How a Bill Becomes a Law in New York State: A legislator has a new policy idea (note: this idea can come from anyone, even the constituents!), the idea is then drafted into a Bill, the Bill undergoes the committee process, the New York State Assembly and Senate each vote to pass the Bill, and the New York State Governor must sign the Bill for it to finally become a Law.

Get to know Bill S4844/A6512! This is the same Bill with two names because it has to go through two separate paths: one in the NY Assembly and one in the NY Senate! Both the Senate and Assembly must vote to pass this Bill. The Bill is currently in committee in both the Senate and Assembly! We’ll share more on that later, so stay tuned!
