New Delhi: India and Indian enterprises are continuously outshining their global counterparts in exploring and deploying artificial intelligence (AI) as per an AI adoption report referred to by Sandip Patel, Managing Director, India/South Asia, IBM at the Mint AI for Business Summit. In his opening address, Patel said that AI technology is at an inflection point, transitioning from assisting businesses to becoming a foundational technology.

“According to the AI adoption report, about 59% of IT professionals at large organizations said that they have actively deployed AI. Similarly, about six out of 10 IT professionals report that their companies are actively deploying and implementing generative AI solutions and about 34% of others are exploring it in some way, shape or form," Patel added.

While raising a question about why PoCs (proofs of concept) in AI aren’t scaling, Patel said that despite AI deployment, only 54% of the pilots and PoCs make it to production. He then pointed out four key categories—customer experience, horizontal functions, IT processes, and core business operations—attention to which can help scale AI to production while addressing challenges such as bias, data quality and security.

He also discussed IBM’s contribution and investments in AI through the Watson.AI platform and its components designed for building AI applications, data organization, governance, process orchestration, and IT automation.

Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to the creation of ChatGPT and other chatbots that can allow users to have sophisticated human like conversations.
Using deep fake technology, AI software can create an interactive virtual representation of a deceased person by using their digital content such as photographs, emails, and videos.

Help or hindrance? :-

Digital ghosts could be a comfort to the bereaved by helping them to reconnect with lost loved ones. They could provide an opportunity for the user to say some things or ask questions they never got a chance to when the now deceased person was alive.
Research suggests that deathbots should be used only as a temporary aid to mourning to avoid potentially harmful emotional dependence on the technology.
AI ghosts could be harmful for people's mental health by interfering with the grief process.

Chatbot horror :-

There are also risks that these ghost-bots could say harmful things or give bad advice to someone in mourning. Similar generative software such as ChatGPT chatbots are already widely criticised for giving misinformation to users.
Imagine if the AI technology went rogue and started to make inappropriate remarks to the user - a situation experienced by journalist Kevin Roose in 2023 when a Bing chatbot tried to get him to leave his wife. It would be very hurtful if a deceased father was conjured up as an AI ghost by a son or daughter to hear comments that they weren't loved or liked or weren't their father's favourite.

Forgetting is healthy :-

This latest tech says a lot about our digital culture of infinite possibilities with no limits.
Data can be stored on the cloud indefinitely and everything is retrievable and nothing truly deleted or destroyed. Forgetting is an important element of healthy grief but in order to forget, people will need to find new and meaningful ways of remembering the deceased person.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have garnered increasing attention in recent years. Today, the pivotal role of technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in achieving these goals is gaining prominence, sparking deeper discussions. As the world strides towards sustainable development, smart cities are embracing cyberinfrastructure to foster holistic economic growth, enhance the quality of life, and optimise resource management.
Innovative applications of AI, from converting waste into valuable resources to reshaping societal perceptions of resource utilisation, are unravelling the complexities surrounding environmental issues.
Central to this journey is the evolution of waste management, emphasising the imperative to minimise landfill-bound waste through the principles of a circular economy - reduce, reuse, and recycle. This necessitates innovative approaches from environmental service providers in recycling waste materials.

Innovation and investment serve as catalysts for economic prosperity worldwide, but realising their full potential requires conducive public policies. Establishing a supportive regulatory framework, simplifying bureaucratic processes, and safeguarding intellectual property rights are pivotal in fostering innovation-friendly environments. Additionally, investing in STEAM education, research infrastructure, and promoting collaboration between academia and industry accelerates innovation ecosystems.
In conclusion, the intersection of AI, waste management, and sustainable development offers a pathway towards a more resilient and prosperous future. Embracing innovation, fostering collaboration, and implementing conducive public policies are essential to realising this vision. By harnessing the transformative power of technology and sustainability, we can pave the way for a more equitable, prosperous, and environmentally sustainable world.

Addressing the Annual Conference of Association of Physicians of India (APICON-24) in New Delhi, Dr Ajay Kumar, renowned Urologist & Past President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) dispelled fears of artificial intelligence (AI) displacing doctors, instead highlighting its potential for collaboration.

Dr Kumar envisions a future "Trimurti" of medicine – a three-pronged approach combining Allopathy, Ayurveda, and other complementary practices, all guided by AI. He believes that “Trimurti” (Allopathy, Ayush & CAM) shall be healer of mind, soul, and body under the influence of AI, illuminating the potential for a harmonious coalescence of tradition and innovation in healthcare. CAM stands for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He called it Vision 2047.

He emphasised that AI is not a threat, but a powerful tool poised to revolutionise healthcare delivery, suggesting the doctors to embrace AI. He also shed light on the imminent transformation of the healthcare landscape with the inevitable integration of AI.

According to Dr Kumar, AI is poised to reinforce healthcare delivery worldwide, with its influence extending to disease detection, diagnosis, robotics in surgery, drug discovery, remote patient monitoring, and personalized treatment approaches.

Dr Rajesh Upadhyay, Organising Secretary of APICON-2024, said, “Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming every aspect of healthcare, from diagnostics to treatment. At APICON, we have seen how physicians from across the country have deliberated upon how AI can empower them. Imagine leveraging AI for faster, more accurate diagnoses, or even personalising treatment plans for individual patients. This conference has brought together the medical minds who have unravelled the potential of AI and how it has revolutionized patient care and equipped doctors with the tools to excel in this new era of medicine.”

In a bold declaration, Dr Kumar emphasised, "AI may not replace doctors, but doctors who do not know how to use AI will be replaced for sure."

12/03/2024

China is testing an AI assistant for neurosurgeons at seven hospitals in Beijing and other cities in coming months, one of many initiatives the government is backing to try and harness the technology. A Hong Kong-based agency under the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Monday introduced an AI model based on Meta Platform's Llama 2.0. Researchers trained and fine-tuned the model with papers, medical journals and manuals to act as a surgery consultant of sorts for doctors, said Liu Hongbin, the center's executive director.
State organs are joining private Chinese firms in developing homegrown AI in the mold of OpenAI's ChatGPT.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences' TaiChu model was among the first batch of services that won approval for public rollout in August. The technology is regarded as harboring the potential to revolutionize fields from diagnostics to personal consultations.

The Hong Kong-based Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics employed about 100 graphics processor units to train its healthcare-focused model, split evenly between Nvidia Corp.'s A100 high-end chips and Huawei Technologies Co.'s Ascend 910B, researchers told reporters Monday.
They hope the AI bot - dubbed the CARES Copilot 1.0 - will answer questions with citations based on more than a million academic records. It should also be able to process diagnostic data such as MRI, ultrasound or CT scans, as well as images, text and audio, they said.

11/03/2024

A sensational story about the Israeli prime minister's "psychiatrist" exploded online, but it was AI-generated, originating on one of hundreds of websites researchers warn are churning out tech-enabled fiction masquerading as news.
Propaganda-spewing websites have typically relied on armies of writers, but generative artificial intelligence tools now offer a significantly cheaper and faster way to fabricate content that is often hard to decipher from authentic information. Hundreds of AI-powered sites mimicking news outlets have cropped up in recent months, fueling an explosion of false narratives -- about everything from war to politicians –- that researchers say is stoking alarm in a year of high-stake elections around the israeli Prime Minister's psychiatrist commits su***de," still tops the list of "popular articles" highlighted on Global Village Space, a Pakistani digital outlet, after it made an online splash in November with baseless claims about a su***de note blaming Netanyahu.
A "substantial portion" of the site's content, including this article, appears to be scraped from mainstream sources using AI tools, according to an analysis by NewsGuard, a US-based research organization that tracks misinformation. After scanning the site for error messages specific to content produced by AI chatbots, NewsGuard said it found significant similarities between the yarn about Netanyahu's "psychiatrist" to a fictitious 2010 article on a satirical website.

These websites underscore the potential of AI tools -- chatbots even more than photo generators and voice cloners -- to turbocharge misinformation while further eroding trust in traditional media, researchers say. Their polarizing content, which could whip up turmoil and sway political beliefs, is meant to lure eyeballs and capture ad revenue. The revenue model for many of these websites is programmatic advertising, which means that top brands may unintentionally end up supporting them, while it may be difficult for governments to clamp down for fear of breaching free speech protections, researchers say.

03/03/2024

For tech companies, artificial general intelligence (AGI) is the next big aim. While the current AI models are far from reaching AGI levels, the Nvidia CEO has said that some form of this type of AI can be achieved in the next five years.
Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, mentioned during an economic forum at Stanford University that artificial general intelligence (AGI) might become a reality within five years, depending on its definition.
Huang acknowledged that AI has made strides in passing various tests, hinting that within half a decade, it could excel in a broad array of assessments.
“If I gave an AI ... every single test that you can possibly imagine, you make that list of tests and put it in front of the computer science industry, and I'm guessing in five years time, we'll do well on every single one,” said Huang.
Huang also noted that there is a need for more chip factories to support the AI industry's growth. He noted that additional fabs are needed, underscoring the ongoing improvement in chip efficiency over time, which could mitigate the necessity for a vast number of chips.

At one of the world’s largest technology conferences, whether it was on the main stage, its side panels, or at the dozens of glitzy, towering company booths, there was one term on everybody’s lips: artificial intelligence (AI).
Yet alongside that excitement, there are also growing concerns among experts that these technologies could exacerbate inequities dividing the world.
udice is being programmed into the technologies that are being deployed in our communities. And these biases must be addressed,” Tometi said at the summit.

The social justice leader shared the example of predictive policing tools, which have been especially harmful to people of colour, particularly Black people in the United States, she said.

According to a report in MIT Technology Review, there are broadly two types of these tools currently in use in the US.

The first, tools that use location-based algorithms to predict where crime is likely to happen. The second, tools that draw on data about people, such as their age or gender, to predict who may get involved in crime.

According to a study by accounting behemoth Deloitte, smart technologies like AI could help cities reduce crime by between 30 and 40 percent.

Indian-origin college student Akul Dhawan, who was found dead near his US university on January 20, froze to death near a club that denied him entry during a night out with friends.

Dhawan had been out drinking with his friends at a club close to the campus that day, said a report in The Kansas City Star. According to the surveillance video, he and his friends had visited the Canopy Club that day but were denied entry at around 11.30 pm when they tried to re-enter the club. The paper quoted investigators as saying that Dhawan tried to enter the club “multiple times, but was repeatedly denied by staff,” and that he turned down two rideshare vehicles that were called for him.

One of his friends reached out to the campus police at 1.23 am on the same day after calls to him went unanswered through the night. Police said that they searched the premises and contacted his friends, but did not find him.

He was found at 11 am the next day, “laying on concrete steps” behind a building at four minutes walking distance from the club. The temperatures in the area reached around -2 degrees Celcius at that time, said the report.

The coroner’s office said that Dhawan was pronounced dead on the spot, adding that “acute alcohol intoxication and prolonged exposure to extremely cold temperatures, significantly contributed to his death,” reported The Kansas City Star.

AI-powered ‘answer engines’ have arrived. A few days ago, The Wall Street Journal reported how new companies like ArcSearch and Consensus are changing the rules of web search as we knew it. As compared to search engines that at best threw up a few links to relevant articles, these new AI-run search engines not only provide the most relevant information on a topic, but also intelligent summaries of various articles. So the collation of knowledge is no longer a difficult task.

Until now, individuals were judged by the knowledge they acquired. Our educational system gauged how much of it a student has gathered and how much a test-taker can regurgitate during exam time. Whether it was the spelling of a word or the date when a particular war started, what mattered most was whether the student had an exact memory of it to summon at a particular moment. Even at higher levels of education, what mattered most was how much one could remember of what was taught.

A new Japanese flagship H3 rocket lifted off from a space station in southwestern Japan on Saturday, successfully reaching a planned trajectory and releasing one of the two payloads in a key second test flight a year after its failed debut launch.

The H3 rocket blasted off from a launch pad at the Tanegashima Space Center on time Saturday morning, two days after its originally scheduled liftoff which was delayed due to bad weather.

The launch is closely watched as a test for Japan's space development after H3 failed in its debut flight last March. JAXA and its main contractor Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have been developing H3 as a successor to its current mainstay, H-2A, which is set to retire after two more flights.
H3 project team members have been under heavy pressure to have the rocket return to flight. The H3 No. 2 rocket was decorated with thousands of stickers carrying cheering messages sent from well-wishers around the country.
Saturday's success is a major boost for Japan's space program as the country struggles to stay competitive in the global space race.

H3 is designed to carry larger payloads than H-2A at much lower costs to be globally competitive.

Expectations were high following a recent streak of successes. JAXA last month made a historic precision moon landing with a spacecraft that had been launched from the H-2A rocket, days after the 48th H-2A rocket successfully placed a spy satellite into its planned orbit.

15/02/2024

A panel consisting of three union ministers is scheduled to convene a meeting with protesting farmer leaders in Chandigarh on Thursday for further discussions amidst the ongoing standoff between the demonstrators and security forces at the Punjab-Haryana border.
Meanwhile, as of Thursday, there are no reports of clashes between farmers and Haryana security personnel at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points.

Farmers protest Top Highlights:

* On Wednesday, a collective statement was released by several public intellectuals and artists in solidarity with the joint initiative by workers and farmers for a sectoral industrial strike and Grameen Bharat Bandh on February 16. Endorsed by 34 individuals, the statement urges people from diverse backgrounds to offer their full support to this significant endeavour by the farmers and workers.
* Arjun Munda, the Union agriculture minister involved in negotiations with farmer leaders, appealed to the protesters for cooperation and open communication to prevent inconvenience to the general public. He emphasized that in the process of drafting new laws, there are numerous factors to be taken into account, which the government wishes to discuss with the farmer organisations.
* Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor remarked on Wednesday that he does not believe the China border is fortified to the extent of the national capital. He emphasized that it is the democratic right of farmers to protest and have their voices heard in the national capital.
* Akhilesh Yadav criticised the BJP government for what he termed as "deception" towards farmers. He pointed out the irony of the government honouring the late farmer leader Chaudhary Charan Singh with the Bharat Ratna while simultaneously resorting to tear gas shelling and lathi charging against protesting farmers, which he deemed as an exhibition of dictatorship.

14/02/2024

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was on a three-day visit to India recently. On the final day, at Microsoft's massive facility in Hyderabad, he spoke about a range of things including his ten years as Microsoft CEO. Nadella completed 10 years as Microsoft CEO earlier this month.
When asked about analysts calling him the most impactful tech executive since Steve Jobs, Nadella said that every 10 years, something very big happens in our industry and that he had the privilege to be part of four of these technological waves: PC client-server, web/internet, mobile cloud, and now AI. He added that what will really matter is our ability, long before it's conventional wisdom, to have a real point of view on what the arc of technology is. And then to go all in and build something of value. Even as we are doing this, it's also important to be grounded. After all, we are Microsoft.
"Microsoft exists because of its sense of purpose and mission. Here we are in the Microsoft campus, talking to our folks on why we innovate, how we innovate, how do we meet unmet, unarticulated needs of customers, curate those continuously. So, I go back to those pillars of sense of purpose and mission and culture, and a real sense of where the arc of technology is, and not rest on what happened before," he went on to add.
Microsoft last week ended with a market capitalisation of $3.125 trillion, the highest for any company ever, Barron's reported. The company's market value topped the previous record set by Apple, which reached $3.09 trillion in July 2023. Apple ended Friday (February 9) with a market cap of $2.916 trillion. Over the past 12 months, Microsoft shares have soared 60 per cent, largely thanks to the enthusiasm about its artificial intelligence software.
