Field trips can be beneficial to students in many ways. Unfortunately, our 5th grade and for some people, their 3rd grade field trip got canceled. Today, we interviewed Mrs. McCalister, a teacher here at JFK middle school, and got information about past and future field trips here at JFK . Currently, Mrs. Ebanks (An 8th grade English teacher) and Mrs. McCalister (An 8th grade Special Education teacher) are planning a possible trip this year for the 8th graders.
Covid unfortunately delayed field trips here at JFK for the past 2 years. Before covid started, we had 7th and 8th grade field trips. In the past, JFK students have gone to Adventureland, Cedar Beach, the circus, The Museum of Natural History, and seen plays down in Port Jefferson at Theater Three. We also had field trips for clubs, music classes, and other extracurricular activities.
Typically, teachers present field trip ideas to Dr. Fama and Dr. Quinn and hope for approval. One of the difficulties of planning field trips is the expense. Usually, people fill out a permission slip and attach an envelope with the money. For some families, it might be hard to afford, and that is why we might look into having more school fundraisers this year. Some students have expressed interest in doing a bake sale or car wash to raise money for a field trip. The eighth grade students are hoping to have a field trip in June toward the end of the school year. Hopefully, this article will get others talking about a field trip so this can happen.
