Looking back on our days floating along the Mekong!
-
Taking a boat ride along Mekong is an unmissable part of travel in Vietnam and our biggest piece of advice is to avoid the organised tours that you can book from little booking offices along the main river.
-
We were staying in Can Tho and fell for this the first time and took a boat tour from there where we sailed along a busy river full of big boats and tourists.
We were then taken to the regular tourist spots like a noodle factory and “floating market”.
On our second trip we decided to do something different and would highly recommend this:
Our advice would be to rent a scooter, get up nice and early, around 5am, and then drive to Phong Dien where we stopped a local on a boat on the side of the river and asked her to take us round some of the local spots to experience real culture!
On this journey we experienced the real bustling, floating markets with locals selling Pho, Coffee, fruit and vegetables, everything you need really.
From there we asked to visit some small connecting rivers which was super magical with trees meeting above us, totally surrounded by green.
We saw locals washing their clothes, children playing and swimming in the river and even got off to play on a bamboo bridge and pick our own papayas straight from the tree.
All the time having a sweet little local woman as our guide who made us hats and little windmills out of bamboo leaves that we gave to the children!
This is our favourite way to experience real, raw local culture!
