversation that they have a level, many times a massive level of deception in their beliefs.

We 100% need theology. As believers in Christ, it’s our duty to know Him and make Him known. Here are two reasons (off the top of my head, though there are surely more) why having an understanding of theology is vitally important:
1. Having an understanding of theology helps you recognize false prophets and teachers so you are not deceived.
2. A deeper understanding of theology helps you understand the character of God on a deeper level, thus drawing you closer to Him.

Prayer is powerful, but if we don’t understand the Scriptures, we put ourselves in a position to be deceived. Listening to your pastor is great, but only if you know the Word beforehand or check what they say for accuracy afterward.
