As a parent it is important to teach your children about human trafficking and it's prevention measures. It is time we taught children that stories of 'rraboko' or kidnappers are not just myths but real stories that happen. Some of the prevention measures include but are not limited to;

1. Ensure your child knows your full names and phone number by head. This is important for cases when your child gets lost or kidnapped and is found. The police have to be able to contact you through that child.

2. Have a safety family code. This is where you and your child have a password/code that you use to identify each other with. It is important in cases where you leave your child alone at home and instruct them to request for a code/password for whoever knocks on the door even if it's you. It is also important for the child to demand it from someone they know or don't know who 'claims' that you sent them to pick the child from school.

3. Teach your child not take lifts from strangers and even people they know without your approval or your presence. Never allow your child to travel alone. If you cannot drop your child at school, at least have someone take them to school.

4. Always get the names of all your child's friends so that you know where to search first if your child is not home by curfew time. Also normalize knowing where your child is going and with whom.

The Law

The 2014 Anti-Human Trafficking Act of 2014 was promulgated to provide for the prohibition, prevention and combating of human trafficking by providing measures to protect and assist victims of trafficking in persons.

Section 10 of the Act imposes a fine of up P500 000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 25 years, or both to anyone convicted for human trafficking.

Prosecution

Botswana has in 2018 managed to secure its first ever trafficking conviction through the Anti-Human Trafficking Act.

The High Court sentenced a South African woman trafficker to 18 months imprisonment, nine of which were suspended.

However, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) appealed the sentence to seek for a stringent penalty and the DPP has since introduced the specialised anti-trafficking unit to monitor the investigation or prosecution of trafficking cases, according to Deputy Prosecutor in DPP Thato Dibeela.

International commitments

As a result of combating the scourge, Botswana is party to various regional and international commitments such as the Palermo Protocol which is aimed at preventing, suppressing and punishing trafficking in persons, especially women and children.

The trap

Some of the circumstances under which Batswana are being exposed to traffickers is being promised lucrative opportunities such as jobs and scholarships around the world including in the far European countries.

Locals are prone to traffickers through online scamming and jobs recruiting agencies, with such cases including Batswana being trafficked to the USA with a promise for jobs. She said the trafficked are often forced to work under deplorable slave conditions.

A 70-year-old farmer, a well known figure for selling vegetables around Gaborone, has been charged with human trafficking.

Reuben Tema, of Mogapatona ward in Totome village, appeared before Molepolole Magistrates Court on Monday and was granted conditional bail.

The old man, along with his employee, Nkosilati Moyo, 33, is accused of trafficking a 12-year-old Zimbabwean boy into the country back in February.

It is alleged that Tema had wanted to employ the Jocholo village youth as a herdboy at his farm in Lentsweletau.

According to those close to the case, Tema had ordered Moyo to assist him in finding someone to work on the farm.

Following out his boss’ orders, Moyo duly travelled to Zimbabwe and returned with the boy, having reportedly received permission from the lad’s mother.

A police source further told The Voice that upon realising the boy was a minor, Tema intended to return him to Zimbabwe once lockdown is over.

The two suspects were arrested last Monday and appeared for arraignment two days later where they were remanded in custody.

The Defence Attorney, Gabaikanngwe Kebalepile subsequently filed an urgent application for Tema to be released from custody.

Addressing court on Monday, Principal Prosecutor, Enock Mahwite from Directorate of Public Prosecution said he did not oppose the accused bail considering the presumption of innocence and also the fact that the victim has already been taken to a place of safety.

“Our concession should not be misread to mean that we are trivialising this matter. This is a very serious matter and there are various considerations that are still going to be made because there are several offences that have been committed according to our records,” stressed Mahwite, who described the case as ‘one of the most serious’ currently being dealt with in Botswana.

Human Trafficking is not only international.

11/03/2020

Human trafficking is a growing phenomenon in which human beings are bought and sold for profits through forced prostitution, bonded labor and involuntary domestic services

TYPES OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

1. S*x trafficking - involves commercial s*xual exploitation such as military prostitution, po*******hy and s*x tourism. The commercial exploitation of woman and children has ties to prostitution, po*******hy and exotic dancing..

2. Forced labour - victims are forced to work against their will under threat of violence or other form of punishment. Freedom is restricted and a degree of ownership is exerted.

3. Child labour - instead of going to school, these children are sent to work at farms and cattleposts. Some are forcibly recruited into armies and they are trained to be soldiers at a young age..

4. Body mutilation - in Botswana, the most common type of human trafficking is forcibly abducting people for body parts. Children, men and women are trafficked for ritual purposes.

07/03/2020

As reported over the past five years, Botswana is a source, transit, and destination country for women and children subjected to forced labor and s*x trafficking. Residents of Botswana most vulnerable to trafficking are unemployed women, the rural poor, agricultural workers, and children. Some parents in poor rural communities send their children to work for wealthier families as domestic servants in cities or in agriculture and cattle farming in remote areas, increasing their vulnerability to forced labor. Young Batswana serving as domestic workers for extended family may be denied access to education and basic necessities or subjected to confinement or verbal, physical, or s*xual abuse – conditions indicative of forced labor. Batswana girls and women are possibly exploited in prostitution within the country, including in bars and by truck drivers along major highways. Some women may be subjected to trafficking internally or transported from neighboring countries and subjected to s*xual exploitation. Officials confirmed adults and children of the San ethnic minority group are subjected to labor conditions on private farms and cattle posts in Botswana's rural west that might rise to the level of forced labor. Undocumented migrant Zimbabwean children might be vulnerable to trafficking in Botswana. There has been no comprehensive international or domestic study of trafficking trends within Botswana
