ACCURATE INFORMATION TO SHARE WITH LOVED ONES.

Sometimes there can be so much misinformation shared with our loved ones, especially our WhatsApp aunties and uncles!

Following our conversation with on cancer awareness in the south Asian community, we have come up with these slides of accurate information to share with loved ones and indeed on WhatsApp.

Let’s get talking about cancer, let’s save lives by talking more about our health with one another, becoming informed and ensuring we are seeing medical professionals in the NHS if we are worried we are experiencing and signs and symptoms that could be linked to cancer.

This weekend the BFI Flare kicks off it’s 38th edition! It’s Europe’s biggest LGBTQIA+ film festival and celebrates the best of q***r cinema around the globe. This year, its content includes South Asian and British Asian talent and filmmakers. 🌈

We have had the special privilege of seeing the premiere of The Lime Green shirt. With Lillete Dubey (Kal Ho Na Ho and Monsoon Wedding) and Kush Khanna (Boogie Man), the 16 minute short film was a great explanation into the world of what it is like for many people who struggle in their childhoods with withholding the secret of their sexuality because of their culture/religion.

The dialogue is strong, from the anger and disgust the mother feels towards her young son wearing this silk lime green shirt to hard hitting truths of why mother and son had become estranged for years. We could see the parallels of our cultures and recognising the struggles of ‘working twice as hard to get to where you are sitting so comfortably’.

Although the film is short, it does have a sweet ending and doesn’t need to be 90 minutes plus for us to understand and feel the journey that both mother and son have faced. Without giving too much away, it does make us proud to know that society is more accepting in our culture and although we still face hardships, conversations are being had and a shared understanding on both ends meet. We also learned and found it incredible that this film is inspired from the filmmaker, Kaushik Ray’s own life.

Catch at this March. A powerful, poignant story by starring , & . Book tickets now! .shaa

A special thanks to

Last night at the opening night at

I love LIFF and the amazing and beautiful talent that creatives put out into the world. Not enough is consumed though. Not enough credit is given to such true talent! The world needs to see this and I’m glad the festival is being put into other parts of the country too.

The festival runs 25th Oct - 4th Nov. If you have any time, and we’ve been attending for years! We’d urge you to go and check out a film. They’re amazing, moving, emotive, beautiful… the list goes on.

TWO CHICKPEAS REVIEW: THE EMPRESS

We saw The Empress last night at the Hammersmith Lyric Theatre and stepped back in time to the reign of Queen Victoria. The play looked at this period of time from two perspectives - that of the aristocrats, following Queen Victoria and her relationship with Abdul Kareem and that of Rani, a different Queen in her own right who comes to England at the young age of 16, seeking new opportunities in a new world.

Watching the play we thought it was interesting to look at the different perspectives of Queen Victoria and Rani as they try and immerse themselves into worlds unknown to them. Rani is misled by a family she was working for as an Iyer (Nanny) and struggles with living in a world colonised by the British, leaving people from India powerless over their lives and circumstances. Queen Victoria falls in love with South Asian Culture but receives backlash from everyone around her despite being Queen and Empress.

It was an interesting watch, our podcast aims to explore our experiences of being British Asian and this play was a nice insight to look at where we have come from, where we are and where we could possibly go.

The performance from the cast was nothing short of perfection and draws a range of emotion from the audience. The set is cleverly designed to display both worlds simultaneously and the contrast between both is clear and impactful.

Grab tickets while you can as this show is only running until Saturday 28th October! Let us know what you think if you go ☺️

LITTLE ENGLISH 🇬🇧❤️🧡🤍💙💚💜🇮🇳

It was truly an honour to be invited to this event and witness the British Asian masterpiece that is and it is one of the most exciting films to have come out in decades! This a film that truly takes you on an emotional rollercoaster and has everything from comedy, to drama and all round warm and sweet notes too. Blending of British and Asian cultures is something we are always trying to learn more about and gain a broader understanding of on the podcast and this film does it in so many ways!

The acting in this film is honestly out of this world! We had no idea is from the U.K. as she plays her role of Simmy FLAWLESSLY!! This is truly a masterpiece of a film by and we could talk about this film endlessly! Luckily we have joining us on the podcast soon to do just that so keep your eyes peeled for this episode!

More than anything, we just want to encourage as many people as possible to see this film, not only for your entertainment but to support and champion British Asian talent in film. We are still paving our way to be seen, heard and celebrated across mainstream film and by going to see this film you are making room and giving a seat at the table for future British Asian film makers and artists!

This film will be available in cinemas, particularly Cineworld cinemas from 17th March!

Incredible meeting .chadha last night at the for the press night of Sudha Buchar’s Evening Conversations (episode with Sudha out very very soon!)

Meeting Gurinder was amazing as films like Bend It Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice were films that really made us feel seen and represented. In a time where representation is being called for more and more across all media and film it was amazing to meet one of the pioneers who paved the way and inspired so many after. For us it was the first time we saw l Indian people on the big screen who really reflected the world, London and Britain we really encompassed and experienced. Anytime anyone asks us “Where’s Hounslow then; what’s it like? ” I say “have you seen Bend it like Beckham? There!”

We had the privilege of speaking with the inspiring, talented and eloquent Asma Khan. We spoke with Asma about her new cookbook, Ammu, which is available from all major retailers now. We explore cultural representation, the role and place of women today and food as a love language.
We can't explain enough how inspiring Asma is and how much more we could talk with her, but you can get your dose of her here with the Two Chickpeas and by purchasing Ammu 🙂

Asma Khan is the chef and owner of Darjeeling Express. She moved to Cambridge from Calcutta in 1991. Now residing in London with her husband and two boys, she comes from a royal background – Rajput on her father’s side and Bengali on her mother’s. After studying law, Asma went on to do a PhD in British Constitutional Law at King's College London.
Cooking was always her passion and she began her food career in 2012 as a supper club in her home. In 2015, she opened a pop-up in a Soho pub to much acclaim, and Darjeeling Express the restaurant opened its doors in June 2017. A year later, her debut cook book “Asma’s Indian Kitchen” was published by Pavilion on 4th October 2018. The book was the winner in the U.K. category for food publishing in Indian cuisine in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.
Asma is the first British chef to feature in Netflix's Emmy nominated Chef's Table. Her episode also received a 2020 James Beard Award nomination.
Business Insider named her number 1 on their list of "100 Coolest People in Food and Drink". The Evening Standard listed her in The Progress 1000 as one of London’s most influential people 2019. She has been included in the eighth edition of the GG2 Power List –profiling Britain’s 101 most influential Asians and she is now the first chef to be featured on Vogue's list of 25 most influential women of year for 2020. Episode 14: Aunties of the Future

The Two Chickpeas are joined by special guests and sisters, Nikita & Leah Chander and their cousin Aman. The episode stems from a previous conversation which got us thinking about the toxic aunties causing havoc and endless gossip across Asian communities and how we would like aunties of the future (us!) to talk moving forward in life. Aman shares her experiences of being in a bi-racial relationship and the rejection she has faced from her family and society. Listen to this unique episode of aunties in the making and how we hope to switch the conversation.

The revolution for Black Lives Matter spread across the world when the world saw that horrific footage of George Floyd being killed by an American police officer. If we are truly to eradicate racism then everyone has to be in this together. This special episode of Two Chickpeas in a Podcast explores what the South Asian community can do to eradicate racism towards black people, how Gandhi himself was a racist, and how the peaceful protests that took place in London and across the globe have been portrayed negatively in the media.

The Two Chickpeas felt this is a time for everyone voices to be heard and this episode does just that as a number of guests have contributed their thoughts to this episode or got in touch via zoom to carry on the many necessary conversations that need to be had surrounding the Black Lives Matter Movement.

This is a movement; not a moment.

Guests who have contributed towards the episode are:

Black Lives Matter ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Please use this time to speak with friends and family about the issue at large and how we can bring about CHANGE! We have been speaking with friends and anyone who can add further knowledge and insight on the Black Lives Matter movement about this non-stop.

We are disgusted by the actions of the government, the lack of news coverage on News Channels across the globe and the way that peaceful protestors are being portrayed to the world. It is truly down to us as a generation to bring about change for GOOD! We cannot allow our children and generations after us to be exposed and live in a world where you could leave the house and not return at the end of the day because of the colour of your skin...!

It’s down to us. Voting matters. Voting helps bring your voice to light. George Flyod’s brother asked for the same thing. Please use our voices and vote so we can bring about change. Other things aside from voting need to happen so let’s get talking and come up with a plan to present to government and government officials to bring the change we want to see in the world.
