Recently, I have really been pushing to support our Nigerian brothers and sisters as they try to end police brutality in Nigeria. Learning about whats happening in Nigeria really made me more aware on a global scale. Sometimes as Black Americans, we often focus on what's happening to us here in America. We worry about our own struggles because of history here as African Americans and rightfully so. Black Lives Matter has become a global movement because Black people around the world empathize with our struggle within their own country.
As African Americans, we are always grateful for it but a lot of times we only think that Black Lives Matter is only limited to us. Partially because we are not exposed to what's happening in the rest of the world as often as we should be. Other times, when we do hear about other foreign black people struggles, we kind dismiss it as if ours is worse. For some, we think that Black people only exist in about 3 places. Though often times, we just don't hear about other black people experiences. With the internet, I think we are starting to become more global and realizing that their are black people outside of America, Jamica and the continent of Africa.
So, what does that mean for us? How does black america now apply BLM globally? If I was to talk to most Black Americans, they would tell you that they are for all black life and when they say that, they aren't thinking of any particular location. But now, we really have to apply that the phrase Black Lives Matter outside of America. We have to apply it to any black life who is discriminated around the world!!!
Now, when I put it that way, it sounds crazy. Does that mean traveling? Does that mean trying to change laws in other countries? Does that mean running for offices in other countries? The answer to all of that is no. I don't expect you to leave the country if you don't have any money or run for any office. Most times, all you have to do is show your support. Spread awareness, use social media to tell people what is happening to black people around the world, and donate to organizations that actually helps the people in the community. If you want, you could form your own protest in your local community. All you have to do is speak in the same way you speak up for Black Americans.
Now, while you are fighting for black people around the world, make sure you do your research. Look at couple of articles that are credible and see what the people from that community is saying. Don't just repost to repost, take the time and learn what you are reposting. Who knows, maybe this could bridge a gap.
