Oftentimes, when told to keep their back straight, beginners extend their spine and tilt their pelvis anteriorly.
It is unsafe to load your spine under these circumstances.

Keeping your back straight means contracting the muscles that stabilize the spine (usually referred to as the "core" muscles) whilst the spine is in a neutral position.

You can engage those muscles by bracing your abdominal muscles as if someone was about to hit you.
If done correctly, you should feel both your abdominal and back muscles tensing up.
