Amatullah Contractor, a senior advisor for the Emgage Texas chapter, empowers Muslim voters to become more civically engaged.
We interviewed Contractor as part of the fourth installment in Houston Landing's Who are HOU? series.
In 2016, Contractor got notice that her vote didn't cast, inspiring her to educate people on the steps they need to take to ensure their vote counted this past election season. She went door to door, in rain or shine, to meet with the South Asian community to encourage them to speak up, show up, and secure their seat at the table.

EXCLUSIVE: It was the day after Jocelyn Nungaray’s funeral in June when her mother, Alexis, heard this voicemail from then-Presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The call was just 10 days after 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray’s body was found tied up in a north Houston creek near Rankin and Kuykendahl, not far from where the family lived, thrusting Alexis into the national spotlight as an unlikely anti-immigration crusader in the campaigns of Trump and Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.
Central to her message is the immigration status of the two Venezuelan men charged with capital murder, sexual assault and kidnapping in Jocelyn’s case. Johan Jose Martinez Rangel, 22, and Franklin Jose Peña Ramos, 26, were released from Border Patrol custody earlier this year with pending immigration court hearings.
Now, with the spotlights dimmed post-election, our reporters got a special look inside her life and her grief.
