Background:
My name is Wilk Wilkinson. I'm a husband and father living in the rural Midwest. I have worked in trucking and transportation for more than two decades -- my entire professional life.
At the start of the pandemic, I began a podcast called "Derate The Hate" because I wanted to better attitudes and help bring our divided country back together.
I didn't know if anyone would listen, but I felt I had something to say.
Since then, "Derate The Hate" has grown beyond my wildest dreams. It has brought me together with many incredible Americans who were concerned about the same things I was, even when we didn’t see things the same way.
From now through Election Day, I plan to publish a series of short clips with a handful of the amazing guests who have joined me on "Derate The Hate". There are ten weeks between now and November 5, so I plan to highlight ten of these guests.
Each week, one new guest.I hope these clips inspire you to reconnect with people in your life who have been ripped away by our toxic politics.
It doesn't need to be this way, even in the middle of a heated national election.Over the next 10 weeks, I invite you to share any of these clips that resonate with members of your network.
Thank you for tuning in.

What comes to mind when you think of a debate? You're probably seeing two people who don't agree with each other are presenting arguments and making refutations, hopefully coming to a consensus. Well, the National Speech and Debate Association has recently identified a problem within their debates. On a topic about civil disobedience, apparently students were coming across other students who didn't share the same views as them. The reason I do debate,
is because I enjoy hearing different points of views. It helped me grow as a person. It's the reason why I'm able to hold stable conversations without getting upset whenever someone brings up a point of view I don't agree with. See, what the National Speech and Debate Association is doing is they're not only ruining high school debates, but they're setting up their students for failure. Because in the real world, whether it be in the workplace or at a family dinner,
You're going to have to have conversations with people who don't agree with you. The world is not an echo chamber. That is right. That is exactly right. The world is not an echo chamber. Oh, nailed it. The world is not an echo chamber. And anytime, whether it be the National Speech and Debate Association, or if we're doing it to ourselves.
If we stick ourselves within an echo chamber, we are doing ourselves a huge disservice. We are setting ourselves up for failure. We have to listen to other points of view. We have to be able to have a civil conversation with those people with whom we disagree.
Is that simple...

You know, I am so glad you brought that up because one of the greatest casualties of this identitarianism, this identity politics thing that I talk about so often, but it's not just me. I mean, people are really waking up to the fact that this thing is just flat out poison, right? I mean, it can't... So this... As an individual, we become lost.
when we are placed within these boxes, right? We are put into a group, we are put into a box, then a label is put on that box, and then all of a sudden people are thinking, well, this is obviously a monolith. Everybody within this box, everybody that is stuck inside this particular group must think the same way. And we as individuals then become lost. We become invisible. Our true voice.
The voice that we want to let out becomes lost and muddled up in all that rest of that crap. And we've got to be really, really careful about that. Because the worst thing that you can do to an individual is make them feel invisible. Make them feel like their voice does not matter. That's something we've got to watch out for.

Have you ever stopped to really think about what the root cause of racism is? Politicians at every level, and those in the media, now more than ever before, speak in platitudes about race, finding new ways to interject race and racism into every story and topic, but do you ever hear them present real solutions that speak to the root cause of racism? The answer, in most cases, is probably NO.
When I was a child, a young man, and even to this day, I find great passion in befriending and just listening to the stories of, and finding wisdom in, those older and more seasoned in the ways of the world than me. Whether it was listening to my parents and their friends talking about growing up in our little mid-western towns, the widow on my paper route who had long since lost her husband and had few visitors, or the old man at the end of the bar that ran out of people to talk to, I loved it all and still do.
Doing the Derate the Hate podcast affords me opportunities to meet and speak with people that I may never otherwise encounter. For this I could not be more grateful. When I get the opportunity to speak with a true legend like Daryl Davis, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. If you do not know who Daryl Davis is, you need to stop what you’re doing and listen to every word he says in this incredible conversation. Daryl Davis is what many would call a superhero in the ranks of race relations. Do you want to know what a man who’s devoted a large portion of his adult life to converting white supremacists says the root cause of racism is? Don’t miss this conversation…

One of the biggest problems I see in society today is that toxicity prevails when civility is needed. Nowhere is this more evident than on social media. Does anyone believe that a meaningful conversation that produces a positive result can start on a foundation of toxicity? I’m not saying that it is impossible, but I’ll go so far as to say that it is very unlikely. Take our very own federal government as an example. Nowhere on the planet is there a larger group of overpaid mudslingers that do less good for those they supposedly represent. Utah’s Governor Spencer Cox said it well when he recently said, “I think politics is an embarrassment to our country right now.” I long for the day when politicians again learn There really is magic in a collaborative conversation.
