To conclude our trailblazer series this month we take a look at some of Shingoose’s amazing achievements✨ In the 1990s, he played a key role in establishing the Juno category for Indigenous music, paving the way for future generations. His powerful song “Treaty Rights” became the anthem for the 2007 Aboriginal Day of Action, and in 2012, he was honoured with an induction into the Manitoba Music Hall of Fame. Shingoose’s impact continues with his contribution to the album “Native North American Volume 1,” featuring his song “Silver River,” which was nominated for Best Historical Album at the 2016 Grammys. Shingoose helped shape the landscape of Indigenous music and dedicated his time to promoting Indigenous voices, making him a true trailblazer in the industry. We honour and celebrate 2-Spirit folks this month and every month. Since before colonization, many Indigenous peoples embrace multiple genders and gender expressions. In many of our Nations, gendered pronouns don’t exist. Instead our languages focus on relationships, rather than gender, when speaking about, or to someone.
The term “Two-Spirit” was adopted in the early 1990s, originating from the Annishinaabemowin phrase “niizh manidoowag,” meaning “two spirits.” While the term “Two-Spirit” may be recent, the identities the term encompasses have existed since time immemorial. From within these teachings, Two-Spirit people are considered sacred and hold deeply significant roles and multiple perspectives within community.
It’s important to note that not all Indigenous people who identify as Two-Spirit also identify as LGBTQIA+, and vice versa. For some, choosing the term Two-Spirit represents a reconnection with Indigenous perspectives on gender and sexual identity, beyond Eurocentric binaries.
We acknowledge and celebrate the fact that Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ individuals have always existed as sacred and beautiful members of our community.

🌟 Introducing "Miikawaadizi" 🌟
A series where our artists shine a spotlight on Queer Indigenous talent they admire and want to celebrate. In Anishinaabemowin, "Miikawaadizi'' is a genderless term meaning "s/he is handsome, is beautiful; s/he is smart, clever, knows what s/he is doing."
Our first artist, Amanda Rheaume, has selected the incredibly talented Mohawk Two-Spirit artist and songwriter, Shawnee Kish. Shawnee's artistry is truly remarkable, and her music resonates deeply with audiences.
Amanda has chosen to uplift Shawnee's powerful track, "Burnin Love" featuring Jamie Fine.
