Most moms I know wish they had time to read more.
I am one of them. 📚

Some of the best advice I have ever heard to address this was from a podcast with Sarah Mackenzie. She said something along the lines of “Never discount middle grade books.” Books written for kids 8-12. They pack everything you need for a good story without the excessive length. Conquering these books creates momentum.

Since we moved in 2024, it has been particularly hard for me to make time to get back into reading my own books. I was struggling trying to catch up to my previous reading level by grabbing hefty social psych books, only to find it was a huge slog and I need to build up to that again.

So I humbled myself and grabbed something light. A book I have never read, but that was on my childhood list…Hatchet.

Since, I have finally found my flow of reading again and I have gotten back into the habit.

When reading feels hard…grab a middle grade book you *should* have read in the past. Read a little everyday so you maintain the habit. Be gentle with yourself. Then move up from there.

“They are so well behaved!” Hits me differently. We got that today.

My ego wants to say:
“Wow, look how amazing of a parent I am, yes they are!”

But my informed brain says:
“Well-behaved children are not the mark of health.”

We as parents should be very wary of attaching to this phrase. While it is a compliment in our culture and very well intended, “good” behavior is not the mark of a well adjusted child.

I would RATHER have, “I am so glad your children feel safe to be themselves around you.” But I digress because people don’t generally talk like that. 😆

All that to say, if you have a spirited kid (which I do but she was feelin’ chill today), and they are acting up, it’s not the mark of ill health or “bad” parenting. Good healthy kids sometimes act up too.

Sometimes I feel like I don’t really fit in on social media. Like this account getting big was a fluke and somehow slipped past the “higher ups.”

I don’t have the “cute mom” vibes. In fact, my disposition is not naturally optimistic and I am one of those people that has to consciously work on having a good mood each morning. I am highly sensitive, I cringe at the word “influencer” and I always second guess my stories & posts.

But I still show up because I do enjoy this creative medium. I do hope it touches some people out there in some positive way. I hope my family will look back and know I did my best to leave the world kinder place.

I am somewhere between Little House on the Prairie meets suburban living, while enjoying a round of golf every once in a while. I’ll take bushcraft classes, thrift for treasures and forage for berries but you could still find me genuinely enjoying getting dressed up for fancy steak dinner and a night out. There is no box here. I’m kinda crunchy, kinda not, but more so am.

Anyway, if you’ve made it this far. Hi 👋🏼
