Hi Everyone

You might have guessed from the title of this episode that we have decided to step back from the podcast for a while and take a much needed break.

We both have a lot going on in our personal and professional lives and feel we need to take a break from the podcast while we get things in order.

But worry not as this isn’t goodbye. We are still very passionate about our honest conversations when it comes to living life sustainably. We have lots planned for future episodes and will continue to work behind the scenes to create content that is empowering and educational to you.

We will continue to post content on social media and will hopefully work on a few challenges that we have set ourselves including the declutter and selling on eBay challenge from the uprising of second hand fashion episode as well as the vegan chocolate cake challenge from our episode with Jen the vegan chef, so stay tuned for those delights!

We have also loved reading all of your comments of support for the podcast, how you have been sharing it with likeminded people and even letting our guests know that you heard them speak on the podcast and now follow them too!

We absolutely adore this amazing community that we have built over the last few months and hope to continue reaching even more amazing people in the future.

So for now, keep doing your bit for the planet and we will see you real soon!

Amy and Sophie 💚 x

This is a picture of Jens amazing vegan gluten free chocolate cake that we spoke about in Episode 10! Some of Jens tips for vegan baking:
“It’s actually cheaper than normal baking! No dairy products, no butter, the price of butter has increased so much! You can just use vegetable oil, no solid fats are necessary for the cakes! You don’t use any eggs, you just need a raising agent, baking soda or self raising flour. They also work exactly the same with gluten free flours!

There are so many amazing people out there who have blogs, websites and social media accounts, Miss Cupcake and The Domestic Gothess have some AMAZING recipes, The Loopy Whisk, they have the BEST vegan gluten free chocolate cake in the world.. I’d make this over a normal chocolate cake. There is no way anyone could tell me it's vegan or gluten free cake!”

This picture is that cake! Would you believe it? Sophie and I have been challenged to a bake off which we will do and post soon 🤭😍

We ask all of our podcast guests what gives them hope and this was Jens answer. We really love how Jen is promoting the positives of social media, as it really does help so many people on their eco journeys by providing online communities and groups as well as helping to promote zero waste/sustainable business owners! It’s not all bad! 😊💚

In episode 10 we ask zero waste, vegan chef and baker Jen her top tips for cooking vegan food. Jen recommends companies like, Hello Fresh, Gousto and Green Chef, even though they might be controversial on the plastic waste they have SO many amazing vegan choices as well as being amazing for limiting food waste. These recipe boxes are a really good way to teach yourself how to cook vegan meals! The Instructions are amazing, it’ll give you comfort and confidence AND these companies are actually listening and getting better at reducing the plastic.

If you’re more confident, the person that got Jen absolutely loving vegan food is this blog: Lazy Cat Kitchen. Jen says her recipes are OUTSTANDING, especially the pumpkin curry, Jen ate it for like 4 days. It’s the best thing to do after halloween! Lazy Cat Kitchen does very easy to follow recipes, not too many complex ingredients and if you message her she will get back to you and give you hints and tips and alternative ingredients if you can't find what she has suggested. You don’t have to go out and buy 1000 new things!

In episode 10 we chat to the amazing Jen. Jen has worked as a chef for 21 years including working for supermarkets creating products for their own label luxury desserts. Jen shared her experience of the product development of these desserts and assures us that consumer feedback is read and listened to! This is amazing to hear from the manufacturing perspective that consumers really can push for change. We DO have an impact with what we say! So if you don’t already, comment on supermarket social media pages and ask for more vegan options, dairy free options, gluten free options and so on!!

Episode 9. The Uprising of Second Hand Fashion

During the episode, we talk about our favourite second hand finds.

Sophie found her favourite jumper in a kilo sale. She describes it as “an old man’s jumper” and loves how unique it is.

Amy was delighted to find her branded winter coat after searching on Depop for it. She paid half price for it! Bargain!

What is your favorite second hand find?

Episode 9. The Uprising of Second Hand Fashion

Fast fashion causes 10% of all of the global emissions and it's the second largest user of the world's water supply.

It’s quite shocking to think just how much energy and water goes into making clothing.

One cotton t-shirt uses around 1700 litres of water. This is everything from growing the cotton crop, to cleaning the fibres and the dying process.

The water is rarely treated before it is returned to the main supply, so there is a whole host of bleach and other nasty chemicals that are wreaking havoc on our marine life.

This is why second hand is so beneficial. Giving a second life reduced the need for all that energy and water to be used.

It is also great to use our spending power to deliver the message to the big brands that things need to change and we want them to do more to protect our planet and the people who work for them!

Episode 9. The Uprising of Second Hand Fashion

A few of our favourite second hand apps and stores to shop for preloved items.

Depop: Great for those one of kind vintage pieces and unique handmade fashion.

Freegle: Find free items in your area from local people.

Ebay: Bid or buy second hand items from people all over the country.

Vinted: Like ebay, vinted is a place to shop for second hand items no longer wanted by their owner.

Facebook Marketplace: Local sellers of all things second hand and unwanted.

Oxfam Online Shop: support a worth while charity and give clothing a second life.

Episode 9. The Uprising of Second Hand Fashion

Jane Fonda is a true legend in the movie world.

She has also been an activist for people and the planet for decades and has been seen protesting and even arrested during protests.

An iconic move of hers is this stunning red sequin gown which she has worn to every award show she has attended since 2014.

She has stated that this is the last award dress she will ever own and will wear it to every event.

This is a fantastic attitude to have. We know the issues with fast fashion and the social stigma of wearing an outfit more than once, especially if you are a big influencer or celebrity. This attitude of course trickles down to us everyday folks who feel we can’t post on instagram wearing the same outfit we wore last week!

But we have to stop thinking like this and wear the damn dress again! This attitude is literally destroying the planet!

So what is an outfit that you adore and will wear with pride over and over?

Episode 9: The Uprising of Second Hand Fashion

We are huge fans of second hand shopping. We love a bargain and giving a second life to an item that could have ended up in landfill.

In this episode we discuss the trend of second hand and vintage that has been sweeping the nation these past few years and how excited we are about it.

Fast fashion causes so much harm to our planet from the awful conditions the factory workers endure, to the amount of energy and water needed just to make one garment. We do what we can to avoid fast fashion where possible to use our spending power and voices to say no more to this toxic industry.

Amy also has experience in selling second hand and offers some great tips and advice on how she has made around £1000 in the process.

How amazing are these planters from ReWorked!!! Twenty-three of these stunning window box planters made from recycled plastic waste by reworked have been put up on Fortnum & Mason's flagship Piccadilly storefront!

These planters were made using collected beach waste, ghost fishing gear & nets - recycled using Reworked’s innovative process. In this case, a mixture of beach waste, PPE waste and pulverised bottle tops created the colourful speckled effect on the surface. With around a quarter of a tonne diverted from landfill & incineration and 800kg of carbon from avoiding landfills and not using any virgin plastic materials!! These planters are now filled with plants and wildflowers to provide pollen for their rooftop bees, who are thrilled to now have a short commute to feed!! How incredible is this!

When we spoke to Izzie from reworked in episode 9 this is what she said about this moment:
“It’s great to have the support from businesses like that, it's such a small thing, but it's that recognition, it gets you seen in the right places, so when it does come to the government its like these people have their trust in us, so why don't you put your trust in us too! Then think what could we do… Imagine if every bin on the street was made from hard to recycle waste! It should be an absolute standard, ReWorked could be on the way to doing that” Izzie

In our most recent episode we chat to Izzie from ReWorked, an amazing recycling company! has partnered with Boots and No7 to provide us recycling points in Boots stores so we can recycle cosmetic waste and even get rewards from it by using scan2recycle technology!

Reworked are currently in a trial period with Boots so not in all stores but they are looking to expand that in the next month to make it accessible to everyone in the UK! 🙌🏼💚

“We don’t want any cosmetics waste going to landfill when we know it just doesn't need to be there! Our goal is to offer in more stores than just boots as cosmetic waste is such a problem, Boots might be one of the biggest retailers but there's definitely more out there so watch this space!” Izzie

Its quite lovely to see fun pictures of our fabulous reusable cups and bamboo toothbrushes, but we also have to acknowledge the reason why the Plastic Free July movement came about.

And this is the reality.

Wildlife all over the planet is suffering and dying because our waste is not disposed of properly and plastic really is a devastation on our planet.

If we have a reason and a passion to make changes, we are more likely to succeed and stick it out.

So if you are in need of some motivation, here is a true example of one!

Episode 7. Plastic Free July 2021: Take The Challenge

You may not be in place to start making swaps or able to make any more. And thats ok. There are so many other ways you can get involved with plastic free July.

You can take this time to look around your home and see where the majority of the waste you produce is accumulating. You can start to make a plan of what you intend to do, be it a trash audit, making simple swaps or just changing those habits of a lifetime that we are all guilty of. Have a listen to our plastic free July episode to get an idea of things you can do 💚

Episode 7. Plastic Free July 2021: Take The Challenge

Just a few of our favourite swaps to help inspire you this Plastic Free July!

Reusable bag. It does take a bit of forward planning and we aren't perfect, but we always try our best to take a bag with us wherever we go!

Reusable straw. There is nothing worse than receiving a plastic or even a paper straw when out and about (turns out the paper straws are not recyclable!) Take your own straw and have one less piece of plastic out in the world.

Shampoo bars. Amy is obsessed with her shampoo bar from Soap and Soul. She gets so many compliments about how amazing her hair is!

Bamboo cutlery. During the pandemic our lives have been all about alfresco dining when we have met up with our friends and family for a socially distanced picnic in the park. The reusable cutlery has been a lifesaver to reduce plastic at our gatherings!

Reusable cup. We are both professional coffee drinkers, so a reusable drink cup is a must in both their bags.

Reusable period wear. Saving so much money with this swap and never having to worry about running out of supply! Winning!

Natural or recycled materials. Sophie is very conscious about the clothing she buys. She hasn't bought any new clothes for three years and only shops for second hand options.

Compostable tea bags. There is so much plastic in tea bags. Gross! But luckily there are way more options now for plastic free, biodegradable and compostable bags out there. No more drinking plastic!

What is one of your favourite swaps that you cannot live without?

Episode 7. Plastic Free July 2021: Take The Challenge

Don’t be put off by the language. The ultimate goal is to be completely plastic free, but in our modern society it is just not possible.

And not all plastic is bad! Sometimes it is necessary in our lives.

But there are many alternatives to plastic that can be easily and painlessly switched out.

One of Sophie’s most achievable swaps was her bathroom. She can happily say she has a plastic free bathroom thanks to a few switches. She switched out her dental care, body wash and shampoo to plastic free alternatives. She also switched her shampoo and bathroom cleaners to refillable options. She then got a safety razor and boom, plastic free bathroom!

What can you say is plastic free in your home? Maybe you have plastic free dental care? Plastic free cleaning?

Episode 7 Plastic Free July 2021: Take The Challenge

The movement began in Australia in 2011 and has inspired an estimated 326 mil participants in 177 countries.

It’s important to know that there is no pressure and to do what works for you and your mindset.

Don’t be put off by the language used, as the term “plastic free” can be quite a daunting task that is unachievable for many of us.

Instead look for ways to get involved.

Start to educate yourself and use this time since social media will be flooded with information. Educate yourself even if you're not in a place to make swaps, you can start to look for changes to make in the future.

Will you take the challenge?

They are manufactured using renewable solar and wind energy, which reduces the carbon footprint of these tees by 90%. The cotton production is also committed to ethical working practises.

We love how inclusive Lauren is too and she has specifically designed these t-shirts to be gender neutral so anyone will feel like a rockstar when they style it in their own way.

Episode 7 Being an Alternative Witch in the Zero Waste Community with Lauren from Earth Friendly Rocker

A huge stigma about the zero waste movement is that you have to follow a meat free diet.

Being vegan is a very privileged lifestyle that is not accessible to everyone and is an unrealistic lifestyle for many.

Lauren from EarthFriendlyRocker talks very openly about her struggles with an eating disorder and how she has shifted her mindset to a “plant focused” diet, which she describes as switching out meat for plant when she can. This allows her to reduce her meat intake without feeling like she is restricting her diet.

We think this is an excellent mind set and one we hope everyone would consider.

The problem with the agriculture industry is the shear quality it has to produce to keep up with demand. If everyone swapped one meat meal a week for a vegetable option, it could drastically reduce the need and help farming become more sustainable.

Here more of Lauren’s story in the latest episode of Do You Need A Bag? on your podcast streaming app.

Episode 7 Being an Alternative Witch in the Zero Waste Community with Lauren from Earth Friendly Rocker

Great advice from Lauren when it comes to swapping our products for ones that are more sustainable.

You have to be passionate and really care about it, otherwise you may loose interest, especially if it is something that maybe out of your usual routine.

Sophie is very passionate about skincare as she has suffered since her teenage years with skin issues. Swapping out her skincare routine was a breeze when she noticed the huge improvements it made to her skin.

For Amy, it was food and packaging waste that her family accumulated. She started to monitor the waste in her home and bought a compost bin. She also made easy to use recycling bins to ensure it was a simple process for her and her family.

What’s something you have found easy to swap out?
