Well, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? 🫣 Whilst I’ve still been busy behind the scenes treating all your lovely horses and dogs over the past almost year since I was last here on your screens, I’ll admit to having totally dropped the ball on keeping up with my social media! Oops! 🤭

But that’s all about to change…

After a bit of help (and a lot of encouragement) from my new social media manager, I’m back! 📣 Well, in fact, I never really went anywhere – I’ve been here all along! But anyone who knows me knows I’m much better at giving treatments than I am at posting online. So, here I am, ready to drag my business into 2024 (just as it’s about to end – timing is everything, right?! 🙃).

For those who don’t already know me – I’m Jenny 🎤 and I’m the one on the right, beside my lovely mare Fleur. As well as being madame’s unpaid full time maid, I’m a 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱, 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗰𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 & 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘀𝘁, with a heart full of empathy for your animals and a head full of knowledge on how to help them feel better. Sadye and I were truly humbled to attend the prestigious Horse & Hound 🐴 Awards 🏆 on Wednesday evening. It was such a special occasion, and we had a wonderful time celebrating the incredible equestrian community.

While I didn’t take home the Vet of the Year 2024 award, I’m genuinely honored to have been nominated. To make it to the 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝟰 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞—less than a year after launching our independent practice—is a huge achievement and one I’m immensely proud of. That’s a win in itself!

Communication is key! 🔑

🧠 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Understanding your horse’s actions 🐴

Horses ❌ don’t ❌ act out of spite or malice - they communicate through their behaviour. What we might perceive as “naughty” or “disobedient” often has an underlying cause, and it’s our job as their caretakers to look deeper and ask 𝙬𝙝𝙮? 🤔

Understanding the “why” behind your horse’s actions is so important, especially as many of these negative behaviours can stem from physical discomfort.

For example:
🚨 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 could indicate back pain, or saddle fit issues
🚨 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 during girthing or grooming might point to gastric ulcers.
🚨 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 could be a horse’s way of telling you that they don’t feel comfortable to move forwards.
🚨 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁 or 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘀 might be due to dental issues.

𝘼𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 with a thorough veterinary check-up before tackling unwanted behaviours as training issues.

Labelling behaviour as “naughty” dismisses the chance to understand what your horse is trying to tell you. Instead of focusing on the what, focus on the why. Listen to their behaviour, work with your vet, trainer, or behaviourist as appropriate, and approach challenges with empathy and curiosity.

Remember, all 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 —your horse is always speaking to you; we just need to listen.

When it comes to equine nutrition, forage is king. 👑 Whether that looks like a net full of hay or a field of fresh pasture 🌱 for your individual horse, a forage-first diet should be the foundation of their nutritional plan.

𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘, 𝒂 𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒚 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒃𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒖𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒕 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒕 2-2.5% 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝒘𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒅𝒂𝒚? For your average 500kg horse, that looks like 10kg-12.5kg of forage daily! (And that’s just to maintain a horse already in good condition, only in moderate work.

Horses evolved to graze for up to 18 hours a day ☀️ 🌙 and they continuously produce stomach acid, whether they’re eating or not. A diet of ample forage is essential to keep their digestive system moving steadily, preventing issues like colic and ulcers. Fibre also promotes a healthy gut by maintaining beneficial bacteria 🦠 in the hindgut.

Forage plays an important role in your horse’s mental well-being too. ❤️ In addition to producing saliva to help buffer stomach acid, chewing for extended periods satisfies a horse’s natural behaviour and helps reduce stress. As a result, those who have constant access to forage are less likely to develop stereotypical behaviours like cribbing or weaving. Where horses receive this forage through periods of turnout ☀️ they also benefit from physical exercise and being able to socialise with others. As herd animals, this is crucial for their well being.

A diet rich in forage not only keeps your horse healthy but also happier in the long run. Prioritising forage means you’re supporting your horse’s natural needs—just as nature intended. 💚

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲? 🏵️

In literal terms, a rosette is an achievement based award 🥇🥈🥉 but it’s so much more than that. It’s woven into the fabric of competition and is deeply valued by competitors at every level.

A rosette holds great value and reminds us why we strive. Everyone remembers 💭 their first rosette, it marks a moment in time with lifelong memories and we believe that a well-made rosette deserves appreciation as the lasting keepsake that it is, often cherished by recipients for years to come.

Multi-medalled Paralympian Sir Lee Pearson told ‘Country Life’ in an interview that he keeps all his championship rosettes in a ‘3ft by 2ft, gold-edged frame’. However, one that means almost as much is a far less flamboyant frilly, collected when he was just 15 years old with a mare called ‘Tacky’. 🐎
