Measuring Oxygen in your Blood
———————————————
I recommend everyone have a pulse oximeter on hand, or know someone who can bring one by for you or your loved ones if you’re feeling short of breath and think you might have COVID-19.

O2 saturation in the blood is a great indicator on when you should be concerned enough to seek medical help.

Here’s a great educational video on Oxygen in the blood, by Dr John Campbell, who also explains how you would use a pulse oximeter.

His YouTube channel is a wealth of SARS-CoV-2 information you’re not going to find in the news or media on healthcare and our current battle to survive the coronavirus pandemic.

If you purchase a pulse oximeter, make sure it has an absolute “deliver by,” confirmation date, like on Amazon — or you could find yourself waiting months for an order that never arrives.

The preliminary results of a randomized, clinical trial with over 11,500 patients hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 shows that Dexamethazone, a steroid treatment, reduced mortality in ventilated patients by approximately one third.

Dexamethazone did not have any significant effect in treatment of non-ventilated patients.

There is a strong, evidentiary relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and severe outcomes in the elderly.

“This preliminary report hypothesized that immune system’s response to infections in the lung may play a role in 25(OH)D levels of elderly patients infected with COVID-19. We performed a retrospective study in two tertiary medical centers in South Asia.

The medical records of COVID-19 patients were reviewed and a total of 176 subjects included were the elderly whose age is at least 60 years, with information in age, body mass index (BMI), s*x, comorbidities, pre-hospital 25(OH)D level, and clinical characteristics. We reported that majority of the subjects had 25(OH)D level below 30 ng/ml, most of them were male, had diabetes, and were classified as severe. Most of the male and female subjects had 25(OH)D level below 30 ng/ml. Also, most of the subjects with pre-existing condition had 25(OH)D level below 30 ng/ml. Majority of subjects classified as severe had 25(OH)D level below 30 ng/ml. Age and 25(OH)D level were negatively related.

Although clinical trials could provide more meaningful findings as to the causation of 25(OH)D levels and COVID-19 severity, basic healthy solutions such as Vitamin D supplementation could be raised even in the community level and awareness on Vitamin D benefits in fighting infections, such as COVID-19, should be disseminated especially to the vulnerable elderly population.”

The data is likely skewed in a number of places... nonetheless, here is a government document published May 1, 2020.

Simple example of skewed data from this report: Document states 75% positive cases reported cough.

Reason this data cannot be trusted: The majority of institutions and testing centers in the United States require the patient to have ‘coughing’ as a symptom before any test can be approved.

We know from several high testing countries with some of the world’s most advanced healthcare systems, that of their fatal COVID-19 cases, as few as 40% of patients were symptomatic of a cough while in treatment.

There’s a strong correlation between skin tone, s*x and severity of illness with the COVID-19 disease that is experienced with SARS-CoV-2 viral infection.

Everyone should be aware of this information, and I’m not hearing about it enough in the news.

In the attached video, Dr John Campbell explains what this means, what we understand so far, and how we know that it’s true.

Really great interview with a Doctor in the front lines of COVID-19 response in New York.

Dr. Michelle Gordon, a general surgeon treating COVID-19 patients in Westchester, NY.
https://youtu.be/1fdGS_WrYQY

In this interview they discuss:
1. Ventilators — not one person has survived coming off the ventilators, that she’s seen — and only one that she’s heard of. They don’t know why. Their hospital usually has 4-5 ventilators but currently has 30.
2. Patient care
3. Incubation period and symptoms
4. ARDS & Cytokines storm
6. X-rays
7. Mucus and inflammatory response
8. Will doctors and nurses stay when hospitals run out of PPE

(WARNING: This podcast episode is AWESOME)
This month, one of the world’s leading virus hunters contracted COVID-19 while studying the SARS-CoV-2 virus outbreak. Still coughing and wheezing, Dr Lipkin makes an appearance for the, “This Week in Virology,” podcast.

PODCAST — THIS WEEK IN VIROLOGY: Conversation with a COVID-19 Patient, Ian Lipkin
https://youtu.be/SyIsLx4RJs8

Just as Contagion is the most accurate pandemic movie I’ve ever seen, so this Podcast makes for one of the most comprehensive and detailed accounts of the threat we now face, with COVID-19.

Dr W. Ian Lipkin is a professor at Columbia University. He served as the science consultant on the movie, Contagion, and is also known for his work on SARS and West Nile.

Still recovering from COVID-19, he coughs and wheezes in spurts while discussing:
— his own illness,
— treatments and medications,
— how the virus behaves in the body,
— surgical masks, N95 masks and respirators,
— the failing of current leadership’s response to take this more seriously, and how it will very likely result in catastrophic losses,
— ‘kill virus’ vaccines, such as the one China has begun testing,
— how some countries are flattening the curve, while others are failing...
Etc.

Ian Lipkin joins Vincent to talk about his experience as a COVID-19 patient, and issues surrounding the disease and SARS-CoV-2 including limiting transmissio...

Several countries have SUCCESSFULLY flattened the curve with RIGOROUS TESTING, self quarantines, harbor in place measures
— China, South Korea, Germany
— Italy acted too late. People partied the weekend self quarantines were “recommended”.
— Now 400-600 are dying per day, in a region comparable to the size of LA County.
— I believe the same thing happened in Oregon, this week. Oregon is only 10 days to 2 weeks behind Italy.

Disappointing to hear California say 25 million will be sick in next 8 weeks.
— The rigorous measures other countries are using to FLATTEN THE CURVE are working!
— Isn’t it better to take PROACTIVE measures and actually TRY to save people?

21/03/2020

March 20, 2020
WASHINGTON—The U.S. military said Friday it is preparing plans to take over hotels and other buildings if necessary to add to the nation’s supply of hospital rooms, part of its response to the coronavirus emergency.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/military-role-widens-in-pandemic-response-11584746488

Pentagon officials detailed the plans as they opened up the range of military capabilities and forces this week, with preparations for deploying thousands of National Guard troops, providing hospital ships and ferrying medical equipment.

The head of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers outlined plans for taking over as many as 10,000 hotel rooms, college dormitories and other spaces in New York to provide medical services to accommodate the exponential increase of virus-related hospitalizations.

Based on a request from state officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, which is coordinating the crisis response for the White House, the Corps would forge contracts with hotels, colleges and possibly sports arenas—all of which are largely empty anyway—to begin to transform them into medical facilities, Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite said.

“We would then take the building over in a period of an exceptionally short amount of days, and we would go in and turn this into an ICU-like facility,” he said.

Nurses’ stations would be built in the hallways of the empty hotels, for example, he said. Other equipment, including wireless capability to give medical staff the ability to monitor individual patients, also would be installed, he said.

The planning reflects the urgency the military has begun to bring to the issue this week as state governors and the White House scrambled to prepare for a substantial increase in the number of coronavirus cases nationwide. State and federal officials have forecast a steep demand for medical support as hospitals are expected to become overrun with patients.

As of Friday, there were nearly 17,000 cases of the virus in the U.S., contributing to more than 200 deaths. California and Washington state have seen the fastest spread, but New York has become a center of the pandemic in the U.S., with more than 4,400 cases. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been pushing the federal government and the military for assistance.

Other military capabilities were already on the way. Defense Secretary Mark Esper this week pledged two hospital ships, more than five million face masks, virus test kits and ventilators to those regions that need it, marking the first public offer of specific equipment and supplies the military could provide.

In the meantime, Pentagon officials said Friday that the National Guard already had activated hundreds more Guardsmen to help states.

A total of more than 3,300 Air and Army National Guardsmen were activated in nearly 30 states and U.S. territories as of Friday, including California and New York.

Air Force Gen. Joseph Lengyel, head of the military’s National Guard Bureau, said Thursday he expected the demand for more Guardsmen to grow rapidly across the nation.

“It’s hard to tell what the exact requirement will be, but I’m expecting tens of thousands to be used inside the states as this grows,” he said. “I think this could quickly blossom in the next couple of weeks as governors and states determine their needs and ways to use their National Guards.”

There are about 450,000 Guardsmen across the nation, most serving in a part-time capacity. Guard units also are being asked by governors to help with local and state government logistics, transportation, sanitation and sterilization and other efforts.

Some state and federal officials have suggested the Guard could back up law enforcement personnel in areas that are under severe restrictions to contain the spread of the virus, a move that could stoke public debate about the role of the military in civilian U.S. life.

Gen. Lengyel said that placing the Guard under federal control for a nationwide law enforcement function also would detract from the flexibility governors now have in using the Guard.

Sorry that I haven’t been updating. It’s very depressing news.

ITALY: Friday, March 20
+627 new deaths
+4,670 newly infected

Keep in mind, over 300 of today´s deaths occurred in Lombardía, a region of 10 million people, the same size as Los Angeles County.

What we have seen today is a result of people gathering the weekend quarantine was first enforced, two weeks ago.

As of today, all outdoor activities are to be stopped.
People will be fined, arrested.
No jogging, outdoor Sporting activities, nonessential activities.
If a graduation party is held, the police will be sent, “flamethrowers” ready.
Parks and other public gathering locations are to be closed.

Public appeal for all available medical professionals to help lessen the burden on medical staff that has been working 24/7 for a month.

17/03/2020

QUESTION:
Is it possible choosing to treat a fever that is uncomfortable, but not necessarily dangerous, with anti inflammatory drugs could actually end up contributing to more COVID19 patient deaths?

This weekend France announced that NSAIDS (like Tylenol, corticosteroids, ibuprofen or Paracetemol), could be worsening COVID19 infections and causing more people to die... BUT, doctors in the USA are continuing to include NSAIDS in their therapeutic COVID19 treatment plans.

I spent the last several hours looking into it and dug up some of the only human studies I could find relating acute, lower respiratory infection mortality to treatment involving NSAIDS/Antipyretics/Fever Reducers (such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and paracetamol). What I found was pretty consistent with the French government’s announcement.

(Pyretic/Febrile = of or relating to a fever,
Afebrile = Apyretic = no fever,
Antipyretic = fever reducer such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol)).

RESULTS:
France may be correct! THERE NEED TO BE MORE STUDIES, because, “YES,” it looks like the modern standard of care for acute, lower respiratory infections in septic patients may end up causing more people to die!!

There were plenty of animal studies, but very few human clinical studies to even explore whether lowering mid-grade fever during acute, lower respiratory infection for the sake of comfort may be the exact, wrong thing to do at a time where the human physiology knows best how to survive.

Some of the evidence supporting that, in more acute cases of viral infection like influenza, a fever might have helped the victim survive:
1. Immune system can’t fight efficiently at lower temperature. Higher temps are required for activation of some immunological response mechanisms.
2. Many virus are temperature sensitive and cannot replicate or maintain stability within the human host in the upper ranges of human pyretic temperatures (so, basically when you allow yourself to get a fever).
3. Lower temps often allow for the growth of secondary, respiratory infections which would generally not survive at higher, fever-like, temperatures.

So... I can’t draw any absolute, causative conclusions from these publications, but from the evidence thus far, you could definitively say there appears to be a link —
and that maybe we’ve been doing it wrong for awhile!

Thanks for reading!
Let me know if you have any questions,
