When she was the ceramics studio manager at the experimental village of Arcosanti, Erin O’Loughlin parlayed her manual arts finesse into a campaign to build site-specific furniture.
•
The flight-of-fancy curved walls and oddball configurations of Paolo Soleri’s legacy landmark gained practical seating and storage—and O’Loughlin’s Kickstarter pledges received hand-imprinted, kiln-fired jewelry as thank you gifts.
•
Now an architect in Flagstaff, O’Loughlin sits on the local housing commission, concerned with affordability issues. In her apartment, she tosses her keys onto a table of her own design, plugs in a kiln so tiny that “the only thing it’s good for is jewelry,” and prepares carved crescents and medallions for firing.
•
The Artists’ Gallery co-op, where she’s a member, is a ready retailer of her Scattered Materials brand of necklaces. Hallmarks are leather cords with adjustable knots, “hanging mosaic” elements connected by delicate jump rings, and a consistently affordable price point.
