💻 Smart review: Nero or the Fall of Rome - Beneath The Swaying Fronds Of Elysian Fields
🎸 Genre: Epic Doom/Black Metal
📀 Label: Naturmacht Productions

PROs:
✅ Long and complex compositions with an intimate and depressive atmosphere; it really feels like being in Elysian fields.
✅ The more you listen to it, the more it grows. No passage is forced, everything flows naturally. I believe there are parts where I cried.
✅ The Roman concept is something that someone hardly gets tired of, luckily we have seen it grows in recent years.
✅ Production is vintage with cold sounds and every instrument clearly distinguishable, but

CONs:
❌ not everything is gold: drums are maybe a little too high in the mix, at times covering the other musicians work. (It happens only in the stereo and not with headphones, though).

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
This is a convincing opera prima for the Italian band, a great mix of epic, doom and black that satisfies the listener throughout the hour of music proposed. Definitely worthy of your attention.

💻 Smart review: Black Pestilence - Hail The Flesh
🎸 Genre: Black/Thrash Metal

PROs:
✅ A lot of raw metal straight in your face that will make your head bang.
✅ A good production with every instrument distinguishable and hardcore-like sounds.
✅ If attitude means anything, these guys have a lot of it.

CONs:
❌ It grows boring with time, the songs sound flat with a more of the same feel all around the album.
❌ When the band tries to slow down in the conclusive "Ephemeral", it fails to keep the attention of the listener.

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
You must appreciate raw metal to get into this album. First comparison that comes to mind is Toxic Holocaust with songs that aren't nearly that good. Those who worship Venom and music of this kind will find bread for their teeth, everyone else should stay away.

PROs:
✅ Modern and really unique sound with electronic parts, easy listening for everyone.
✅ Great vocals work both by Federica with her incredible clean extension and by Federico's growling ability, everything well mixed by a savvy songwriting by the latter.
✅ Duet by Federica and Giada (Frozen Crown) in the song "In a Heartbeat" is worth of mention: both voices work egregiously together.
✅ "Fading Like a Flower" by Roxette in Volturian style is a cover very well made.

CONs:
❌ Too short: you get to the end of the album without noticing, wanting for more.

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
The album makes you realize how far this band could go: the sound is unique, an easy listening for everyone as it has catchy melodies, modern and electronic sounds mixed with some metal. Federica's voice versatility makes it pleasant to be listened. If you like modern metal, check this album out; you will definitely love it!

The legend of the XII Saints is an enjoyable journey through the 12 houses of Seiya. Highly recommended for fans of the Seiya's saga!

✅ Good for people who don't know Bloodbound but who enjoy bands like Sabaton.

❌ It doesn't add much to Bloodbound's discography.

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
"Bloodheads United" is a great opportunity for people who want to approach Bloodbound's music without listening to their entire discography, while other listeners can find it not necessary. Still, an interesting release for loyal fans and collectors too.

✅ Classic grunge sound.
✅ Clean and crisp production.
✅ Nice debut performance.

CONs:
❌ Maybe even too clean of a production for the genre.
❌ Too many forgettable riffs that makes you want to skip some songs.
❌ An overall feeling of background music.

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
"Cowards" will make any grunge fan feel right at home, probably even too much. It sounds solid, but it doesn't take any risk in the creativity department and it goes for a tried and proven route, with all the benefits and flaws of the choice.

🎸 Genre: Thrash Metal

PROs:
✅ Headbang. A lot of it.
✅ Aggressive, various and mature with very memorable tunes.
✅ Production is modern, precise and with a perfect mixing, perfect for the concept of the album.
✅ "Glorious End" is an incredible song, the perfect conclusion for the album with the true gem.

CONs:
❌ Maybe a pair of tracks sub-par, considering that the par is very high.
❌ Vocals lack of variety and extension, some clean work here and there could have helped (i.e. on the otherwise great "Defiance of Fate").

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
"Weapons Of Tomorrow" takes the war concept from "Woe To The Vanquished" and explores it further, gifting us with an incredible album that will make fans happy.
A strong candidate for thrash release of the year.

✅ Various, unpredictable, a kaleidoscope of emotions and different styles.
✅ The band formed at Berklee and it's quite evident, since every member is a masterful musician.
✅ It's variety makes it enduring, permitting the listener to enjoy a new shade of it every time.

CONs:
❌ A little naive and immature, mostly in the lyrical concept of the album.
❌ They disbanded after this release, sadly making it their only one.

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
A great album for prog metal fan, masterfully written and played. It's just so sad that such a promising band made its incredible debut, the only album they conceived as a whole. We would really like to have more.

✅ Good production and
✅ Powerful and heavy sounds!
✅ Young band, they could be a cool surprise soon.

CONs:
❌ Songs' elements are not well balanced and the tracklist has some weak points.
❌ Last two songs are less good than the first two and they seem a little bit boring.

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
This young band from Calgary (Canada) has some hidden potential and their mixture of clean and growl vocals could be one of them.
Good and powerful production even if the second part of the tracklist is less impressive than the first one. The song "Razorblades" is very good!
Check them in the future, we could have a strong band!

✅ 70's hard'n'heavy with a lot of atmosphere.

✅ Good musical performance always focusing on the feeling of the songs.

❌ Difficult to approach at a first listen.

FINAL CONSIDERATION:
Spell's "Opulent Decay" is a good example of album based on atmosphere rather than heaviness. It is far from easy listening standards, but after a few listening sessions it becomes easier to engage to it.
