Houston Landing The Houston Landing is a nonprofit newsroom devoted to public service journalism for all Houstonians. Stories that offer solutions to pressing problems.

The Houston Landing will provide trusted reporting about local issues important to our region. Investigative journalism that holds the powerful accountable. The Houston Landing will do more than cover institutions and topics. We will deeply report stories from neighborhoods in a way that builds trust. We will work hard to always follow up our stories and hold officials accountable. We will be resp

onsive to our communities’ needs and ask questions on their behalf. We will dedicate reporters to helping solve problems and create helpful guides on important issues you want to know. We will make our reporting as accessible as possible to as many people as we can. We will embrace creativity even if it means we sometimes fail. We will push for civic engagement as much as we fight for accountability reporting. Most of all, we will listen to the community we serve and learn how to be better. 🎺 When Houston ISD high schoolers Zayden Longoria, Giselle Zambrano and Esmeralda Rodriguez heard the news that their Mariachi group had earned top honors at their regional competition Saturday, it seemed like the moment couldn’t get more magical. That’s before they went viral on TikTok.

Tired and hungry from their big day, the ensemble stopped at a Whataburger, where they encountered another team from the same competition. Both groups decided to offer an impromptu serenade to their fellow restaurant-goers, who whooped and recorded the moment on their phones.

By Thursday, the video had racked up over 2 million views and tens of thousands of comments and shares. For this week’s “Pop Quiz” feature, we spoke with the three students to hear more about their special moment.

Three students recount how an unexpected meeting of groups from Houston and Klein ISDs turned into an impromptu concert at the Texas institution.

This week, the Trump administration revoked the extension of Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans granted by the Biden administration in its last days in office.

The decision could potentially strip 600,000 Venezuelans in the U.S. of deportation protections as the Donald Trump administration focuses on immigration enforcement, leaving many Venezuelans in Houston vulnerable to detention and deportation.

The Harris County medical examiner’s report on the driver who caused the Deer Park pipeline explosion says the man had a history of su***de attempts and had recently been discharged from a rehabilitation center for alcohol addiction.

The report on the Sept. 16 death of driver Jonathan McEvoy Sr., which was released Wednesday, cites these two factors — plus video surveillance of the vehicle accelerating toward the pipeline — as the evidence for ruling the death a su***de.

Autopsy shows death of the driver who crashed into a Deer Park pipeline was ruled a su***de because of his past mental health issues.

The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce had been planning its Jan. 30 second annual THRIVE Small Business Summit and Matchmaker conference for six months.

But in an instant, event planners were left scrambling to find a new venue once President Donald Trump signed an executive order to freeze federal funds to municipalities and nonprofits, according to chamber leaders.

The Chamber originally planned to host its event at the Federal Reserve Bank off Allen Parkway. Trump’s anti-DEI executive order changed all that.

About 880,000 Hispanic residents moved to Houston in the past 14 years, the most of any city in Texas. More than 3 million Houston residents now identify as Hispanic, and this number is expected to grow to 3.4 million in the next five years.

These new Houstonians are likely drawn by the affordable cost of living and strong economy, including the oil and gas industry and blue-collar jobs, Sensis President Jose Villa said at a presentation of the report organized by American Marketing Association Houston.

More than 3 million Houstonians identify as Hispanic, and this number is expected to grow by 2029, according to a report by marketing firm Sensis.

Houston community colleges serve students pursuing many unique academic paths that ultimately lead to a few destinations.

Community colleges offer several kinds of awards that students have their sights on when they enroll: associate degrees, technical and workforce certificates, and, increasingly, four-year bachelor’s degrees.

Students attending Houston’s largest community colleges largely eye associate degrees, with a smaller share seeking work certificates, data show.

Houston ISD students notched gains in fourth-grade math but otherwise didn’t show much improvement in 2024 on an exam known as the “Nation’s Report Card.”

The results on the closely watched tests, given every two years to students across the country, mark a potential sign of slowing student recovery after the pandemic and mixed progress in the early months of HISD Superintendent Mike Miles’ overhaul of the district.

Houston ISD didn’t make big gains on the biannual tests, but it also bucked state and national trends showing students falling behind.

A federal judge blocked President Donald Trump’s directive to freeze federal funds to municipalities and nonprofits minutes before it was set to take effect Tuesday.

The judge’s ruling came as Houston and Harris County officials scrambled to determine the potential impact of the president’s pause on federal grants and aid, a move local officials had said could hold up hundreds of millions of dollars in funding.

The pause – and potential future elimination of funds – could have far-reaching impacts on the city and county’s operating budgets.

Alief ISD leaders have put new policies in place and retrained employees to prevent the illegal suspension of homeless students, the result of a state-mandated plan to prevent the practice.

In passing the law, legislators cited homeless students’ reliance on school facilities for meals, showers, and other resources. Alief serves hundreds of homeless students in southwest Houston.

The Texas Education Agency said Alief leaders must act after the district suspended homeless students in violation of state law.

During the first week of the second Trump presidency, residents of Colony Ridge, the predominantly Latino housing development about 40 miles northeast of Houston, have increasingly been on edge.

Images and videos showing law enforcement officers seemingly engaged in immigration enforcement have inundated Facebook groups, fueling fears that a larger crackdown might be underway, despite few confirmed cases of immigration arrests in the area.

Immigrant families in Colony Ridge are grappling with fear and uncertainty amid rising immigration enforcement under Trump.

So far, there’s no evidence to suggest immigration agents are making arrests at Houston schools. But that could change as President Donald Trump’s plans to mass deport immigrants living in the country illegally ramp up.

Here’s what we know about the policy change and what it could mean for Houston-area schools.

Federal immigration agents can now make arrests at campuses nationwide. How often they will do it at Houston schools remains unknown.

There are many options for free or low-cost legal services. Here are some that are focusing on helping immigrant families in Houston.

The Department of Justice announced cuts to funding for immigration legal service providers Wednesday, including legal services at immigration courts and a program to increase representation for minors.

The cuts to the program are just one part of President Donald Trump’s Week One efforts to make it more difficult for immigrants to legally come and stay in the U.S.

The DOJ stopped funding programs that help immigrants understand an inherently convoluted and bureaucratic immigration court system.
