Police investigating disruption of World Bank palliative programme for vulnerable persons

The Police in Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area is investigating the disruption of a World Bank community based enumeration of the poor and vulnerable in Aniocha South council.

According to the Police in the council, the exercise was disrupted by a politician who stormed the venue of the exercise with dozens of his supporters armed with dangerous weapons. In post on his verified page, Harrison Gwamnishu, the politician who is bidding for election into the Delta State House of Assembly, claimed that he stormed the venue of the World Bank programme at Ward 5, Ubulu-Uku in the council to "prevent the collection of PVCs".

Following the complaint of officials coordinating the World Bank programme, Police from Ogwashi-Uku invited him for questioning. Although he failed to respond to the invitation for over two weeks, the resolve by the Police to declare him wanted eventually forced him to give himself up on Thursday.

Ogwashi-uku police command has said that investigation is ongoing on the matter involving the arrest of Gwamnishu who says he is a human rights activist.

This was the stand when newsmen visited the office of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Thursday afternoon.

Gwamnishu, was earlier reported to have disrupted the enumeration exercise of the Delta State Operation Coordinating Unit and National Social Safety at
Ubulu-uku.

Mrs. Rose Dieli, State coordinator for Aniocha South Local Government Area in a chat with newsmen expressed disappoinment over the disruption by Gwamnishu and his thugs.

According to her, Harrison had led thugs to the venue where the three weeks mop-up exercise on Second Phase, Community Based Targeting Process and enumeration of the poor and vulnerable under the auspices of the World Bank was holding.

UDC Lauds Chukwunwike's Maintenance Project on Ubulu-Uku/ Issele-Uku Road

The President–General of Ubulu-uku Development Council (UDC), Sir Jonathan Monye, has described the ongoing maintenance work at failed sections of the Ubulu-Uku/ Issele-Uku Road as a "timely intervention to looming disaster".

He spoke on Monday during an interview he granted newsmen at his Agbonta-Idumuede residence, Ubulu-Uku.

According to him, the rehabilitated road was not just dilapidated but used to be a flashpoint area with lots of security threat. He noted that Hon. Jude Chukwunwike's decision to fix the bad portions of the road suits the proverbial adage of 'using a stone to kill two birds'.

"In the past, that section used to be more than dilapidated. It is to me a flashpoint. Most of the kidnapping cases that happened years back took place there.

"When the road was in the stage of total collapse, we called the attention of the chairman to it.

"I drove down there to see for myself and sincerely, the quality of work going on there beats imagination", he said, adding that previous palliative measures could not serve the purpose.

Giving accreditation to the personality of the Executive Chairman, Monye, a lawyer, said Chukwunwike is a man of few words, but lots of action.

"I must in all honesty commend him. The kind of stone base used for the work shows that he wants to permanently solve the lingering problem so residents can commute smoothly and safely from Aniocha South to Aniocha North".

He also thanked the the executive Chairman for donating a security vehicle to Ubulu-Uku Vigilante Group.

Work Begins at Eke Market's Garri Section as Chukwunwike Continues Renovation of Community of Markets

In continuation of his programme of renovation and upgrade of markets in Aniocha South Local Government Area, work has begun at the Garri Section of Eke Market in Ubulu-Uku where facilities are now being rehabilitated.

Previously, the section which accommodates traders of the creamy granular cassava flour was an eyesore with poor adherence to environmental rules. It was so bad that those who came from other states found it difficult to do business at the market each time it rained.

According to the traders, the experience was like "walking through a trap before buying or selling". But, in his capacity as the Executive Chairman, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike after evaluating the situation, directed that the floor in the garri sectiont should be given a concrete overlay.

Traders who had been sceptical of the project given the failed promises made by previous administrations were pleasantly surprised when on 19 July actual work started. Engineers and other technical personnel began utilising materials that had been previously deposited at the site.

For Mrs. Mbem Oyeanosi from Obior, the council boss has shown that his ears are open to the yearnings of the people. "For many years we suffered because this whole environment had issues particularly when it rains. We find it difficult to sell our goods, those who want to buy can't walk freely, everywhere was muddy.

"Now, we are happy that the council chairman is addressing our plight. May God bless and promote him to higher levels", Oyeanosi prayed.

Similarly, Mrs. Ojegbo thanked the council boss for not hesitating to salvage the muddy nature of the Garri arena.

"We were very happy this morning when we got to the market and discovered that things are no longer the same. The mud has been taken care of by the concrete floor and everywhere is dry".

Ogwashi-Uku Abattoir: Additional Witness Statement for the Environmental Health Initiatives of Chukwunwike-led Administration

"When the report of the ugly state of Ogwashi-Uku slaughterhouse got to him, he immediately began work on it, so that the environment will be healthy, he has shown that he is a man of the people".

With this statement, Chief Oliver Chukwuani, chairman Delta State butchers Aniocha South chapter on Friday described the executive chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike as a man who knows how to get desired results, fast.

Speaking on the grounds of ongoing renovation of the abattoir at Ogwashi-Uku market, Chukwuani added that the council boss has a marvellous response mechanism that is bent on making a difference.

According to him, the abattoir which is smeared with an adhesive dirt is turning into a locale for hygienically prepared meats.

"As chairman of butchers in Aniocha South, I can confidently tell you that this abattoir was in awful state for years. The place smelled horribly and its building was leaking. The butchers weren't proud of the place but couldn't help the situation.

"But, when the report of the ugly state of Ogwashi-Uku slaughterhouse got to him, he immediately began work on it, so that the environment will be healthy, he has shown that he is a man of the people.

"I am very happy with the renovation work going on at the moment and I believe that by the time it's completed, we will have an abattoir that is nifty and positioned to serve healthy meats to members of the public.

"Let me use this medium to thank the executive chairman for coming to our aid because what he is doing here is not easy. The rot has been here no age", the chief butcher appended.

A market leader who was identified as Chiedu revealed that the abattoir at Ogwashi-Uku market was "a store of "disease causing bacteria". He added that asides its horrible smell, "maggots were seen moving freely as butchers stand to cut meat in pieces".

The renovation of the abattoir is an additional witness statement for the environmental health initiatives of the chukwunwike-led administration.

Ogwashi-Uku sons commend Chukwunwike's 'concern for well-being of residents'

"I believe in the power of gratitude for through it one gets promoted to the next level. Most people miss out on opportunity because they concentrate more on money instead of being grateful enough to do their best at any given time."

This statement was made on Tuesday by the Executive Chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike, while welcoming Mr. Okofu Moses, a prominent Ogwashi-Uku son to his office.

Okofu who led a three-man delegation, said the visit is to appreciate the council boss for his inspiring disposition and concern for the well-being of Aniocha South residents. He noted that Chukwunwike's nature has virtually wired him to take the LGA to greater heights.

"We have come to appreciate you for the uncommon grace that you have been able to make possible in this council. We cannot take it for granted because we know how bad things were until you brought in solution", they said.

Responding, the council boss said gratitude is a powerful show of brilliance, adding that it takes a man of understanding to appreciate or encourage works done in good faith.

His words: "While it is not mandatory to appreciate someone who has done good, the truth is that appreciation opens doors for the person who engages it. But, more importantly is the relationship that we keep that is nurtured in the cause of showing gratitude. With gratitude, relationships get better and solutions become easier to access", Chukwunwike added.

Chukwunwike urges Ogwashi-Uku market leaders to check improper waste disposal, fix opening and closing times

Dissatisfied with the environmental state of Ogwashi-Uku Main Market, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike, Execute Chairman of Aniocha South Council, has chided the management team of the market for failing to take adequate measures to improve it's sanitory state.
He, therefore, directed that a task force be set up to enforce environmental rules and ensure proper disposal of waste in the market.

He also directed the management team to fix official time for the opening and closing of the market. The designated period should be enforced with a period set aside for traders to clean up the market.
Chukwunwike gave the directives when he received the Women's Arm of Ogwashi-Uku Development Union led by the Omu of Ogwashi-Uku, Chief Edith Rafua.

Omu Rafua had earlier decried the level of sanitation in the market. According to her, the absence of a task force to enforce environmental rules had led to the degeneration of the sanitory that could precipitate a health crisis.

Omu Rafua said activities of beggars, poor management of waste and inability of the market leadership to fix a particular time for the market to open and close, pose threats to both lives and properties.

"The place where animals are being slaughtered is very dirty. Moreover, sick people come to the market to beg for alms thereby endangering the health of others", she said.

Hon. Pastor Chukwunwike expressed surprise that the management of the market had not been able to handle some of the challenges. He noted that the market should have set up task force that will enforce the proper management of waste as well as fix the opening and closing times of the market gates, adding that such measures will ensure that there is orderliness.

"The Head of Environmental department will be asked to assist you. I know that she and her team are capable of making the desired outcome happen at the market. But, on your part, I expect that the market should have a task force that will do most of the job. Let us know when you encounter any difficulty but we shouldn't be seen as bringing the initiative", Chukwunwike added.

Chukwunwike commends George Iwelu's road rehabilitation initiative

The environmental protection efforts of one Mr. Gorge Iwelu from Umudei quarter in Ogwashi-Uku has got the attention of the Executive Chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike .

Iwelu, upon relocating from Lagos took it upon himself to clear the drains and fill the impassable portions of Adaigbo Street.

It was gathered that residents of the community find it difficult to access their homes or pass through Adaigbo which hitherto embodies stagnant water for days after each down pour.

When reports of Iwelu's efforts got to the council secretariat, the council boss instructed the Secretary to the Local Government Area, Prince Emordi Okonjo Herbert to lead an inspection team on a working visit to the location.

Speaking on behalf of the council boss when he visited the area, Prince Emordi said that Iwelu's gesture is indeed commendable as his palliative work in the area is easing the stress persons living in the area had to undergo. He thanked Mr. Iwelu for his selfless service, adding that if all well meaning residents of Aniocha South borrow a leaf from him, the entire council area will be better for it.

"Government cannot do everything, hence we commend this selfless effort and urge every resident to pick interest in the well being of the community for the betterment of all", Emordi added.

Conducting the council team round the street to unveil the level of work done, Iwelu said that his decision to clean up the drains and make the street passable was motivated by his vast experience as a man who is well travelled.

"Having travelled far and near, I return home to live in Ogwashi-uku. This road had being bad for a long time, people cannot pass through it on foot let alone drive to their houses and since I live on this street, I decided to kickstart the process of rehabilitating the road.

"I paid workers to clear the drains and went to the extent of sand filling those portions that were damaged by erosion. I did all these for the good of the community because government cannot do it alone", Iwelu said.
