As in many countries, cultural policy in South Africa has increasingly emphasised the important economic roles of the cultural and creative industries.

Research by the South African Cultural Observatory and others indicates the sector contributes nearly 3% to South Africa’s gross domestic product.

It accounts directly and indirectly for nearly 900,000 jobs. In a country struggling with high unemployment and inequality, this economic benefit is an important part of justifying public spending on events like the National Arts Festival.

As people can expect to live longer, they must save more for retirement so that they don’t outlive their savings. This is particularly true given that the pensions landscape worldwide has undergone some major changes.

In the past, governments and employers provided retirement income for individuals through government social security benefits and employment-based retirement funds. Because of increasing life expectancies, pension plans that guaranteed a retirement benefit to employees are now rare.

Planning for retirement is important because it will help you build the nest egg you’ll need to financially sustain your retirement years.

We used radiocarbon dating; dating the mounds, we reasoned, would allow us to see when minerals that were stored in the mounds were flushed to the groundwater.

The tests revealed far more than we expected: Namaqualand’s heuweltjies, it turns out, are the world’s oldest inhabited termite mounds. Some date as far back as between 34,000 and 13,000 years.

The oldest previously known inhabited mounds were 4,000 years old (from a different termite species from Brazil) and 2,300 years old (from central Congo).

Africa is home to some of the most amazing and beautiful, but also dangerous, snakes on the planet. Tiny saw-scaled vipers cause potentially lethal bleeding problems. Large-bodied puff adders and spitting cobras have venoms that destroy flesh via necrosis.

And the venom of green and black mambas can rapidly cause death by paralysing the victim’s respiratory muscles. Most research on snakebite treatments has been focused on keeping the patient alive. But snakebite also leaves about 400,000 snakebite survivors permanently scarred or disabled.

The World Health Organization estimates that 1.8 million to 2.7 million people are envenomed by snakes annually, resulting in upwards of 138,000 death

The spike in cyberattacks leading to system breaches and data leaks has compelled a review of access control strategies. The question has shifted from whether cyberattacks will occur to when and how they will happen.

Passwords and usernames remain a key point of vulnerability as they are still used for access and authentication. Too many people use weak and recycled passwords. A report by cybersecurity firm Sophos found that the “number of cyber attacks on businesses in South Africa, Kenya and Zambia increased by 76% in 2023”.

If you type the term “password cyberattack” into Google News, the results will show just how often cyber criminals are getting hold of important data

In recent years, more people in African countries have been able to access the internet than ever before. This growth has been driven by improved telecommunication infrastructure and the rising adoption of mobile devices.

At the same time there’s been a worrying democratic decline in some countries and regions, most markedly north Africa. This is marked by an increase in military regimes, a rise in violent conflicts and growing public dissatisfaction with political systems.

It’s a bumper year for elections on the continent: by the end of 2024, 20 countries ought to have gone to the polls to vote in national elections

Those features included the shapes and sizes of the areas where the muscles would have attached to the bones. Musankwa is only the fourth dinosaur to be named from Zimbabwe and the first named from the mid-Zambezi Basin (north Zimbabwe, southern Zambia) for 50 years.

Although the material is incomplete, its close relatives were large, bipedal herbivores (plant-eating creatures that walked on two legs) with long necks, small, lightly built skulls, pillar-like hindlimbs, and sturdy tails.

Baobabs are a remarkable keystone species, capable of supporting a wide diversity of animals for food and shelter. They can reach huge dimensions (depending on the species) in both height and diameter. The largest species can tower above the understorey vegetation.

When you encounter a big African baobab on its own, it really is like “Home Tree” in the movie Avatar, not only because of its size, but also because it supports such a huge variety of life.

There are eight species of baobab in the world, and they have a surprising distribution. Six are found in Madagascar, an island in the Indian Ocean

We analysed the likely development of energy systems in Africa from 2020 to 2050, looking at energy demand, the changing use of land and its impact on energy and how the warming climate will affect water availability.

The continent of Africa still uses 80% less electricity than the global average per capita. But given the projected population growth and increase in living standards, electricity demand in Africa will rise. This means new power generation infrastructure will be needed.

Our research found that wind and solar projects will be more cost effective than hydropower by 2030. This means that only 40% to 68% of the planned hydropower capacity in Africa will be economically attractive.

Across the African continent, more than 300 new hydropower projects are planned to meet the growing demand for electricity.

Fact-checkers in Africa are using various digital media tools to counter disinformation tactics, which can mislead voters, destabilize governments, and impact public services and economies.

How are they raising awareness and combatting the increasing usage of misinformation and disinformation to manipulate elections and social governance?

Al Ahly has reached the finals multiple times and boasts 11 titles, making it the most successful club in the competition’s history. Similarly, Esperance has secured the title multiple times.

These successes have not occurred by accident. The two clubs have financial muscle, effective management systems and large fan bases.

In 2011, before her father’s absence, Selmor joined forces with her sister, Sandra, to bring their version of Tuku Music to the stage.

The two siblings entertained fans with Mtukudzi’s yesteryear popular tunes and signature moves. They worked together until Sandra’s relocation to the UK at the end of 2023.

“I aspire to create quality music that touches hearts and transcends borders. Tuku’s legacy isn’t static; it’s a river that flows. I want my music to inspire others – to dance, reflect, and connect. When listeners feel the rhythm, they’re part of this evolving legacy,” Mtukudzi said.

Growing up immersed in Zimbabwean music, Selmor Mtukudzi blends its new and old sounds. She's also committed to authentically reflecting her father’s

While some political parties propose expanding the grants system, others propose increasing the amounts.

On the campaign trail, President Cyril Ramaphosa hinted at the possibility of a loss of grants if another party came to power.

This was condemned by some parties and commentators as “fearmongering” and taking advantage of voter fears about their livelihoods, especially among rural voters.

Social grants to reduce poverty feature prominently in the campaign promises of political parties in South Africa’s 2024 national and provincial gener

The Sahara desert expanded and grasslands, forests and lakes favoured by humans disappeared. Humans were forced to retreat to the mountains, the oases, and the Nile valley and delta.

As a relatively large and dispersed population was squeezed into smaller and more fertile areas, it needed to innovate new ways to produce food and organise society. Soon after, one of the world’s first great civilisations emerged – ancient Egypt.

This rapid urbanisation has been poorly managed. The result is crumbling public infrastructure, poor sanitation, poverty, and shortages of employment opportunities, food, social services, housing and public transport.

These challenges combine to make the city susceptible to criminal activities. Organised crime and violent conflicts are a public safety and security challenge.

The 280 kilometre long, man-made Lake Kariba is part of the Kariba Dam, which was built between 1955 and 1959 in the Zambezi river basin between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The dam provides hydroelectric power to the Kariba north power station on the Zambian side and Kariba south power station on the Zimbabwean side. These provide most of the electricity for the two nations.

The remote Kariba Dam, about five hours’ drive from Zimbabwe’s capital city, Harare, and a three hour drive from Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, also supports fisheries, conservation, tourism and recreation.

Water levels at Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe have dropped dramatically because of the latest El Niño drought.

It’s also important to remember that this won’t be a one-off discussion. Adolescents undergo constant development, facing new questions and challenges as they grow.

“In the past, we saw mainly women coming with their children for routine immunisation. We have seen that women are vulnerable to violence and bullying, particularly in the home, leading some to miss immunisation schedules. The campaign is bearing fruit as more men are coming with their children.

Most of them were not aware of the importance of these vaccines. The uptake of routine immunisation by fathers is very encouraging. We have been receiving an average of 50 fathers a week and, hopefully, more men will get involved.”

Trained by Island Hospice and Healthcare, the Zimbabwean NGO that was established as Africa's first hospice, Muyambo specialises in care for home-based patients, supporting nurses and doctors working in local hospitals.

And with Zimbabwe confronting a rising exodus of health care professionals, her role is only growing in importance. Since February 2021, the country has lost more than 4,000 health workers to an accelerating brain drain, including more than 1,700 registered nurses.

In Dangamvura, Area 14, eastern Zimbabwe's Mutare city, Ngonidzashe Muyambo, 36, is known as more than a community health worker (CHW)

The owner's personal details and location are also recorded. Felix administers the jab, and that record is added to the dog's profile.

Helping vaccinators like Felix keep tabs on which dogs are vaccinated and which dogs are at risk is vital, both if a rabies outbreak occurs, and during the yearly canine vaccination campaign.

On a typical day, Godbless Felix, a rabies vaccinator, enters a home accompanied by a data collector and instructs the owner on how to restrain

Poverty, air and noise pollution, insecurity, heightened criminality and environmental degradation are others.

Climate change is also causing rising sea levels, flooding, heatwaves, more intense droughts, crop failures and famines that affect residents of urban areas across Nigeria.

All these pressures, combined with poor planning, make life difficult in the country’s cities. One of the tools to deal with unsustainable urbanisation is family planning.

In my study I explored how family planning policy and urban development programmes in Nigeria were linked between 2000 and 2020.

As the mass killings were happening, the international community stood by in a stupor, even though the nations of the world had a legal and moral obligation to intervene in cases of genocide. The United Nations also had a responsibility to maintain international peace and security.

To its credit, the United Nations had already put in place a peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (Unamir). It was established in 1993 to support the Arusha accords, which aimed at ending the civil war in Rwanda.

As the world marks the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi ethnic group in Rwanda, it is important to understand

Since the 1960s, Ghana has been getting warmer, with temperatures going up by about 1°C – a little over 0.2°C every ten years. There are more really hot days now, with temperatures over 35°C, and this is happening 13% more often each year.

The amount of rain that falls can differ from one year to the next. But since the 1960s, there has been less rain overall, with about 2.4% less every ten years, although this is highly variable across the country’s agroecological zones.
