It is that time of year again when half of Oamaru drains out to " Up the lakes", and who couldn't blame them! The scenery is absolutely stunning, with hydro lakes and dams.
Otematata is a central hub close to Lake Benmore and Lake Aviemore, both of which have their own climates, often 5 -10 degrees above coastal temperatures.
If you're heading away camping this week, Meridian has issued spill warnings, so keep an eye on the lake levels.

New council subdivision?

It's not likely, but if you've been to Harbourside Park recently, you may have noticed the shanty town that's popping up. Rest assured, it's not a council venture for seaside apartments but part of the set configuration for the upcoming Netflix filming of 'East of Eden'.
The pre-made sets arrived this week and are being set up to 'test on location'. They will then be dismantled again until the full filming crew is set up in January.

SURFING FOR FARMERS

This is a nationwide, fast-growing, quick getaway for farming communities, offering a break from the stresses and grind of the farm.
There are now 28 NZ locations and 590 instructors who have helped 8,200 farmers unwind and have fun night surfing.

Locally we are lucky to have one held at Kakanui (Campbells Bay), and tonight was their second outing, there's one more before Christmas and again in the new year (Keep an eye on their page) https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100095277768671

After some lessons and safety instruction, it was out into the surf for some fun then back for a BBQ and a yarn in the long summer night.

Last night Police, FENZ & St Johns held a joint training exercise at Mitre 10. "Armed" Police entered the building removing "victims" who were then retrieved by FENZ staff and relocated to a triage area where they were treated by St John. The "Bad Man" was located and arrested - (looking a little worse for wear.)
The scenario was run twice.
It was great to see our emergency services putting their skills together and after a tragedy in a Dunedin supermarket years ago showed us, you can never be over-prepared.

7th December, a few more added tonight, photos are indicative only as it's only a snapshot - Nothing compares to real life - watching the sequences and light changes.

A few Christmas light competition houses have popped up this week. I haven't seen a list yet, so I only visited the ones I've seen.

This afternoon, at 4 p.m., the Gardens water play park officially opened. Within minutes, it was all go, with water going in all directions and kids having a great time!

This will definitely be a must-go area during the hot summer months and one of the best investments the council has made in the Gardens.

The Council put on a great street party tonight to officially light up the Christmas tree. The crowd danced to the ' Fondue Party ' band, which knocked out hit after hit. Face painting, sausage sizzle, and plenty of activities!
At 9:15, the countdown was on, and the tree lit up to cheers from the crowd.
A local contractor was busy putting up the Christmas lights on light poles along the highway, so it's pretty official: The countdown to Christmas is on.

I absolutely love the quiet seaside town of Moeraki. To the north of the township are the famous Moeraki Boulders, the best access is along the beach from the bottom carpark at low tide. A 'new' boulder has been birthed from the cliff and stands at around 6 feet.

Then from the Moeraki township, you can head out along Lighthouse Rd to Katiki Point, famous for its Maritime lighthouse, and wildlife sanctuary, where you can see Seals, gulls, and Yellow-eyed penguins. The track down to the islands has had a major upgrade since I last visited, remember at this time of the year the gates close at 5:30. The tide-dependent island at the end is closed, but there is still good fishing on the rocks on the southside.

The landscape has changed in the Northend with the completion of the optometrist's new building on the corner of Caledonian Rd & Thames Hwy.
Before the original building was demolished, it was home to a host of fish-n-chip shops: Yogis Takeaways, Mingos Takeaways, Vonders Takeaways, and Northend Fish Supply.
A wee snippet of signwriting is still visible from the original butchery next door.

Are you into rocks?

We are not taking baby rocks here, but ginormous limestone rocks the size of a two-storied house - set in some of the most quiet and tranquil areas in the Waitaki.

To reach these amazing limestone formations, you need to head inland around 40 km to an accent world where 30 million years ago, the area was under 100m of warm seawater.
The limestone structures are where sediments accumulated on the seafloor, and were thrust up over millions of years of geological activity. Weather and storms have naturally eroded away sediment to leave the giant rocks exposed.

Tonight, the Tongan Rugby League defeated the New Zealand Kiwis 24-25 for the second time in history. This brought the Oamaru Tongan community out to celebrate in style on Thames Street.
There was a sea of red/white flags, tooting vehicles, and partying supporters. It was great to see them celebrating the win!
