James Bowie has been suspended for failing to cooperate with investigators and producing documents.

An Ottawa lawyer, who earlier this month made headlines because of accusations of sexual misconduct, has had his law licence suspended following a hearing into unrelated issues with the Law Society of Ontario.

Sometimes we gravitate toward groups who share similar interests, or beliefs, or life experiences. At OCH, this is one of the reasons the drop-in appeals to so many of our clients. They are all of a similar age, have many of the same experiences, and often bond over mutual beliefs when it comes to their circumstances or how the world around them works.

What often happens in these circumstances is that an echo chamber can be created - a dynamic where only the views of compatriots are heard and where opposing opinions are dismissed or suppressed. For this reason, our drop-in staff make efforts to foster open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas around the drop-in breakfast table.

We have seen some of our neighbours, friends, and community members celebrating the potential return of the convoy protest in the coming months. They remember it as a fun, warm, loving party where everyone was incredibly nice and generous, where the central themes to come of the February event were DJs and bouncy castles.

We would like to remind you that this was not what everyone experienced. Reporters almost certainly remember the hate more than they do the bouncy castles. For many of them, that hate has not abated in the months since the convoy left town. For residents of the downtown core where OCH is located, it was a weeks-long assault on their ears, their sleep, and their sanity.

For many of our youth, who spend the bulk of their days on the streets that were occupied by this demonstration, it was a constant barrage of insulting language and threatening behaviour. Those youth who wear LGBTQ+ flags, transgender flags, or Black Lives Matter patches on their clothing or bags were particularly at risk for this abusive behaviour, and some chose not to come to the drop in because it meant walking through a terrifying gauntlet of bigotry.

We get that your experience of the convoy may have been different. But don't diminish, dismiss, or ignore the very real experiences of some of the most vulnerable people who call this area home.

If and when the 'Convoy 2.0' tries to occupy the downtown core again, at a time when unhoused people in Ottawa are dealing with a lack of housing, a global pandemic, and rising costs just to exist - among all the other hardships that come with not having a home - please decline to participate.

Ottawa police's new chief Eric Stubbs and Mayor Mark Sutcliffe made their first appearances at an Ottawa Police Services Board meeting Monday afternoon and were met with an earful of criticism. Later, members of the public clashed with police outside the meeting room and police arrested one person.
