🎙️ Recently on my radio show "Your Baby and You," Nurse Nsima Umoh and I discussed the low uptake of modern Family Planning methods among women in Akwa Ibom state. Only 14.9% use these methods, far below the 30% target for 2030 set by the Federal Ministry of Health.

Ignorance, myths, and religious beliefs are barriers impacting population control and maternal/child health. We highlighted the Role of Birth Spacing in Family Balance and stressed the Importance of Family Planning Services.

CRITICAL REFLECTIONS ON POLYGAMY IN THE AFRICAN CONTEXT

Polygamy is a phenomenon often associated with African people. In almost all African societies, polygamy is an acceptable and valid form of marriage in fact, monogamy has been associated with people of lower social status. Proponents of polygamy have claimed that the more wives a man has, the more children he is likely to have, and the more children, the greater the chances that the family will enjoy immortality

Juxtaposed with current realities, where studies have found more social problems, associated with polygamy as against monogamy, the question now is, should we as Africans discourage the practice of polygamy?

However, there are those with the school of thoughts that polygamy as an African culture is suitable for Africans. These argue that it is the adoption of Western Civilization mixed with our African culture, that is partially responsible for the many social issues associated with our society today.
