[Puspakom Monopoly Ends; Qualified Parties To Provide Vehicle Inspection]

Following the end of Puspakom's concession on August 31, 2024, the cabinet has decided to open up vehicle inspection services to all qualified parties, announced Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew F**k.

Effective September 1, 2024, Puspakom will no longer hold a monopoly on these services. Prospective providers must meet set conditions similar to Puspakom's obligations, including employing qualified personnel and adhering to inspection standards.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will monitor compliance, with penalties for violations. Registration for interested parties will begin in early 2024.

The Ministry of Works has taken proactive steps to reduce congestion on highways ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Measures include pausing non-essential maintenance, activating Smart Lanes, and introducing the MyPLUS-TTA app.

Toll transaction lanes will increase, and toll collection will be streamlined. Road upgrades, including new signboards and additional lanes, are underway. [F1 Is Too Expensive Compared To MotoGP]

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kementerian Belia dan Sukan/KBS) has disclosed that hosting Formula One (F1) races costs four times more than organizing MotoGP events.

Minister Hannah Yeoh stated that MotoGP costs RM53.2 million, while F1 demands RM228 million and Formula E approximately RM120 million. Yeoh emphasized the importance of considering affordability and public interest.

She highlighted MotoGP's significant turnout of 182,000 attendees as a reason for its preference. Yeoh also noted instances where parties attempted to organize F1 events without proper government authorization.

[MOTUL 12Hours Of Sepang]

The highly anticipated Motul Sepang 12 Hours endurance race made its thrilling return last weekend at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit (SIC) for its 2024 edition. Practice sessions commenced on Thursday, followed by further sessions on Friday, culminating in the main race flagged off on Saturday at 10AM.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed that revenue from vehicle number plate sales last year hit RM 311.8 million, with RM 21 million from special registration numbers (NPI).

[Government Could Save RM29bil If RON95 And Diesel Being Free Float]

Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) research suggests that freeing the float of RON95 and diesel could save the government RM29 billion in fuel subsidies. However, this would likely result in a 64% increase in RON95 prices and a 61% increase in diesel prices. HLIB emphasizes the urgency of subsidy reforms to align with fiscal deficit targets, proposing a strategy that involves transitioning fuel prices to market rates while providing cash aid to identified target groups.

Implementing this strategy could potentially reduce the fiscal deficit from 4.3% of GDP to 2.8%. Subsidies and social assistance in Malaysia have nearly tripled from RM23 billion in 2010 to an estimated RM64 billion in 2023, with a significant portion allocated to petroleum products. HLIB suggests redirecting subsidy funds towards initiatives aimed at boosting individual development and empowerment for longer-term benefits.

Maintaining subsidies disproportionately benefits higher-income groups over lower-income groups, exacerbating issues such as smuggling and subsidy fund leakage. Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli plans to introduce targeted subsidies for RON95 in the latter half of 2024, utilizing mechanisms based on individual and household income levels.

[February Global EV Sales Slow Down By Chinese New Year]

Global sales of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) saw a modest 3% increase in February compared to the same period last year, reaching 800,000 units. While Europe experienced a 12% growth and the US and Canada saw a 31% rise, sales in China declined by 12%.

Charles Lester, data manager at Rho Motion, attributed the slower growth to China, the dominant market for electric cars. He noted that despite recent cooling in demand, sales in China have still increased by 34% year-to-date.

Looking ahead, Rho Motion expects global electric car sales to grow between 25% and 30% for the year.

Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) has released a statement addressing an incident concerning a discrepancy found in a Malaysian digital license (e-LMM), where the license holder's photo did not match the one displayed on their digital license. The department has acknowledged the issue and issued an apology.

According to the statement, the problem arose during scheduled system maintenance for the MyJPJ system conducted by the department's information technology team. Immediate corrective measures were implemented upon discovery.

The department emphasized that there was no indication of system abuse or identity theft. It reassured the public that all information remains secure and protected while they continuously enhance the system to serve the public better.

[GT-R R35 Near It's End ? Last Batch Production Rumored For 2025]

Unveiled alongside the first iPhone back in 2008, the R35 Nissan GT-R is still in production 17 years later. Despite its enduring performance, the aging twin-turbo V6 engine is considered outdated in the era of electrification. The 2023 facelift was limited to Japan and the United States.

Rumors suggest the R35's final days are near, with plans for 1,500 units in 2025 reported as the last batch. Despite its age, the R35 still attracts buyers, and the 2024 model is sold out in Japan. Priced from JPY 13.75 million (~RM 436k), the GT-R offers three different variants: Premium Edition, Premium Edition T-Spec, and Nismo variants, with 300 Nismo units in the rumored final edition.

As the R35's production potentially concludes next year, speculation arises about the GT-R's fate. [Traffic Jam in Klang Valley Caused Motorist RM 6.5 billion on Fuel]

Motorists in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor spend approximately RM6.8 billion annually on petrol while stuck in daily traffic jams, with 2.2 million drivers facing gridlock during morning rush hours. A study by Kuala Lumpur City Hall found that commuters spend 580 hours a year in traffic, with vehicles stuck in jams consuming 2.6 liters of oil per hour.

Professor Law Teik Hua from Universiti Putra Malaysia warns that the reliance on private vehicles (90% of road users) contributes to economic losses and environmental issues. He emphasizes the need for a shift towards public transportation for a sustainable solution.

Despite subsidized petrol at RM2.05 per liter for RON95, increased vehicle sales, and highway expansions, Law cautions against viewing highways as a long-term remedy for congestion. He suggests a behavioral shift towards public transportation to alleviate urban traffic issues.

[Proton Continues On Positive Growth On 2024]

PROTON, the national car manufacturer, sustained positive growth with 13,602 total sales in February, contributing to a two-month total of 26,484 units—a 3% increase from the previous year. Despite the typical year-beginning slowdown, the automotive industry saw a 13.8% year-to-date growth, reaching 129,353 units.

The Proton Saga, entering its 39th year, continued its success, selling 6,212 units in February and surpassing 12,341 units in the first two months of 2024—a 10.9% YoY increase.

Notably, export sales surged by 223% in February to 346 units and achieved a 50.5% year-to-date growth with 453 units sold overseas. PROTON is expected to maintain a 20.5% market share, securing its second position in the national automotive sales ranking.

[JPJ To Introduce e-Testing Starting April 2024]

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will launch an electronic driving test and training system (e-Testing) in April, allowing candidates to be evaluated without JPJ officers in the vehicle. The system utilizes detectors and cameras for real-time performance assessments, enhancing the evaluation process. Candidates can choose between traditional tests and e-Testing until full implementation in 2030.

E-Testing participants enjoy benefits like a free second attempt on the same day, selective retakes, priority in reservations, and a RM10 rebate for the learner's license. The initiative aims to improve testing efficiency, integrity, and electronic monitoring. Three driving institutes are ready to adopt e-Testing, and a six-year transition period is provided for other institutes.

Additionally, driving institutes can open test centers for computerized legal tests, simplifying the process for candidates. Applications for KPP Test Centers will be accepted from April 2024, with approved institutes required to implement e-Testing within a year.
