Jolly Good Bollywood - Members Only We are two friends raised on (and arguably, by) Bollywood.
(1)

After a decade of talking about it at tea stalls and over phone calls once we got separated by timezones, we're finally using our time in social isolation to start our Bollywood podcast over Zoom.

Our new episode is one of many firsts.

1. It is our first episode about Bollywood film music. In it we have tried to map a history of music director duos from Husnalal Bhagatram to Meet Bros.

2. Perhaps, more importantly, it is our first episode with a guest star: Arshdeep, our dearest friend and truly a person with encyclopedic knowledge about most things (Bollywood included), joins us in discussing our favorite music director duos. We could not have chosen a better person to start what we hope will be a series of guest stars on the podcast.

Let us know in the comments what you thought of the episode, and who your favorite music director duo is.

Good morning, it's Monday but we don't have the blues because our tech troubles have been resolved and the two of us have been reunited.

Sadly, our reunion was not quite as as this moment in Yaadon Ki Baarat, which is one of our most favorite films and is also one of the films we talk about in our new episode which drops soon.

What's your favorite film about families reuniting?

We have been having some tech difficulties lately, and tech being the all-important bridge that connects us during our cross-continental recording sessions, it's been quite a setback.

However, we will be back as soon we are back up again. In the meantime, take a gander at this remarkable piece on the importance of choreographer Saroj Khan in bridging Bollywood styles through the ages. In a summer of many losses, hers has been the most recent. May she rest In peace.

Hope you all are doing well. Leave us a word about what you've been watching.

Peace,

In this week's episode, we discuss representations of uprisings in Bollywood films through the decades as well as the importance of such films.

We discuss films on the Indian freedom struggle, the Angry Young Man and his discontents, uprisings in Parallel Cinema, and finally, the curious lack of depictions of certain kinds of uprisings in contemporary Hindi Cinema.

How many Bhagat Singh biopics have you seen? Please let us know in the comments (along with what you thought of the episode).

In our first ever tribute episode, we look back at the marvelous body of work of one of our favorite performers, Irrfan Khan: https://audioboom.com/posts/7595390-episode-5-irrfan

True to form, we have spent some time discussing not just the great films Irrfan was a part of, but also (and perhaps, more so) the bad or mediocre films that he elevated simply by being in them.

Let us know in the comments what you think of the episode. And please, like, share, and subscribe.

In this week's episode, we discuss some of our favorite star kids who could not quite become stars themselves, and take on the big 'N' word problem of the industry: Nepotism.

Naturally, our unabashed love for Zayed Khan and Uday Chopra is displayed in all their glory.

We are now streaming on JioSaavn!

This is special for us in some ways because our name 'Jolly Good Bollywood' comes from the film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (Dir. Karan Johar, 2016), where Ranbir Kapoor has a playlist on Saavn by the same name.

Listen to Jolly Good Bollywood: Members Only, a English podcast exclusively on JioSaavn. We are two friends raised on (and arguably, by) Bollywood. One half of Jolly Good Bollywood has driven the other half quite insane by singing this song over and over again as we recorded our new episode, so it's only suppose it's subjected upon you all as we countdown to the launch of Episode 3 this Sunday!

Rishi Kapoor was not an unproblematic man, but it doesn't take away from his body of work (both the boisterous days of his overstretched youth which make up so much of our early film memories--ugly sweaters and all--and the remarkable second innings where he became one of the best contemporary character actors). The loss of someone like him is quite complicated for this reason, because we have to balance our childhood memories of him romancing in the Alps and our respect for some of his later performances with our distaste for some of his real life shenanigans. Regardless, here's bidding farewell to the actor who screamed "KYA TUMNE KABHI KISSI SE PYAAR KIYA HAI?" at us while dancing on a revolving disc while wearing silver clothes.

Our well wishes to his family.

As we mourn the loss of one of Hindi cinema's finest actors, here's a favourite interview of ours in which the illustrious Irrfan Khan talks to Naseeruddin Shah about the craft of cinema, acting and above all, his passion for an art form that drove him to love the camera and everything he did in front of it. Rest in peace, Irrfan Khan. Cinema would never be the same without Ashoke Ganguli and Saajan Fernandes. :)

We have been busy with work this weekend, so we don't have an episode for you all yet, but here's a little randomness one of us worked on (what can we say, the lockdown is making us do strange things)--and as we have always done with each other's random ideas, the other encouraged it (like the rest of Badshah's detective agency).

Our Story

We’re two friends, born and raised as Bollywood freaks, who decided, after a decade of talking about it in classrooms, at tea stalls, and over WhatsApp and FaceTime (one we were separated by timezones), that we were ready to have you all join in on the conversation as well.
