Houston Landing The Houston Landing is a nonprofit newsroom devoted to public service journalism for all Houstonians. Stories that offer solutions to pressing problems.

The Houston Landing will provide trusted reporting about local issues important to our region. Investigative journalism that holds the powerful accountable. The Houston Landing will do more than cover institutions and topics. We will deeply report stories from neighborhoods in a way that builds trust. We will work hard to always follow up our stories and hold officials accountable. We will be resp

onsive to our communities’ needs and ask questions on their behalf. We will dedicate reporters to helping solve problems and create helpful guides on important issues you want to know. We will make our reporting as accessible as possible to as many people as we can. We will embrace creativity even if it means we sometimes fail. We will push for civic engagement as much as we fight for accountability reporting. Most of all, we will listen to the community we serve and learn how to be better. Well before the renaissance of dating apps and online chat rooms, a love story unique to Houston came to life: A clash of Latino and Chicano artforms in the form of Vanessa, a then-aspiring mariachi singer, and Horacio, a car enthusiast and soon to become lowrider expert.

Vanessa and Horacio Alonzo created adjacent careers bonded by their love for each other and their craft. Together, they’ve perfected dress designs.

For residents in Houston-area cities such as Morgan’s Point and Nassau Bay, addressing local government leaders during a city council meeting is as simple as showing up and walking to the podium.

For other local government agencies, however, the public comment process is not such a cakewalk — for example, those wishing to speak at Tomball ISD school board meetings must submit an online form during a five hour window the morning of the meeting.

Inconsistent rules across different agencies can make navigating the public comment process difficult, creating barriers to local government.

The program to rehire firefighters who have left the department within the last five years was born out of the contentious relationship and long-stalled contract talks between the firefighters union and the city under former Mayor Sylvester Turner.

About 70 former firefighters applied to come back to the Houston Fire Department under the new rehire program. The first 18 are back on the job.

This coalition teams’ work could change depending on the success of a funding campaign spearheaded by the coalition and the city of Houston that aims to piece together $70 million over the next year. The funding would boost the scope of the outreach teams and create resource hubs throughout the city.

Mayor Whitmire’s plan to expand homeless outreach efforts and guide individuals to regional hubs for help has support. Now it needs the funding.

Two or three times a month, about 25 students at Spring ISD's credit recovery school gather during the school day in groups of boys and girls for programs ranging from breast cancer awareness workshops to mental health seminars.

Two Momentum teachers — Aaron Boudreaux and Charlotte Manning — formed the groups several months ago to help students with jobs, young parents and other aspiring graduates complete their high school degree after a hiatus.

D, her 13-year-old daughter and her husband boarded a bus in June from Monterrey to Reynosa, the last leg of their 1,400-mile journey from San Pedro Sula, Honduras to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Two years ago, gang members killed two mechanics at the motorcycle shop that D owned and threatened to kill her next if she didn’t pay an extortion fee. She fled to Dallas, where she lived for two years. But D returned to Honduras to get her youngest daughter who begged her mom to save her from her abusive father.

Harris County’s district and county courts unveiled an updated plan Wednesday for expanding interpreter services for those navigating the court system, but said they will need millions in additional funding to sustain the effort.

The revamped plan calls for increasing the number of available interpreters, training judges and staff around language access and posting the availability of interpreters online and in the courthouse. As Houston ISD has undergone a barrage of reforms over the past 18 months, the district’s annual budget has gotten a shake-up, too. Under the leadership of a state-appointed board and Superintendent Mike Miles, HISD has made new investments in classroom spending and instructional leadership, while cutting back on spending for building maintenance and transportation.

Here’s a breakdown of Houston ISD’s 2024-25 budget, detailing how much will go to instruction, school leadership, building maintenance and more.

Over the past decade, Alief has lost about 8,000 students, or 18 percent of its enrollment, putting a dent in the district’s fast-shrinking budget. If the proud southwest Houston school district of about 38,500 students doesn’t stem the bleeding, it might be forced to make big cuts — ranging from bus route reductions, to staff layoffs, to campus closures in the most dire scenario.

The southwest Houston district has lost about 8,000 students over the past decade, mostly due to charter school growth.

Thousands more Houston ISD students are being taught by teachers with no prior classroom experience under second-year Superintendent Mike Miles, whose overhaul of the district has produced early test score gains but an increase in teacher turnover.

Houston ISD’s share of first-year teachers has doubled since the arrival of Superintendent Mike Miles in mid-2023, district data show.
