After a one year hiatus due to the pandemic our Lectio Divina podcast is back with a new name--Anglicans on Zoom Reading Scripture (AoZ for short)--and several new hosts. Mission Resurrection Church-Moore County is sponsoring and participating in the podcast. We're starting in the book of Exodus and invite you to join us as we witness God's power to deliver from slavery.

Crying? vs. Laughing? This Christmas

Crying? vs. Laughing? This Christmas

Have you ever laughed at God? What promise, if God made it to you today, would cause you to fall on your face in laughter like Abraham and Sarah from the Bible in Genesis 17-18? God promised this infertile couple a child at age 100 and 90 respectively, and they couldn’t contain their laughter.

How about the promise a baby will save the world? That your pain, shame or guilt will be removed and transformed to joy and peace? That you will be loved and fruitful beyond your wildest dreams? Or that a crucified human from 2000 years ago will return to earth and accomplish what thousands of governments and trillions of dollars have never accomplished over the millennia—peace on earth. Hilarious!

But in the Abraham and Sarah story, God gets the last laugh. After picking himself up from rolling on the floor, “Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!” God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him” (Genesis 17:18-19).

If you look in your Study Bible notes, the name “Isaac” means “laughter.” In other words, God knows Abraham and Sarah are laughing at his promise, so God tells them to call their son “laughter” as a reminder that they doubted the promise of God, but God delightfully made the promise come true anyway.

This Christmas go ahead and have a good belly laugh. God is about to save the world through a homeless baby birthed into the world by a pregnant teenager beside farm animals. And through this baby named Jesus, God is offering today new life, peace and joy during the worst pandemic in 100 years. LoL! LoL! LoL!
