I’m feeling blessed by a lot these days. Those of you who listen to the New World Kirtan Podcast are one of my biggest blessings — this community has enriched my life in ways too numerous to count. Thank you for being here. And we’ve been here together for quite a long time — the first edition of the podcast was posted in 2018 before anyone really knew what a podcast was. I was always trying to explain it! We’ve been through quite a journey together — my mother’s illness & death, my own surgeries & health challenges, several momentous American elections and the COVID-19 pandemic, to name a few. Kirtan & Bhakti Yoga were my anchors through all of it.
To honor our journey, I’m rerunning some of the most downloaded episodes of the NWK Podcast over the years. We'll begin with Om Shiva from 2013, celebrating the Hindu festival of Maha Shivaratri on February 18. This podcast has been a journal of sorts, and I have to say I loved listening to my 2013 self talking about how I’d like o build a kirtan community here in Corvallis. How far we’ve come!
I'm blessed to have you as a listener, dear one. Until next time. Namaste.

This edition of the New World Kirtan Podcast is an interview with Dave Stringer, Madi Das & Seán Johnson about the very exciting news that Madi & Dave’s CD ’Mantra Americana’ has been nominated for a Grammy award!
Dave, Madi & Sean tell you about the process behind getting the Grammy’s New Age category renamed to include chant for the very first time, how the pandemic helped with that process & led to the birth of the Auricle Collective. Then we’ll hear about the mashup of musical influences that gave birth to this extraordinary album ‘Mantra Americana’, and how Dave & Madi feel about going to the Grammys for the second time.
The Grammys are tomorrow night, so let’s send the guys all our love and best wishes!

Hello friends, I hope this finds you healthy & doing well. Kirtan is going to the Grammys! Here's the first of several excerpts from the interview New World Kirtan Podcast did with Dave Stringer, Madi Das Brinkmann & Seán Johnson about their Grammy-nominated album "Mantra Americana."

It has been a glorious summer & fall here, one of the most beautiful I can remember. But now the rains have started, and the leaves are falling. The Corvallis kirtan community continues to grow, and we’ll be starting live kirtan concerts again in December. It feels good to be returning to this magical practice.
Let’s enter the way back machine for a moment and recall, back in April, me telling you about the Auricle Collective — a community of more than 156 musicians rooted in singing, chanting & music as art and spiritual practice. These are the musicians that fuel our Bhakti Yoga practice. If you were able to participate in the Spotify Experiment, explained in the 2 previous podcasts, we are deeply grateful. Here are some of the results.
Since the launch of The Experiment, we have generated over 2,000 Spotify followers for our kirtan artists, with an average growth of 280% in followers from before the Experiment began. This means that our artists’ music will be circulated more widely through Spotify’s algorithms, and whenever any Auricle artist releases new music, many more listeners will be notified. We now have 1,00 subscribers to the Auricle newsletter and have heard from many artists from around the world who wish to join the Collective. This is a fantastic beginning, and we’re excited to see the impact expand and the ripple effect over time. We’re so thankful for your support in making this possible!
The Spotify Experiment is now ongoing; anyone can follow all of our artists with one click at any time. Click on this link, and please continue to share!
Here’s some more exciting news — sacred chant has been designated as a new category for the Grammy awards! The next few podcasts will be featuring music from our Grammy-nominated artists, so stay tuned!
The music in this week’s set is the third and last of the podcasts with all new music from Auricle Collective artists. Please enjoy, and if you think of it, please give the podcast a rating on iTunes, it will help more people to find us.
Vote. Believe in the vision, and what a beautiful world we’ll create. Much love to you all, and until next time — Namaste.

Today is the big day -- it's the launch of the Auricle Collective experiment, and it comes with a new podcast of new music from your favorite artists!

If you recall, back in April I told you about the Auricle Collective. This is a community of more than 100 musicians rooted in singing, chanting & music as art and spiritual practice. They’re the musicians that fuel our Bhakti Yoga practice.
Back in the olden days when we were downloading music, a single song cost 99 cents. Now, in the streaming era, a song has to be downloaded 315 times for an artist to make the same amount of money. In other words, Spotify & other streaming services are making it much more difficult for artists to earn a living from their music. How can we support the artists we love?
Well, we can’t change this system, but we can still work together to influence it. Now the Auricle Collective is asking us to do just that, as it has designed an app and created an experiment to see if we can hijack the algorithms to feature & recommend our kirtan artists more often. By joining our voices together, we’ll have the ability to powerfully amplify each other. Instead of working for the algorithm, we’ll be making it work for us. How to join in this experiment? It’s really simple: click on the link to open the app, log in to Spotify and follow all your favorite artists with a single click. If all of us do this it will send a massive pulse to amplify the algorithms that recommend & feature music on Spotify. It will take you just 5 seconds to fire off a love explosion in service to spiritual music, and just think — by doing this you’ll not only help lift up your favorite artists, but you’ll also increase the visibility of many emerging artists in our kirtan community & introduce yourself to some amazing music you haven’t heard yet. Isn’t that cool? So let’s give it a try and see what happens!
The music in this week’s set is all new music from Auricle Collective artists — some of it hasn’t even been released yet. The artists have sent me lots of their new music, so there will be several more of these Fresh Tracks sets coming. Please enjoy, and until next time, my friends — Namaste.

One of the most wonderful things about singing kirtan is that we're part of a beautiful worldwide community dedicated to this Bhakti practice. We can have a collective voice, come together as a community and support our artists. And I’m going to tell you how we can do that.
Several weeks ago I was on a Zoom call with over 50 kirtan artists to hear more about something called the Auricle Collective — this is a project spearheaded by Dave Stringer, Seán Johnson and several other Kirtan artists. We’re all connected by the thread of sacred music as a spiritual path. The goal of the Auricle Collective is to share our resources to promote & support our kirtan artists, who are making music that is participatory, devotional and that has the intention of shifting consciousness.
The weekend of May 14 & 15, the Auricle Collective will launch an experiment designed to massively stimulate the Spotify algorithm and increase the streams and income for Kirtan artists. Your participation is important, because it will help gather data about the audience for Kirtan — it will also expand the reach of this podcast. I’ll be telling you more about this as the project progresses, so stay tuned.
Through singing, we experience the Divine in ourselves, and in one another. When we join our voices together, we become a mighty force of Love that has the power to change so many things. We need this music. The world does too.
This brings us to this edition of the podcast. It’s hard for us to imagine the horrors the brave people in Ukraine are going through these days. It’s easy to feel helpless against the wave of all that hatred. What can we do to help them? Stand in the light, do our spiritual practices, sing kirtan, visualize a wave of Love flooding over Ukraine and Russia. We can do our best to shift the energy and turn the world to love. Visualize that as you sing this set to Shiva — the Hindu deity who destroys in order to create.
Thanks for listening to the podcast, dear hearts, and until next time — Namaste.

Really feeling this quote today. From Dr. Mark Hyman's newsletter.
“I am washing my face before bed while a country is on fire. It feels dumb to wash my face, and dumb not to. It has never been this way, and it has always been this way. Someone has always clinked a cocktail glass in one hemisphere as someone loses a home in another while someone falls in love in the same apartment building where someone grieves. The fact that suffering, mundanity and beauty coincide is unbearable and remarkable.” - Mari Andrew

A post from a Ukrainian woman on Facebook. As we watch from afar, we're not helpless. Holding light & love for all is something we can do no matter what our spiritual beliefs.

Let there be Peace on Earth, and let it begin with me.
Lokah Samasta Sukino Bhavantu.

“Passing on this “unpopular” request and message from my dear friend and former classmate holding out in the encircled Kyiv 🇺🇦

“From my side, there will be an unpopular request for help now: if possible, please send light and love to everyone. Everyone. On all sides. No division. No judgment. Not right or wrong. Peace on the outside is not possible without peace on the inside. There’s so much hate. We have to raise the vibration. We get what we generate from within. Peace in the world begins with peace in the soul of everyone. Focusing on hatred and wishing that someone died generates a destructive wave of energy that affects everyone.

Each of us is responsible for the energy we put out into the world. We all influence the situation. And we affect everything that is happening now. With our hatred, fears, separation, judgments... and now it is important for us to change our state. Wake up. Not through destruction. Not through pain and war. Channel wholeness and oneness. Turn on the flow of light. Expand it. And maintain it. Not only to Ukraine, Russia, but also to the whole world. And to politicians too. Not to absolve anyone or judge who’s in the right and who’s in the wrong but because sending love to one but hatred to another is antithetical to true peace. We need to wake up, and realize that our true selves and true souls are those of oneness. Goodness of heart costs nothing. And right now it’s needed.

At night, when the blasts and shots were coming, I decided to stay in the bathtub, surround myself with crystals and meditate. Then I slept. Most people are sheltering under ground. I'm at home. Let it be for now. Sometimes it rumbles so much that the heart stops. I try to breathe.””

Ahh … sometimes all you want is to sink down into music that will release your mind & relax your body. I hope this set will do it for you — chanting this music turned me into a puddle after I played it for our Friday Satsang.
Bill’s & my pandemic life has a rhythm that is comforting. Nonetheless, it will be nice to get back to something more normal — whatever that might look like. Recovery from the hip dislocation & nerve injury is progressing — I’m a lot stronger than I was a month ago. We’re planning a renovation of our garden, and that has been fun to dream about. Construction starts next month, I’ll post pictures!
A lot of our journey together has been about illness & pain, but I think I’ve turned a corner health-wise. I’m filled with hope for the future. For over 2 years we’ve been in the same storm but in different boats, my friends. Let’s all visualize heading into sunny weather, And wherever your boat is moored, I hope this podcast finds you healthy & surrounded by people you love.
Enjoy the set, and until next time — Namaste.

Hello friends,
Happy Thanksgiving!
Sometimes it takes something bad happening in your life to get you radically present to how beautiful life is, and how fortunate you are. That’s where I am at the moment — thankful, grateful, blessed describes it perfectly.
This week the music is all about expressing gratitude to the Divine for our many blessings. Last Friday we sang the chants at the beginning of the set, and when we got to ‘Ang Sang Wahe Guru’ we focused on the heart chakra opening to the infinite stream of gratitude to the Divine — it was really powerful. There’s a 40-Day Sadhana led by Mirabai Ceiba that goes more deeply into this, the link is in the show notes.
Yet another reason for me to be thankful is the community that has been built around this podcast. If you’re listening, I’m grateful for you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for one of the deepest blessings of my life. Until next time, dear ones — Namaste.

Happy New Year, dear friends! It’s certainly a relief to see the end of 2020!
I played this set on New Years Day for our Friday Satsang. To harness the energy of new beginnings, the music is focused on chants to Ganesha, the destroyer of all obstacles. Ganesha is probably the most beloved of the Hindu deities, and in India he is invoked before the beginning of almost every task.
I’m doing a lot of chanting to Ganesha now — not only because it’s the beginning of a New Year, but also because we have a week coming up that contains perilous waters for our country. Please use the set to support the personal changes you’d like to see happen in this New Year, but I also ask you to send a prayer or two to the United States for a peaceful transfer of power.
We have music from Manorama, Deva Premal & Miten, Brenda McMorrow, Adam Bauer, Dave Stringer, Jai Uttal, Jaya Lakshmi & Ananda, Johanna Beekman & Katie Wise. The entire setlist is at the NWK website.
Here’s to all our bright new beginnings, my friends. Here’s to staying healthy so we see them all come to fruition. Until next time. Namaste.

21/12/2020

Tomorrow, December 21, is Winter solstice, For many cultures around the world, the winter solstice marks an important milestone. It's the shortest day of the year and the longest night of the year, and signals a powerful transition point between seasons. The Solstice is believed to hold a powerful energy for regeneration, renewal and self-reflection. Also occurring on Monday is an astrological event called the Great Conjunction. The Great Conjunction occurs every 20 years and refers to the planets Saturn and Jupiter aligning in the heavens. The planets will get so close together that they may look like one very bright star — it will be 2080 before the planets align so closely again. If you’re into astrology, it is the closing of one astrological era & the beginning of another, with Jupiter & Saturn beginning a new cycle in a new element. This is a once-in-200-year opportunity to make the necessary adjustments needed to begin the long process of shifting course, and many mark this event in the sky as the beginning of the Age of Aquarius. Pretty cool, huh?
Our kirtan set this week is filled with chants that support these momentous changes, evoking & welcoming the light back to our world & into our consciousness. We have music from Deva Premal & Miten, Edo & Jo, Kristin Luna Ray, Suzin Green & Daniel Johnson, Kevin James, Larisa Stow & Shakti Tribe, Tim Jordan Kirtan, Maneesh De Moor & Brenda McMorrow. I’m sorry to be the bearer news — sweet Sruti Ram of Sri Kirtan passed this week, another death from COVID. I loved listening to him sing with Ishwari at all the Bhakti Fests I’ve attended. It’s going to be a long winter, my friends, but we now have the hope of a vaccine that works. Things are going to get better, but we’re not out of the woods yet, so wear a mask & practice social distancing. Honestly, after this is over I hope I never hear the words ‘social distance’ again. But in the meantime, stay healthy, have a beautiful Holiday & I’ll see you in the New Year. Happy Solstice! Namaste.

Here’s the latest edition of the New World Kirtan Podcast, it’s part 2 of a 2020 election care package, and was played for our Friday Satsang last month. The set is a deeply relaxing opportunity to rest in the arms of the Divine Mother for about an hour and a half. Be sure to stay until the end, when there’s a yummy musical meditation on the Devi Prayer, from 108 Sacred Names of the Divine Mother.

If you listen to the introduction of this podcast you’ll hear that I’m re-assessing the format — I’m trying to decide whether it makes sense to go to a Spotify playlist format. I’d love to hear from you if the podcast has impacted your life in some way and if the Spotify playlist format would serve you better. Please email me at [email protected] and let me know your thoughts.

New World Kirtan is a podcast that is about and for our kirtan community. If you’re an artist or a listener, please get in touch and help me to know how to serve you in better ways. Thanks!
