The days are getting longer, rugs are coming off, and the fields are finally starting to dry out (hopefully!). But while spring brings plenty to look forward to, it also comes with its fair share of challenges for horse owners.

So, what should you be keeping an eye on at this time of year?

🌱 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 & 𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸

After months of sparse grazing, horses can be very enthusiastic about the new flush of spring grass – but sudden dietary changes and rich pasture pose a risk of laminitis. This is especially important for good doers, native breeds, or those with metabolic conditions such as EMS or PPID.

What can you do?
✔️ Introduce spring grass gradually
✔️ Consider using a grazing muzzle or restricted turnout
✔️ Monitor for signs of laminitis: reluctance to move, shifting weight, or heat in the hooves
✔️ If your horse is at risk, discuss a management plan with your vet

🦟 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 & 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀

Warmer weather means the return of flies, midges, and parasites such as pinworm and lice. Horses with sweet itch may start showing symptoms as midges become active, and cases of worm-related colic can spike when parasite burdens increase in spring.

How to stay ahead:
✔️ Start fly control early – rugs, sprays, and good stable management can help
✔️ Check your horse for signs of rubbing, hair loss, or skin irritation
✔️ Speak to your vet about a targeted worming programme based on faecal egg counts

🏇 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 & 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀

If your horse has had a quieter winter, it’s tempting to get straight back into full work. But pushing too hard, too soon, can lead to injuries or setbacks.

Top tips for a successful return to work:
✔️ Build fitness gradually, especially for older horses
✔️ Include variety – hacking, polework, and hill work all help
✔️ Check tack fit – changes in weight or muscle tone will affect saddle fit

☀️ 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻 & 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀

Spring sunshine can be deceptively strong, particularly for pink-skinned horses prone to sunburn. If your horse has a fluffy winter coat, they may also struggle to regulate their temperature as the weather fluctuates.

How to help:
✔️ Use fly rugs with UV protection for sensitive horses
✔️ Apply sun cream to pink noses and exposed skin
✔️ Consider an early spring clip if your horse is sweating excessively

Spring is a great time to take stock of your horse’s health. Is their worming programme up to date? Are they due a dental check? Are their vaccinations still in date?

🐴 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 – 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗴𝗴? 🐓🥚

Gastric ulcers. They pop up a lot in my work. Why? Because let’s be honest, people don’t call me when their horse is feeling fantastic.🤪 I get called when something’s wrong – when a horse is in pain, moving poorly, or acting differently. And after years of working with rehab cases and sore, struggling horses, I can often tell pretty quickly when ulcers might be part of the problem.

But this isn’t just something I see in my work – I’ve been there as an owner too. One of my own horses was diagnosed with grade 4 ulcers, and managing them has been a constant balancing act alongside her congenital physical issues. I’ve seen firsthand how ulcers affect everything from movement to mood, and I know how frustrating it is when you’re struggling to find the root cause.

And that is the key question: 𝙒𝙝𝙮 are they there in the first place? 🤔

You can treat ulcers with medication, but unless you address the cause, they’ll come back. Ulcers don’t appear out of nowhere—there’s always a reason. Finding that reason is just as important as treating the ulcers themselves.

Possible Causes to Explore:
❓𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 – Is your horse going too long without forage? Is their diet balanced? Are they getting enough turnout?
❓ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 – This could be environmental, routine-based, or even social dynamics within the herd.
❓ 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 – A huge one! Many horses with ulcers also have underlying physical issues – SI pain, Kissing Spines, or low-grade lameness – causing ongoing stress and discomfort.

Think of the ex-racer on high-intensity training and limited forage. Or the good-doer cob, restricted to a tiny haynet overnight for weight management. Studies show that going just four hours without food can trigger a starvation response, increasing ulcer risk. That’s not long at all!

And time and time again, I see horses with undiagnosed pain – the ones struggling with canter leads, the “quirky” ones, the ones desperately trying to tell us something through their behaviour – who also have ulcers.

So, if your horse is diagnosed with ulcers, please don’t stop at treating them. 𝘼𝙨𝙠 𝙬𝙝𝙮. Find the root cause. Because healing isn’t just about fixing symptoms – it’s about solving the whole puzzle. 🧩

Why turnout matters ❤️

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 – even in Winter! ❄️

At this time of year, many horse owners face the dilemma each day of whether to keep their horses in or turn out. 🤔 It’s natural to worry about injuries, mud, or cold and wet weather, but the truth is, turnout is one of the best things you can do for your horse’s overall health and wellbeing—whatever the season! ☀️ 🌧️

Why Turnout Matters All Year Round?

🌱 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵
• Regular turnout encourages natural movement, which is essential for joint health, muscle tone, and overall fitness. Horses are designed to move throughout the day, and turnout helps to maintain this natural behaviour.
• Movement also promotes healthy digestion by keeping the gut active and reducing the risk of colic, as well as giving them the option to move around to warm up if they do feel cold!
• It’s better for respiratory health too! Fresh air helps reduce exposure to stable dust and ammonia, which can irritate the lungs.

🧠 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴
• Horses are herd animals with an instinctive need for social interaction and the freedom to exhibit natural behaviours like grazing, rolling, and playing.
• Turnout helps reduce stress, anxiety, and boredom that can come from long hours spent in a stable. This can also reduce stable vices such as cribbing or weaving.

Stabling horses for extended periods can actually 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 the risk of injury! Not only can they be just as prone to accidents in the stable the field, but once finally turned out or exercised, they’re more likely to exhibit excitable behaviour, heightening the risk of injury.

𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗼𝗼, 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? 👀

Well, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? 🫣 Whilst I’ve still been busy behind the scenes treating all your lovely horses and dogs over the past almost year since I was last here on your screens, I’ll admit to having totally dropped the ball on keeping up with my social media! Oops! 🤭

But that’s all about to change…

After a bit of help (and a lot of encouragement) from my new social media manager, I’m back! 📣 Well, in fact, I never really went anywhere – I’ve been here all along! But anyone who knows me knows I’m much better at giving treatments than I am at posting online. So, here I am, ready to drag my business into 2024 (just as it’s about to end – timing is everything, right?! 🙃).

For those who don’t already know me – I’m Jenny 🎤 and I’m the one on the right, beside my lovely mare Fleur. As well as being madame’s unpaid full time maid, I’m a 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱, 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗰𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 & 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁, with a heart full of empathy for your animals and a head full of knowledge on how to help them feel better.
